OAKLAND, Calif. — The attorney for the family of Jahi Mcmath, Christopher Dolan, said late Wednesday that medical procedures to insert feeding and breathing tubes into the 13-year-old girl were successful.
Dolan also said doctors say her condition has stabilized and are optimistic her health is improving.
The Oakland teen was declared brain dead last month.
But as of Wednesday, McMath’s case was at the center of a political controversy.
A fundraising e-mail was sent out over Christmas by the southern California-based organization Consumer Watchdog that features a picture of Jahi.
And it says in part quote:
"...Hospitals like Oakland Children's Hospital and their doctors have an economic incentive to let children under their care who are victims of negligence die, rather than save them. That's outrageous."
The e-mail then asks for financial donations and support for a proposed state ballot initiative that would hold hospitals more accountable for negligence, and raise the $250,000 limit on medical malpractice lawsuits.
“This is the most shameful and shameless political mailer I have seen in my career," said Sam Singer, spokesman for Children's Hospital.
Dolan told KTVU that he supported the proposed ballot measure but does not condone using Jahi in the e-mail.
