Stumps - Day 1 ( 4th Test)

South Africa 329/5 (90.0 ov)

Good to see what looks like a normal 1st day of a Test match. 90 overs bowled, 300+ runs, but also a few wickets fell.

Stumps Day 4 (4th Test)

South Africa 475 & 248/5d
England 342 & 52/3 (21.0 ov)
England require another 330 runs with 7 wickets remaining

Looks like SA declared, to give themselves most of a session to bowl at England, giving England a target of 382 to chase. SA managed to take 3 quick wickets in the final session of the day.. and have an etire 5th day in which to bowl England out.

Day 5 starts at 2:30AM my time, correct Rumpole?

ESPN says "See you bright and early for an 8am GMT resumption." which is 2:00AM (10 SA time).

Would rather watch the T20 but may keep a tab open for this one.

9.40am: Hello and welcome. Who's up for some heroic/heartbreaking fifth-day action? Let's flip for it... South Africa haven't tasted the sweet nectar of Test victory since January 2015, this nine-match winless run their longest since the 1960s. Could England be so cruel as to deny them?

Wow... looks like England are "pants" as they would say in UK :)

Quoting ESPN
England have lost six wickets in just over an hour... There might have been a Rourke's Drift spirit in the dressing room at the start of the day but this has become a run-of-the-mill massacre

I OBJECT to the allusion to Rorke's drift!!! :stamp

This aint WALES its the friggin crap Poms :roll

Friggin RAIN has stopped play... as if the run chase wasn't hard enough... it may well be made harder? with a DL adjustment :wall

And this was for once a GREAT high scoring game... games always less than satisfying when a DL involved :(

Quote:
8.22pm Uh oh ... seems as though those D/L updates were handy after all. The rain has arrived, and we are off the field for now ...

Talking of D/L, the par score at the end of 34 overs would be 290 ... England are more comfortably placed than de Kock's magnificence would imply ...

England win if there is no further play

Before the rain....
South Africa RR 7.46
Last 5 ovs 41/1 RR 8.20
Required RR 9.09
England RR 7.98

So the required RR was up over 9 (5 wickets in hand)... not impossible

8.44pm The light rain has intensified, unfortunately. It is looking minging out there, but as Shaun Pollock says, think of the poor farmers! The drought is ending, just as South Africa's hopes in this game are ending...

Presumably the SA batsmen KNEW that rain was imminent (likely) and they KNEW the DL required runs at every stage ( I can recall batsmen being shown lists of target scores.. brought out with drink or change of gloves etc.

So... SA batsmen have known the target.. and they did bat aggressively.. so again presumably 25 was the best they could manage... they simply couldn't make the 290 after 33 overs.
