I have been keeping half an eye on developments, but was hoping it wouldn't come to much.

But it seems the disease itself continues to spread and can be considered a PANDEMIC

There is also potential for a HUGE effect on International trade and economies world wide...

Coronavirus: New travel restrictions for Iran announced
3:49 pm today

The government has announced new travel restrictions for Iran as it fights back against the global spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Health Minister David Clark confirmed that the travel restrictions for Iran will take effect from today.

He also announced there would be no exemptions for students from China to enter the country and an increased health staff presence at international airports.

Dr Clark said the enhanced travel restrictions and an increased border presence added to the government's existing actions to limit the risk of the virus entering the country.

"The situation in Iran is obviously concerning. There is ongoing spread of the disease there, and a large degree of uncertainty about the scale of the outbreak and the ability to contain it.

"Based on the medical and scientific advice, Ministers have put in place further temporary travel restrictions covering incoming travellers from Iran. This means people will not be able to travel from Iran to New Zealand and anyone who has been in Iran in the last 14 days will need to self-isolate."

He said this was a "sensible precaution" as many airlines had already cancelled flights from Iran.

"New Zealand citizens and permanent residents will still be allowed to return home, but will be told to self-isolate for 14 days.

"These restrictions will come into force immediately, and will initially apply until midnight Tuesday 3 March. They will be reviewed every 48 hours, which is the same approach being taken to the China travel restrictions that have been in place since 3 February."

Testing was under way for a suspected Coronavirus case in New Zealand. Ministry of Health says results expected later today.

More than 120 people have been tested for the virus, but none have so far returned a positive result.

New Zealand confirms case of Covid-19 coronavirus
13 minutes ago

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed a suspected case of Covid-19 coronavirus has tested positive.

She said the person was in their sixties, and was a citizen of New Zealand who had recently travelled from Iran via Bali.

They were in an improving condition in isolation in Auckland hospital after arriving on Thursday night.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said the person arrived this week from Iran, where the virus had been rapidly spreading.

He earlier said five people were being tested for the virus in New Zealand, but only this person fit the definition of a suspected case.

He said 130 tests for Covid-19 had been done this month, all of them negative except this one.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health said they received the test results about 4.15pm today.

The ministry said the patient was being treated in Auckland City Hospital in an improving condition in isolation.

The chances of community outbreak remained low, the ministry said, and public risk from the new infection was being well managed because of the public messaging, awareness of Covid-19 and public health response to managing cases and contacts.

More to come ...

Coronavirus: Flight passenger close to New Zealand victim closes business, furious at lack of warning
29 Feb, 2020 11:10am
Nicholas Jones, investigative reporter at the New Zealand Herald

A man who was within 10 rows of a person infected with coronavirus on a flight to New Zealand is furious authorities have not contacted him - and National are now criticising the official response.

The Aucklander reopened his business after arriving home from Bali on the Wednesday flight, something that put him in contact with a number of clients throughout Friday.

He only learnt a fellow passenger had coronavirus after friends saw it on the news last night. Despite having no symptoms himself, he has now closed his business and put himself into self-isolation.

Health officials have advised any concerned travellers to contact Healthline, but will only directly contact those in the two rows ahead or behind the infected patient, who is now in an isolation room in Auckland City Hospital.

National health spokesman Michael Woodhouse has today criticised advice to passengers on EK450, saying he has been contacted by a passenger who developed a cough after landing - but was told not to self-isolate.

"He called Healthline asking whether he should go to the hospital for a check-up. He was told not to worry if his temperature is under 38 degrees. He was also advised to take Panadol which would lower a temperature.

"He was told that he would not need to self-isolate and could go to work on Monday. He has chosen to go into isolation anyway. Health Minister David Clark should be directing his officials to track down everyone who was on that flight. It's extraordinary that someone with flu-like symptoms on this flight hasn't been told to self-isolate."

Coronavirus: All passengers on Emirates flight will be contacted
Catrin Owen, 14:18, Feb 29 2020

All passengers on an Emirates flight from Bali to Auckland will be contacted.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says passengers on board the flight carrying a passenger who tested positive for coronavirus will be proactively contacted by authorities.

She made the announcement at a press conference on Saturday. It's an about-turn from previous statements from authorities saying only passengers in rows close to the passenger would be contacted.

Healthline and the Auckland Primary Health Organisation would work together to reach those passengers, who travelled to Auckland on Emirates flight EK450 on Wednesday. The infected passenger left Tehran and stopped in Dubai and Bali en route to New Zealand.

The u-turn comes after one passenger on board the flight criticised authorities' response. The Auckland barber said he had no idea he had been on the same flight until he saw media reports, and was now proactively quarantining himself.

Contact made with passengers in close contact with coronavirus patient
4:25 pm today

The Ministry of Health says it has contacted 18 people who sat near a person infected with coronavirus on a flight to Auckland.

They are all in self-isolation and have not yet shown any symptoms of Covid-19.

The Director-General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, said there has been initial contact with the 18 people by either cellphone or email, but that efforts will be made to follow-up any emails with face-to-face contact.

The people are mostly in Auckland, but one is in Nelson and one is in Christchurch.

Dr Bloomfield said officials are also making contact with the remaining passengers on the flight as a precaution.

"Now we do know that the spread of any infectious agents in an aircraft is limited by the air circulation systems because they have excellent filtration systems in modern aircraft, so that this disease which is spread by droplets rather than aerosolised is only likely to spread to those in close contact."

The number of confirmed cases of the virus in New Zealand remains at one.

The infected person, a New Zealander aged in their 60s, travelled from Iran via Bali and wore a mask on the Emirates flight to New Zealand on Wednesday.

This person was admitted to Auckland Hospital and tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday, but is now stable and improving.

Coronavirus: Passengers from Auckland flight still sought, workers worried about sick leave
8:08 am today

Health officials are working to track down the remaining passengers from a flight to Auckland that carried a person infected with Covid-19.

They're also trying to meet with all of the eighteen most at-risk passengers who sat near to that person, who travelled to Auckland from Iran, via Bali.

The director-general of health, Ashley Bloomfield, said officials have made contact with the 18 at-risk passengers by email or phone, and are requesting in-person meetings.

These passengers include both New Zealand citizens and visitors.

Officials are also trying to contact the remaining passengers who touched down in Auckland from Iran last Wednesday, as a precaution, he said.

Iran has now been included in the travel ban alongside China.

The infected person wore a mask on the flight to New Zealand, and the ministry said they remain in a stable and improving condition in hospital.

Two monitored for coronavirus in Nelson
3:58 pm today
Tracy Neal, Nelson Reporter

Nelson-Marlborough Health has confirmed that two people from the region are being monitored for any signs they have contracted coronavirus.

A health board spokesperson said the two were passengers on the Emirates flight from Dubai to Auckland, via Bali, on which a traveller was confirmed on Friday as having the virus.

The two people in the Nelson-Marlborough region were now in isolation and were being monitored daily by the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Services, but neither had been tested.

The health board has been on alert since January and has since been planning a management response.

Nelson-Marlborough's chief medical officer Nick Baker was urging people with cold or flu symptoms to call their health provider rather than turn up at a clinic.

Will Sen. Chris Murphy infect the entire US Senate with COVID-19?

Image

Iranian FM Zarif and his entourage were likely COVID-19 carriers at the Munich Security Conference. The Democrat party senator who met with him for over an hour in Zarif's hotel room must be watched for signs of disease.

Coronavirus update: 155 tests carried out, 31 tests now underway
43 minutes ago

Health authorities have assured New Zealanders there is no rationing of testing for the Covid-19 coronavirus, with capacity to test hundreds of patients a day.

In the latest update this afternoon, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said there was still just the one confirmed case of Covid-19 in New Zealand.

Dr Bloomfield said there had been 155 tests carried out, with just one returning a positive result, and there were 31 tests under way.

He said one of the two tests he had mentioned yesterday had come back negative. Later this afternoon the second case also returned as negative.

"We still assess our likelihood of a widespread community outbreak is low," Dr Bloomfield said.

Yes. Hard to know what to do.

I was ignoring it (mostly). We always naturally have rice and stuff to last a while, but my fellow citizens went a bit nuts last weekend and cleared shelves in store.

Coronavirus: Second confirmed New Zealand case in Auckland, after taking two domestic flights
Tom Hunt and Laura Wiltshire and Katarina Williams
12:22, Mar 04 2020

A second New Zealand coronavirus case has now been confirmed.

The World Health Organisation on Wednesday confirmed the second case of covid-19 in New Zealand.

The WHO said both cases were imported, and were not locally transmitted.

The Ministry of Health's Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the New Zealand woman in her 30s had recently returned from Italy. The case was confirmed last night.

The woman's partner is also showing symptoms. Bloomfield said he was expecting the result of the woman's partner test for the virus back today

The woman had travelled on Air New Zealand flight NZ0283 from Singapore to Auckland on 25 February. Other passengers of the flight were now being contacted.

The woman also took two domestic flights from Palmerston North and Auckland and back again on 2 March. Contact will be made with people on these flights as well, he said.

Coronavirus: 70 University of Auckland medical students called back to New Zealand
4 Mar, 2020 2:06pm
Jamie Morton, Science Reporter, NZ Herald

About 70 University of Auckland medical students posted overseas are being called back home - an unprecedented step amid the global spread of Covid-19

The university says another 150 students could also be affected if its suspension stays in place for the rest of the academic year.

The students have been based at hospitals and clinics around the world as part of medical electives, which allow them to gain hands-on experience in their specific fields.

"To be fair to all fifth and sixth year students, we decided to suspend all international placements, even to low-risk countries, until further notice," Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences dean Professor John Fraser said.
