Madeleine McCann case set to result in imminent arrests
Brendan de Beer, Tracy McVeigh | 9th Jun 2014 6:00 AM

PORTUGESE police sources have confirmed to the Observer that a number of suspects identified by Scotland Yard detectives will be arrested "in the very near future" over the disappearance seven years ago of Madeleine McCann.

Police confirmed that "several people" had been identified by the London Metropolitan police (Met), who have had officers and two sniffer dogs in the Algarve all last week searching a large area of scrubland close to the holiday apartment where the McCann family were staying when the 3-year-old disappeared in May 2007.

The search of that particular area, a Portuguese police source said, would end today and the search would shift to another area.

It has been six months since the initial request by the Met for access to "three prime suspects" for questioning, although it is believed that as many as eight could be on the interview list.

They would be the first significant arrests in the case.

The three are thought to be burglars who may have carried out raids in the holiday resort and live locally, although the Portuguese police would not say whether the men had criminal records.

The development comes after a cold-case review by British officers and involved the painstaking examination of hundreds of phone records from the area on the night the toddler vanished from her bed as her parents ate supper with friends at a nearby restaurant.

On Saturday, officers in Met uniform were seen studying a flat area of ground at the opposite end of the area. They had previously focused on a hole covered in undergrowth.

Forensics officers sifted soil through large sieves inside a white tent set up to cover the void but nothing of interest was found.

Madeleine McCann: Police begin to search second site
BBC, 11 June 2014 Last updated at 09:57

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have begun searching a new site near Praia da Luz.

Portuguese officers have taped off the area - which is around 15 minutes' walk from the Algarve holiday resort - and UK officers with two police sniffer dogs have started searching the site.

The new search area is an overgrown grassy patch of land situated off the main road out of Praia da Luz.

Madeleine was three when she went missing in the resort in May 2007.

The two dogs, from South Wales Police, have been seen with their handlers inside the cordon, where officers are concentrating on a smaller area marked out with police tape.

Yellow and white police tape had earlier been stretched around the new area, which is guarded by armed local police.

The larger cordoned-off area includes a plot of land with vegetables growing in the middle and a number of dilapidated outbuildings around it.

Officers from Scotland Yard are expected to spend today and possibly Thursday and Friday searching the new site.

Madeleine McCann: Police complete search of second site
BBC, 11 June 2014 Last updated at 11:48

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have completed a search of a second site near the Algarve holiday resort of Praia da Luz.

Portuguese officers earlier taped off the grassy area - which is around 15 minutes' walk from Praia da Luz - and UK officers and two police sniffer dogs then searched the site.

Officers are expected to now move to a third search site in the area.

Madeleine was three when she went missing in Praia da Luz in May 2007

Madeleine McCann: Scotland Yard Confirms 'No New Evidence' Found in Search of Wasteland
By Priya Joshi
June 11, 2014 21:21 BST

Scotland Yard has confirmed that no evidence relating to Madeleine McCann has been identified after an extensive eight-day search in Portugal.

Portuguese and British police joined forces to carry out three searches of wasteland, close to where Madeleine went missing during a family holiday in Praia da Luz seven years ago.

Scotland Yard has described the searches as the "first phase of this major investigation" and confirmed that "more activity has been agreed" and is expected to commence shortly.

The deployment has been described as the "largest ever undertaken by UK police overseas in a case of this type".

Approximately 60,000 square metres of land had been covered, using sniffer dogs and advanced radar technology, which was designed to look for signs of disturbed earth.

Searches were also carried out in a sewer network close to the Ocean village resort. Scotland Yard said overall "41 ground anomalies" had been identified by both aerial surveys and ground analysis, which were then fully investigated.

The decision to search wasteland areas around the resort was as a result of investigation work by UK police.

I would like to know what has made this case different from the hundreds of missing children over the years. Why are Scotland Yard putting so much time and effort into this one case alone, alas we will never know the answer.

I feel sorry for the parents of missing children, where no known spouse has been suspected in abducting a child, but rather the child has simply gone missing, perhaps having been abducted by a stranger, never to be seen again.

Ben Needham went missing almost 20 years ago, his mother was interviewed many times, in the hope that her little boy could be found, if he's still alive he will be in his early 20s now. Where was the effort to find him a year, five or seven years after he went missing?

I have very strong feelings about the Madeline McCann case, and I hope that little girl who was badly let down by her parents will be found alive and safe. I have sympathy for her, but none whatsoever for those parents.

Hi Wroughead.... I agree some cases just become popular in the media and in the attention of police....yet many similar cases just get regular attention (or less).

I will say that there has to be some sort of twist or mystery to hold my attention.. but that should not be true of the police etc.

Yes, Karmady.
I only started a Madeleine McCann thread because this new search seemed to be based on something.
A search of waste ground, even at the time of a disappearance/murder more often than not finds nothing, and of course after 7 years one would not expect such a search to not have a good chance of finding anything. In fact I assume it would not have been undertaked without some reason/evidence/testimony... I wonder what the UK cops info is?

Ground Search for Madeleine McCann's Remains Ended - New Phase to Start Soon
Thursday, 12 June 2014

Eight-day search near apartments where Madeleine McCann vanished in 2007 is called off as locals turn on British police with graffiti calling officers 'stupid'.

Police yesterday abandoned their search of scrubland in the Portuguese holiday resort where Madeleine McCann disappeared seven years ago.

The British team of specialists did not find any clues to her disappearance during the eight-day operation.
But they said the multi-million-pound inquiry will soon move into a new phase after negotiations with the Portuguese authorities.

I agree... it was negligent to leave children... but if that was the parents only "crime" then it is probably one that MANY are guilty of.

I can see how parents might do that... but of course now in hindsight it was a seriously wrong thing to do.

I am reluctant to even speculate on what happened... I see a lot of "lynch mob" comments about the parents involvement.

I don't know of anyone personally, who would leave their child/ren alone in a foreign Country and thank goodness for that! While I agree there are MANY parents who're guilty of it, I can't understand why they take such a risk! Anything could go wrong, anything and it makes me really angry to think there are so many irresponsible parents walking among us! I can honestly say that I have never, nor will I ever, leave children by themselves in my own Country, let alone a foreign one! When the Sky City Casino in Auckland first opened I, along with a friend and my 11 year old son stayed at the Hotel. Both my friend and I wanted to hit the Casino (who wouldn't ha), so we took turns going downstairs just so my son wouldn't be left alone! It never even crossed my mind to leave him alone! Yes, the McCanns have paid the ultimate price for their mistake. It was avoidable though, it's a choice they made and one they will have to live with! Don't get me wrong, I have no idea how involved they are in their daughters disappearance apart from the fact, that they left her and her two siblings alone while they went out dining. :( I need to read up on this case as I wasn't aware there are some with a "lynch mob" mentality regarding the parents involvement! :eek Thanks for all the articles you're posting, Rumpole, much appreciated!

I don't mind posting the updates. I did though start the thread because I thought this search indicated some sort of progress in the case... it seems not. :(

No argument from me that a parent would be WRONG to leave a child in their own country.. let alone abroad. It is a crime in itself for the parents to have done that... but I think other people would have done similar and "got away with it"

(Assuming the parents did not kill Madeleine) even such a BAD ACT did not "deserve" the outcome of an abducted or murdered child. IYKWIM.

There is a vocal crowd convinced that "the parents did it".... but I fear the case will not be resolved unless there is a body and remains are found. Even then.... it will be hard to prove what happened.

Yes, I know what you mean! Of course the McCann's didn't deserve to have their child abducted or murdered--it'd be a horrifying experience what they've been through and are still going through to this day! They made a bad decision that night and I doubt they will ever forgive themselves! :( It's disturbing too, to think there are still people out there who would risk leaving their child/ren alone. :( All to often people think it won't happen to them and this is what I don't understand. What makes them think it won't happen to them? Frickin clueless..BEEP BEEEPP BEEEEPPPPPP! :wall

Suspects to be questioned in Madeleine McCann investigation
Published: 8:28AM Tuesday July 01, 2014 Source: ONE News

Suspects in the disappearance of Madeline McCann are set to be interviewed in Portugal this week.

Media outlets in the UK are reporting that Scotland Yard officials have returned to Portugal to question four suspects, as well as witnesses, as part of the second phase of the Scotland Yard probe on the ground in The Algarve.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said: "They will be joining their Portuguese colleagues and sitting in on a series of interviews with, I'm told, first a key witness, and then a number of people who are being described as aguidos (suspects).

Madeleine McCann inquiry: Two suspects questioned
BBC, 1 July 2014

Two suspects have been questioned in Portugal in the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The BBC understands one of them is Sergey Malinka, who was questioned as a witness in 2007 after the three-year-old went missing.

A total of four "persons of interest" - or arguidos - will be quizzed in the latest development in the case.

Interviews are being carried out by Portuguese officers with Scotland Yard detectives present.

Mr Malinka and the other suspect left the central police station in Faro after they were interviewed.

The Russian-born computer expert, who has Portuguese nationality, is likely to face more questioning on Wednesday.

Portuguese citizens

A third person, who is said to be suffering from severe schizophrenia, remained in the police headquarters after the other two had left. It is not clear when the fourth individual will be interviewed.

All of those being questioned are Portuguese citizens. They have all been summoned to be interviewed; there have been no arrests.

Madeleine McCann search turns to Australia after discovery of unidentified remains

By Cristina Corbin Published July 28, 2015

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/07/28 ... cmp=hplnws

British investigators probing the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann from a resort in Portugal have contacted Australian police about remains of a young girl found in a suitcase near a highway, London's Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to FoxNews.com Tuesday.

"We are aware of the discovery of the body and we have made contact with authorities in South Australia," a spokeswoman for Scotland Yard said Tuesday morning. Australian police, meanwhile, said a connection is "unlikely," although the girls' ages match and the dead girl's time of death lines up with McCann's disappearance.

The remains -- found with a distinctive homemade quilt -- were described by the South Australian Police Department as those of a "fair-haired" child, likely a Caucasian female and between 2 ½ and 4 years old. Based on an examination of the bones, Australian police determined the child was killed "some time since the start of 2007."

I am realistic in believing it most likely isn't her however there is a part of me that hopes it is her remains so there will be some closure and also since it would mean that it isn't another child who has died. :rose

For a really sad point from the article there is this excerpt:

"At this time our inquiries will focus on where the evidence leads us in this investigation, and at this point that primary focus remains within Australia," Bray said, noting that 32 Australian children have so far been ruled out in the probe.
-=-=-=-=-=-=

I hope those aren't all missing children but I would suspect they are. Depressing.

Madeleine McCann ruled out as victim found in Australia
Missing U.K. tot ‘totally excluded’ as match to decomposed bones found in bushes outside Adelaide

By: The Associated Press, Published on Thu Jul 30 2015

http://www.thestar.com/news/world/2015/ ... ralia.html

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA—The decomposed remains of a young girl found in a suitcase dumped in Australia do not belong to missing British girl Madeleine McCann, police say.

The bones were found earlier this month in bushes near the South Australia state capital Adelaide.

South Australia police detective superintendent Des Bray said late Wednesday that 43 children had now been eliminated as the victim in the murder investigation, including McCann.

“I can confirm that Madeleine McCann has been totally excluded as a potential victim and U.K. police have been advised,” he said.

Saw a tweet that John Podesta has not email activity during a 6 month time period when Madeleine McCann went missing. I want to verify this and will update.
------------------------------------------------------

Even though the two photos of the suspect, released by British detectives in 2013 is of ONE suspect, descriptions were given to the Portuguese inquiry by TWO witnesses after Madeleine disappeared.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/201 ... nn-suspect

This is just too weird not to post. John Podesta and his brother's resemblance is eerie.
