Accused in van attack a former 'below-average' CAF recruit, but no red flag: source
The Canadian Press

RICHMOND HILL, Ont. — The man accused in a van attack that left 10 people dead in Toronto had spent two months with the Canadian Armed Forces last year, and was considered a below-average recruit who wasn't adjusting well to military life, a defence source said Tuesday.

Alek Minassian was a member of the forces from Aug. 23, 2017, until Oct. 25, 2017, a spokeswoman with the Department of National Defence said.

Alek Minassian — FULL police interrogation of incel van attack driver
Sep 28, 2019
The Mob Reporter

Quote:
BREAKING NEWS: Hours after Alek Minassian was arrested as the driver in the deadly 2018 Toronto van attack, a careful and skillful Toronto police detective interrogated him for close to four hours. Minassian couldn’t keep much to himself. This is the full interrogation video, as released to me by order of Justice Anne Molloy of Ontario Superior Court in response to a request National Post made, joined by other news organizations. For the sake of viewing ease, lengthy scenes when no one is in the interview room and no one is speaking have been deleted. The deletions are marked by a “static” screen effect.

Van attack suspect Alek Minassian to be tried by judge alone in Toronto
By Jessica Patton Global News
Posted June 19, 2019 11:13 am

The man accused of a deadly van attack on a busy sidewalk in the north end of the city won’t face a jury and will be tried in Toronto, a court ruled on Wednesday.

“As a result of the consent of all parties to proceed without a jury, there’s no need to move the case from Toronto, and the case can proceed here, and it will proceed in Toronto in February of 2020,” said Minassian’s lawyer, Boris Bytensky.

“The trial is going to proceed without a jury and with a judge. We have a very senior, experienced judge, and I’m sure that Mr. Minassian will receive the fairest trial possible.”

Toronto van attack trial postponed again, Alek Minassian's lawyer confirms
Codi Wilson
Published Thursday, March 26, 2020

TORONTO -- The trial for the man who killed 10 people and injured more than a dozen others when he plowed down pedestrians on a busy stretch of sidewalk in North York in 2018 has been postponed once again.

The lawyer for Alek Minassian, who faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder in connection with the April 2018 attack, confirmed on social media that his client’s trial will not be proceeding as scheduled on April 6.

The confirmation comes after the Ontario Superior Court of Justice suspended all operations earlier this month, including upcoming jury trials, in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Boris Bytensky, Minassian’s lawyer, said in his closing arguments Thursday that his client’s autism spectrum disorder left him incapable of making a rational choice at the time. Bytensky said the disorder left Minassian without the ability to develop empathy and ultimately he was unable to know what he did was morally wrong.

Prosecutor Joe Callaghan said in closing arguments that Alek Minassian’s autism spectrum disorder — or ASD — didn’t push him to carry out the attack on April 23, 2018.

Rather, Minassian knew what he was doing was wrong, the prosecutor said.

Minassian verdict could take months
Saturday, December 19th 2020

After roughly five weeks of testimony, Alek Minassian's trial has come to an end.

Justice Anne Molloy has not given a firm date on when she will deliver her verdict but says it will likely be sometime in March.

She explains she has two other cases to decide before she gets back to deciding this case and that the pandemic has caused a backlog.

Minassian has pleaded not criminally responsible to 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder.

He has admitted to planning and carrying out the 2018 Yonge Street van attack so Justice Molloy must focus on his state-of-mind and whether he was capable of rational thought.

BREAKING: Toronto van attacker found GUILTY of all 26 counts
Mar 4, 2021 4:34 AM EST

The culprit has already admitted to renting a van and driving it on the sidewalk in North York in April of 2018.

The man who committed the Toronto van attack that saw 10 people dead and 16 injured was found guilty of all 26 counts. A timetable for sentencing will come on March 18.

Justice Anne Molloy, who asked of journalists to not publish the perpetrator's name, delivered the verdict on Wednesday.

Molloy said that much hinged on whether the perpetrator knew the crime was morally wrong rather than legally wrong. This would mean he lacked rational perception and thus rational choice, being unable to rationally evaluate what he was doing.

Molloy said that it was clear to her that he knew the actions would be seen "by the vast majority of society as morally wrong."

Molloy said that she found the defence had failed to prove that the perpetrator did not know that his crimes were morally wrong.

"He knew it was legally wrong to kill people, he also knew that his plan to run down and kill people constituted first degree murder... That's why Mr. Doe attempted death by cop," said Molloy.

The culprit had already admitted to renting a van and driving it on the sidewalk in North York in April of 2018, intentionally striking civilians and killing mostly women. The shocking incident was categorized by many as an "incel" terror attack.
