Netanyahu wins party vote in boost ahead of Israeli election
Dan Williams, Rami Ayyub

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu easily won a vote to keep the Likud party helm, the party said on Friday, in a boost ahead of what is likely to be a hard-fought general election in March.

Netanyahu won 72.5% of votes in Thursday’s party ballot, against 27.5% for challenger Gideon Saar, who conceded, tweeting that he would now back the incumbent “for the sake of a Likud victory in the (general) election”.

The challenge by Saar, a former education and interior minister, had added to pressures on the four-term premier, who is under indictment and fighting for political survival.

Netanyahu’s rival in those elections, Benny Gantz of the Blue and White party, was also unable to form a coalition, leading to political deadlock and a third election on March 2.

Good news.
I hope he can overcome the “Witch hunt” he faces… and… it’s 3rd time LUCKY for some sort of majority coming out of an Israeli election. (March 2)

I think the difficulties in getting a stable result in past 2 Israeli elections should give people reason to PAUSE when they call for a “Proportional” election system.

Netanyahu also subject to HOAX accusations............

Benjamin Netanyahu delivers address on immunity request
https://www.pscp.tv/w/1jMJgweVZwmJL?t=27

Netanyahu Announces He Is Requesting Immunity From Prosecution in Three Criminal Cases

Gantz: 'Netanyahu knows he's guilty'. Lieberman vows not to let PM get immunity. Legal proceedings blocked due to political stalemate

Jonathan Lis and Chaim Levinson Jan 01, 2020

"I intend to ask the Knesset speaker to let me implement my right, my duty and my mission to continue serving you for the future of Israel," Netanyahu said at press conference in Jerusalem. "There are people, who unlike me, did commit grave crimes and they have life-long immunity. They are just on the right side of the media and the left wing," he added.

The prime minister noted in his address that "by law, immunity is temporary. It is cancelled as soon as the Knesset that gave it is dissolved. By law, there is no possibility to avoid trial."
[....]
According to Israeli law, the Knesset House Committee is to discuss his request and should it be approved, the request will need to pass a vote by the Knesset plenum.

However, since a House Committee has not been appointed since the April general election, and is not expected to be assembled before the upcoming March election, the discussion will only take place in several months. Until the committee makes a decision, an indictment against Netanyahu can't be handed officially to the court.

Netanyahu resigns from all ministerial positions

PM resigns from all ministerial portfolios he held, and will appoint replacements in the coming days.

Hezki Baruch, 02/01/20

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu informed the government on Wednesday evening that he is resigning from all his positions as minister.

Netanyahu said he will appoint ministers to all the posts he held in the coming days.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce the new ministers at the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, when the appointments will likely be confirmed.

However, Netanyahu's resignation has no practical significance until replacements are appointed, due to the fact that, when a minister resigns from his post, that ministerial portfolio is transferred to the Prime Minister.

Earlier, it was reported that Shas chairman, Minister Aryeh Deri, spoke with Netanyahu in recent days and the two agreed that Shas would receive another ministerial portfolio. It is believed that Meshulam Nahari will be appointed as a minister, most likely as the Welfare Minister.

Political officials say that MK David Bitan, a close associate of Netanyahu, may be appointed Minister of Agriculture. It is also believed is that Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely will be appointed as Minister of Diaspora Affairs.

Defense Ministry announces ‘breakthrough’ in anti-missile laser development

New laser system to be tested over coming year, is meant to complement the Iron Dome air defense system to shoot down incoming rockets, drones

By Judah Ari Gross, 8 January 2020

Israel’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday announced that it was developing a laser beam capable of shooting down incoming rockets and small drones, which it plans to test throughout the coming year.

According to the ministry, the development of this laser system was possible due to a recent unspecified “technological breakthrough,” following years of investment in research efforts by defense contractors and academic scientists.

The futuristic defense system is only in the early development stages and won’t be operational in the near future, the ministry said.

Trump peace plan gives Israel chunks of West Bank, creates Palestinian state

50-page political outline calls for four-year settlement freeze, but leaves many settlements intact, US officials say

By Matthew Lee and Aron Heller

WASHINGTON (AP) — US officials say President Donald Trump’s long-awaited Middle East peace plan calls for the creation of a State of Palestine with its capital in portions of East Jerusalem, ending speculation as to whether his administration, in preparing a proposal without input from Palestinian leaders, would abandon a “two-state resolution” to the conflict.

The officials say the plan to be unveiled on Tuesday more than doubles the territory currently under Palestinian control, although it also recognizes Israeli sovereignty over major settlement blocs in the West Bank, something to which the Palestinians will almost certainly object. The Palestinians have already rejected the proposal, accusing Trump of being biased in favor of Israel as he has adopted policies that bolster Israel at their expense.

The plan does call for a four-year freeze in new Israeli settlement construction, during which time details of a comprehensive agreement would be negotiated, according to the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Trump’s announcement. However, it was not immediately clear if the freeze could be extended if a final deal is not concluded in the four years.

Israel Election Results: Netanyahu Hails 'Great Victory' as Exit Polls Show Him Surging Past Gantz

Netanyahu's right-wing bloc projected to win 59 seats in Israel election exit polls – two shy of ruling majority. Gantz vows to keep on fighting

Haaretz
Mar 03, 2020 1:15 AM

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party is set to become Israel’s largest party, according to exit polls published shortly after voting ended in the country’s third election in a year. However, neither Netanyahu nor his chief rival Benny Gantz are projected a clear Knesset majority.

Voting ended at 10 P.M., and official results are expected as early as Monday overnight.
