This lucky Alaska town has a cat for a mayor

The cat’s out of the bag on the secret to this small Alaska town’s success: a mayor with four paws and a whiskered grin. “Stubbs” is a part-Manx kitty who happened upon the Talkeetna political scene 15 years ago when voters—disenchanted with their mayoral candidates—launched a write-in campaign. The cat won over the town of 900 people, and though his title is merely honorary, he is credited with spawning a blitz of attention that elevated the city to its current status as a tourist destination. Out-of-towners still stop in every day to visit the furry feline at the general store, where the aging politician spends most of his days lounging around.

WOW! Who knew Alaskans were so smart!!

It makes a lot of sense - I may now create a POLITICS forum, provided it is only about felines.

Can we get Stubbs on the ballot for this years Presidential race?

WHO would he pick as a running "mate"?

Perhaps.....

:6 Stubbs/Trim 2012 :8

(They will need the Black Cat Humans vote.)

A winning combination for sure....off the top of my head... a campaign slogan

A real Cat is preferable to a Pussy - Vote Stubbs/Trim

As the story goes, 15 years ago several of the town residents didn't like the candidates who were running for mayor of Talkeetna, so as a joke, they encouraged enough people to elect Stubbs the cat as a write-in candidate, and he actually won.

This could work 2012 :31

***BREAKING NEWS***

Talkeetna 'mayor' Stubbs the cat fights for his life after dog attack
Jerzy Shedlock
September 2, 2013

A local dog on Saturday evening reportedly mauled Stubbs the cat, honorary mayor of the Alaska community of Talkeetna, a small town of about 900 north of Anchorage and the launching pad for Mt. McKinley expeditions. The prominent pussy cat suffered a deep gash about four inches wide; the loose dog cut through Stubbs’ skin and muscle. According to Stubbs’ owner, the cat is clinging to life at a veterinarian’s office in the nearby town of Wasilla.

On a dreary Saturday evening in downtown Talkeetna, Stubbs was strolling on the main street of the tiny hamlet. He had only strutted a few stores down from Nagley's General Store, the workplace of his owner, Laurie Stec. Stec has managed the store for years.

Apparently, a dog that Stec said is known to locals as a mean one, darted across the street and attacked the mayor.

Stec was sitting at home when she got a call about the attack. Stubbs had the strength to run for cover after the mauling, and Talkeetna residents were searching for their missing mayor.

“People were looking around with headlights and flashlights; everybody was pretty upset,” Stec said on Monday. “All I could think was ‘I can’t let him die out here in the rain.’”

The "Would be assassin" is still at large :eek

Outraged by what happened, Stec has called animal control to search for the alleged canine assailant, and the dog’s owner. Talkeetna is Talkeetna, Stec said, and people keep a lot of pets in rural Alaska. But pet owners need to take responsibility, she lamented. If your dog is aggressive, take responsibility and keep it locked up, she offered.

Attempts to contact the dog's reported owner were not immediately successful Monday.

Stubbs, the honorary cat mayor of Alaskan town that held the role since he was a kitten, dies aged 20

  • Stubbs was elected mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, in a write-in campaign in 1998
  • The yellow cat was found in a box full of kittens in front of Nagley's General Store
  • Manager Lauri Stec gave him the name Stubbs because he had no tail
  • In 2013, the tabby was attacked by a dog and was left with a punctured lung and a fractured sternum
  • The owners say one of their kittens, Denali, could become Stubbs's replacement

Stubbs (pictured in May 2016), the honorary feline mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska
Image

'Stubbs lived for 20 years and 3 months,' the family wrote. 'He was a trooper until the very last day of his life; meowing at us throughout the day to pet him or to come sit on the bed with him and let him snuggle and purr for hours in our lap.

'Thank you, Stubbs, for coming into our lives for the past 31 months; you are a remarkable cat and we will dearly miss you. We loved the time we were allowed to spend with you.'

The yellow tabby was found in a box full of kittens in front of the general store.

Lauri Stec, Nagley's manager, decided to keep one kitten and named it Stubbs because he had no tail.

Talkeetna, a town with a population of about 900, elected Stubbs in a write-in campaign in 1998, after disappointment with that year's candidates according to KTVA-TV.

There is no human mayor in the town.

Stubbs has been at the center of numerous death rumors before, including when he was attacked by a dog in 2013. Although he didn't die, the feline was left with a punctured lung, a fractured sternum and a five-inch gash on his side.

By late 2016, he was largely staying at home instead of being out and about at local Nagley's General Store.

Although Stubbs is gone, one of his owners' kittens might be ready to take up his mayoral mantle.

'Amazingly, Denali has the exact personality as Stubbs,' the family wrote of the kitten.

'He loves the attention, he's like a little puppy when he's around people. We couldn't have asked for a better understudy than Denali - he really has followed in Stubbs' pawprints in just about everything.'
