4:05 p.m. ET: West is asking about some of the guidelines Nakasona believes need to be followed to have a valid recording to determine have an accurate identification. Nakasone said the voice sample being analyzed needs to be 16 seconds long.

4:01 p.m. ET: Nakasone said voice identification should only be used for an investigative tool now, and in a couple years it may be able to be used in courts.

4:16 p.m. ET: On the recording, the caller can be heard calling 911 reporting an altercation. Someone can be heard in the background. Zimmerman looked down at his chest as the audio was being played.

4:12 p.m. ET: The defense is trying to play the audio recording of the 911 call.

4:09 p.m. ET: West is now asking Nakasone about the analysis his office conducted in Zimmerman's case. He is now going to play the recording that is at the center of this hearing.

FBI looks for at least 14 seconds of voice to analyze. In the 911 call after segmenting out the screaming they were left with ~3 seconds.

Very difficult to analyze due to emotion.

System can't distinguish between normal speech and abnormal (emotional) speech. System assumes garbage in, garbage out. Want to assume speech being analyzed is normal; speech in the 911 tape was not normal.

'I don't think anybody right now has a system in which you can compare emotional screaming to reasonable normal speech.'

Boom

Jan - that's how it sounds from West's questioning.

Thanks Remote. (Sorry for the delayed response. I went for a long walk off a short pier. :WW )

4:19 p.m. ET: Nakasone said the screaming on the recording is almost impossible to analyze, because the voice changes dramatically under stress.

State seems to be taking the position that the FBI are a bunch of amateurs, not sure what their end point is going to be.

This attorney is like "lot of variables" "one expert might come to a different conclusion than another" "board of standards hasn't issued standards yet" ....

seems to me he's helping make the defense case... this stuff ain't ready for prime time. Particularly with scream to voice comparison.

State trying to argue that one can talk to another and be able to distinguish/recognize their voice. Not sure how they are going to go from that argument to hearing screaming 10+ meters away in the background of a phone call.
