Trapped in a Thai cave: The rescue process could take months

A top Thai official said on Tuesday that heavy rains forecast for the coming days could worsen floods in the cave where 12 boys and their football coach were located after an exhaustive search, and could force authorities to speed up their extraction by having them dive their way out.

The 13 were located by rescue divers late on Monday night (Tuesday NZ Time) in the cave in northern Chiang Rai province during a desperate search that lasted more than a week and drew international help. Officials said on Tuesday that the boys, aged 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach were mostly in stable medical condition and have received high-protein liquid food.

Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda, a member of the country's ruling military junta, said on Tuesday that the boys may need to swim out using diving equipment ahead of bad weather forecast for later in the week. He said the boys would be brought out via the same complicated route through which their rescuers entered.

This map shows what a huge challenge it will be to rescue the soccer team stuck in a Thai cave system

  • A soccer team and its coach are stranded in a partially flooded cave system in northern Thailand.
  • Authorities say they need to either learn to dive or wait months for flooding to subside before they can leave.
  • The map shows how complicated it will be to get them out.

A soccer team stranded in a Thai cave system for more than a week was found relatively healthy on Monday, but it may take months to get everyone out.

Authorities say the only ways the 12 teenage boys and their coach can escape will be by learning to scuba dive, getting dragged out by divers, or waiting months for the flooding that trapped them in the cave to subside.

The Tham Luang cave system in the Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand is a complex series of tunnels that are now partially flooded:

The boys, who are ages 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach were found alive on an elevated dry rock about 2 1/2 miles from the mouth of the cave after nine days of searches.

It was particularly difficult for the rescuers to locate them because the cave system consists of dark, narrow bends that sometimes fit only one person, Ben Reymenants, one of the divers involved in the search, told Sky News.

It took the divers at least four hours to swim to the point in the cave system where the team was located, he said.

“This is one of the more extreme cave dives that I have done,” Reymenants added. “It is very far, and very complex. There is current. The visibility can be zero at times.”

Thailand cave rescue: Secret passage could save trapped boys
5 Jul, 2018 1:53pm

A treacherous flooded passage filled with hazardous bends and next to no visibility is the biggest challenge facing the trapped schoolboys as authorities race to drain water from a flooded cave in Thailand.

The world watches with bated breath while the 12 starved boys and their football coach, who have been stranded for almost two weeks now, are reportedly being trained in how to breathe with scuba equipment as they prepare for a possible attempt at leaving the cave this morning.

However, several diving experts have warned that the mission is extremely dangerous — seeing as none of the boys can swim or ever used scuba gear and the cave's narrow passageways pose a significant challenge for even the best cave divers.

In particular, a narrow 750-metre flooded stretch of the Tham Luang Nang Non cave, which took experienced cave divers around three hours to navigate, poses an ominous obstacle for the inexperienced boys aged between 11 and 16 in the desperate rescue option.
[....]
As part of a desperate attempt to save the boys, Thai authorities are also trying to suss out whether there could be a secret passage to safety.

This morning, Claus Rasmussen, who is part of the rescue team, said the boys have told divers they heard dogs barking, a rooster crowing and children playing — raising suspicions that there may be a hidden passage to safety from deep within the cave.

As much as I HATE the guardian... it's a Fake News Liberal rag....

They do have a live blog for updates on this story (Paused at the moment)
https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/ ... -rain-live

What we know so far

  • We are now into the third day since the boys were located in the cave in northern Thailand.
  • Authorities have announced they have reduced the water levels in the first section of the cave – a 1.5km stretch from the entrance to a point they are calling chamber three – by 40%. It is now possible to walk through the water up to chamber three.
  • The rescue plan is proceeding on three separate fronts.
  • Plan A is to teach the boys to dive so that they can dive out of the cave escorted by navy divers, and the governor reported that the boys have begun doing practice dives in the cave.
  • Plan B is to drain the cave system so that the children can walk out of the caves wearing life jackets meaning they don’t need to dive.
  • Each pump – and there are hundreds at the site – can drain 13,000 litres per hour. Authorities are installing more pumps and are asking electrical engineers to find a way to provide more power for the operation.
  • Plan C is to drill down to the cave where the boys are stranded and rescue them that way. The governor earlier ruled out drilling as an option because the boys are between 800m and 1km below the surface and in a confined space, so it was not thought to be safe.
  • Chiang Rai provincial governor Narongsak Osatanakorn said they were in a “race against time” and were evaluating risk levels to assess when they should evacuate rescue teams, given that monsoon rains are predicted to arrive on the weekend.

Thank you for this update, Rumpole. Yeah well, if that's the only source for details, I guess we have to go with it.

I've been thinking about the option discussed about waiting months to rescue them. I'm glad that is off the table. I can't imagine that. :roll I also think Plan A is a bit silly but I don't know all the facts.

One of the problems with waiting... is water could rise even more.

Not sure how big an area they have... but human "waste" could be a problem... on top of all the garbage from empty food containers etc. Mind you... now that I think about it... I wonder if they could set up a rope line of some sort.. just to haul food and stuff back and forth? Maybe they have already done that?

-----
The question I have is.. "What were they thinking".....

People should KNOW that these caves get flooded (when it rains)..... why are they open to public at all?

Massive challenge in mission to rescue trapped boys

https://www.news.com.au/world/asia/mass ... a9808632f1

A Thai diving website, Digitalay, has also posted a sketch which shows how divers must tackle the perilous 3km stretch.

Using a rope guideline, the volunteers would be submerged by 10m at each flooded point in the passage and divers would have to dismount their scuba kits to stand any chance of getting through.

Oh I like the graphic, I'm a visual type you know.
It's much more clear what is happening overall and what obstacles have face.

Thanks for the updates, Rumpole! :)

Very sad to hear....

It points to how difficult conditions are.... I think the plan to assist boys out just got more unlikely.

Thai cave rescue: Former Navy SEAL dies from lack of oxygen

The man has been identified as retired Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Saman Kunan who volunteered for the operation after having left his post.

Image

The rescuer lost consciousness after placing oxygen tanks in the cave and could not be revived despite first-aid attempts by his dive partner.

Authorities say the cave system, Mae Sai, northern Thailand, is losing oxygen as they continue to try and deliver air supplies to the boys and coach through a pipe.

They say the ventilation pipe must reach them today.

"It was sad news, a former SEAL who volunteered to help died last night about 2am," Chiang Rai deputy governor Passakorn Boonyaluck told reporters. "His job was to deliver oxygen (in the cave). He did not have enough on his way back."

Thai SEAL commander Apakorn Yookongkaew said Mr Kunan, who was working in a volunteer capacity, was coming back from the spot inside the Thuam Luang cave where the group had been located when his supplies ran short.

"On his way back he lost consciousness," Mr Yookongkaew said, adding that a friend had tried to help bring him out.

"But even though we have lost one man, we still have faith to carry out our work."

The 'choke point': Terrifyingly narrow 15-inch passage trapped Thai football players must squeeze through to safety as two more elite British divers arrive on the scene with half a ton of rescue gear

  • Divers have to squeeze through an incredibly narrow passage to reach the stranded football team
  • Tight, difficult to navigate section of the tunnel has a sharp upward bend followed by a downward slope
  • The boys would have to crawl out of the water swirling with silt in complete darkness guided by divers
  • Then they must clamber across a rocky peak before descending into the murky waters again
  • Two more British divers arrived to help with the mammoth effort to bring the 12 boys and their coach home

Thai cave: Rescue of trapped boys under way
Last updated 14:10, July 8 2018

An attempt to rescue at least some of the Thai boys trapped in a sprawling cave complex is under way, officials confirm, 15 days after the boys and their coach became trapped.

The announcement from authorities came as dark monsoon rain clouds loomed over the mountainous north of the country early on Sunday (1.30pm, NZT), potentially heightening risks at the cave where rescuers were still waging a "war with water and time" to save the 12 trapped boys and their coach.

Officials have cleared the site, and ambulances, medics and divers are arriving. Tarpaulin sheets blocking off the divers' operating area have been set up.

Thai rescue workers have drilled through rock connected to the cave the 12 boys are trapped inside, in an attempt to get them out safely.

A reminder of where the boys are and the difficulty of the rescue mission.

Though rescuers have been able to clear a huge amount of water out of the cave system, meaning it is possible to wade through the first 1.5km of the cave, parts of the journey are still treacherous and it is an 11-hour round trip for experienced adult divers.

Press Conference

The press conference has begun and officials have thanked the media for their cooperation, saying they need space to work.

“We will still maintain our planned mission and the two main obstacles are time and water,” the spokesperson said.

“I can confirm we will wait until we are 100% ready until we start the action,” said the official.

The official also said that no shafts found by search teams in the jungle have potential, ruling out drilling as a possible way to rescue the boys.

“Today is the peak of our readiness,” said Narongsak Osottanakorn, a former provincial governor who is leading the rescue efforts.

At 10am (half hour ago), 18 divers entered the cave – 13 international divers and five Thai divers.

The governor said that the factors affecting the readiness for any rescue attempt are the weather, the water, and the readiness of the team the condition of the boys.

“Today is the peak of our readiness,” said Narongsak.

It is possible for divers to advance to the third chamber on foot. It’s not dry but it’s the lowest the water level has been, said the governor.

The rescue mission has begun, the governor has confirmed at a press conference this morning.

18 divers have been sent into the caves to retrieve the 12 boys and their football coach. The 13 people inside the cave have been informed and are ready and their families have been informed.

Medical teams have been rehearsing for three days and are ready to treat the group when they emerge.

The governor said the earliest the boys will come out is 9pm tonight (10am EST), due to the long journey from where they are located and the entrance and they cannot guarantee the mission will be completed today, because the boys will all come out gradually.

A spokesman is speaking now and said they had been aided by lower than expected rainfall.

An Australian doctor assessed the boys last night and gave them the all-clear, said the governor. Once they are out of the cave they will choose the most suitable way to move them and have helicopters on standby in case they are needed.

The operation could take three to four days, said an army spokesperson and the mission “depends on the weather”.

Despite this, the governor reported that all of the 12 boys and their coach are “very ready” to come out.

The press conference has now finished.
