“Smelly Trees” Prevent Christmas Tree Theft in New Jersey Town

‘Tis the season to … prevent pine tree theft by spraying them with a foul-smelling repellent? Something like that.

One New Jersey town has been victim of this Christmas tree theft around the holiday, with residents stealing trees during the happy season. Now, the mayor of Port Republic is fighting back in an interesting way.

Mayor Gary Giberson said his friends in the forest industry made a recommendation, telling him to combine deer repellent with moss bunker juice to ward off the thieves. The result? Fox News correspondent Trace Gallagher described the stench as a mix between rotten eggs and rotten fish. Mmmmmm.

“When you get within five feet of that tree, you won’t want to take it into your living room,” Giberson said he was told. Sure enough, not a single tree has been stolen since the spray was used. Well, let’s say we’re not surprised.

This story has ben around a few weeks... with the woman initially forced to take display down... now it seems it's back :24

Woman Permitted to Display Holiday Lights in Shape of Middle Finger

Image

Sarah Childs, a resident of Louisiana, had to deal with the police after she upset her neighbors by hanging her Christmas lights in the shape of a middle finger. Childs was arguing with her neighbors in Denham Springs, which is east of Baton Rouge, which is why she decided to send them a message using her holiday decorations.

After her neighbors complained, officers threatened to arrest Childs, which led to her and the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana to sue the city. On Thursday, a judge ruled in the favor of Childs.

Nevada man dies with $200 in bank, $7M in gold hidden inside home
Published September 17, 2012
Associated Press

A Carson City, Nev., recluse whose body was found in his home at least a month after he died left only $200 in his bank account.

But as Walter Samaszko Jr.'s house was being cleared for sale, officials made a surprise discovery: gold bars and coins valued at $7 million.

"Nobody had any clue he was hoarding the gold," Carson City Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover told the Las Vegas Sun, adding it was found stored in boxes in the house and garage.

The 69-year-old Samaszko was found dead in his home in late June after neighbors called authorities. He had been dead of heart problems for at least a month, according to the coroner.

He had lived in the house since the 1960s, and his mother lived with him until her death in 1992.

He left no will and had no apparent close relatives. But using a list of those who attended the mother's funeral, Glover's office tracked down Arlene Magdanz, a first cousin in San Rafael, Calif., the Sun reported.

Travellers deal to passenger from hell
Last updated 14:12 05/01/2013

SLEEPING SOUNDLY: The snap of the passenger from hell
after he was dealt to by his cabin mates.

A drunken passenger reportedly spent an almost six-hour flight bound and gagged after his behaviour forced his fellow passengers to tape him to his seat.

One of those passengers was Andy Ellwood, who posted a photo of the man taped up on Tumblr.

Ellwood offered a brief caption to the photo, saying the incident happened on a flight from Iceland to New York on Thursday.

The man reportedly drank his entire quota of duty free liquor in the first hour of the flight, and then tried to strangle another passenger before screaming the plane was going down.

"When he became unruly, (i.e. trying to choke the woman next to him and screaming the plane was going to crash), fellow passengers subdued him and tie him up for the rest of the flight," Ellwood said.

"He was escorted off the flight by police when it landed."

According to the Daily Mail, the man also spat on several passengers during his meltdown which happened just a few hours into the flight.

IcelandAir confirmed to reporters the man was acting dangerously but would not comment on the picture.

It is not known whether the man had any mental health issues but the Mail said a Port Authority spokesman confirmed the passenger was taken to hospital

Authorities had also decided not to charge him.

''It was pretty cold. I went a bit numb in there, but it was good. It was fun doing it once you were there.''

Not everyone had quite so much fun though.

Dave Jarvis, 31, did not win the cash. Instead he left bloodied and bandaged after face-planting his water entry.

''I was pretty excited to have a swim with no clothes on. I dived in. I was a bit anxious to get myself in the water, since I was naked.

''I pretty much just hit the bottom. There were some shells and I cut myself up.''

Mr Jarvis received cuts to his nose, chin, chest, arms, knees and feet, he said.

Despite the mishap, he said "'it was a great morning.''

The event was organised by radio station ZM to celebrate the beginning of spring.

What is the gal (2nd from left) carrying over her shoulder? Some type of blow gun / spear? When I scuba'd in Fiji and Vanuatu, 2 guys in our group carried similar-looking devices that were spear-guns. The idiots were immediately grounded---literally---not allowed to continue to scuba when they proudly popped up with speared tropical fish. AND they actually stepped on coral! Ohhhh, every one was so pizzzed at them. Dorks. Both MD's. Figures. Right up there with lawyers---Ego, Ego, Ego. At least, they kept their clothes on! Thank Goodness! That would NOT have been a pretty sight.

I added the quote of my post to your reply, dmoseylou... it's so far back I needed to refresh my mind :24

To be quite honest... I never noticed the girl was carrying anything... I guess I was distracted? :12

Looks like a toy gun to me? Water pistol?

But you could be right.... I have not done any scuba diving, but used to snorkel off beaches near Auckland.

The foot hazard I remember was "sea eggs" or "Kina"

Horrible prickles with some sort of "poison" which causes pain and infection and the tips break off after penetrating the skin.

Supposedly a food delicacy broken open to eat contents raw...but slimy brown fishy snot is not my thing.

The internal shells do make attractive ornaments.

I was thinking it was a knife. Maybe in case a shark tried to attack? Or to protect herself from the gawkers! :84

I used to snorkel...and once scuba dived at Buck Island off of St. Croix. It was a really wonderful experience.

I have a few Kina shells that I've picked up off beaches in the Caribbean, but never knew what they were called or what lived inside them.

A wonderful animal... you can have the poisoned foot, an entre to eat and then a shell to keep as a memento :45

Man told to bring own undies to jail steals undies on way to jail

When you tell a man who has been repeatedly convicted for shoplifting that he’s gonna have to bring his own undies to his weekends in jail, there really is only one possible outcome. Alvin Rogers, a Virginia man, was recently given additional jail time after getting busted for stealing two sets of underwear, exactly what the Virginia man was required to bring for his weekend stays in the Accomack County Jail. Sigh. Some people just can't help themselves; even the prosecutor said Rogers was generally "a very pleasant man who was always extremely cooperative."

Students at Mahanoy Area High School in Pennsylvania must ask for toilet paper
Posted: 01/28/2013
Last Updated: 18 hours ago

MAHANOY CITY, Pa. - An eastern Pennsylvania high school says vandalism forced it to create a policy in which toilet paper has been taken out of the boys' bathrooms.

Boys at Mahanoy Area High School now must go to the school office to request toilet paper and sign it out. Principal Thomas Smith says that's helped solve a major problem of intentionally clogging toilets that's been going on for two years.

Smith says boys must sign out the toilet paper and then sign it back in. But the Republican-Herald of Pottsville reports some parents are protesting the policy.

Parent Karen Yedsena says some students are too embarrassed to go to the office to get toilet paper and are going home sick instead. School officials say they aren't aware of any such problems.

Tea and tutus at Barbie cafe
CHRISTINE LU AND ELAINE LIES

Tea, tutus and an overdose of pink are prominent on the menu at a just-opened Taipei cafe dedicated to all things Barbie.

Aficionados of the world's most famous doll can now gather to feast on light meals and an array of desserts adorned with the Barbie logo while seated at pink tables on chairs decorated with pink corsets and frothy tutus - pink, of course.

"Every little girl has a Barbie in childhood," said Henry Chiu, president of Sinlaku Taiwan Co Ltd and the owner of the cafe. "Barbie is a dream for a little girl. We want to make girls' dreams come true and build a fantasy world for them."

The store opened in the Taiwanese capital on Jan 30 after years of preparation and an investment of more than 50 million Taiwan dollars ($2 million) - the first such cafe authorized by Barbie-maker Mattel Inc .

Fans were quick with their praise.

"I feel like a Barbie doll in a fairy tale world, I feel like a princess," said Shiao Yu, a 30-year-old housewife on a visit to the cafe. "It's very dreamy."

A typical repast, offered at lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, costs 300 Taiwan dollars ($12) and gives at least a nod to health-consciousness.

"The menu is designed to show the calories of each dish," said He Chia-ling, 28, who works in marketing. "So office ladies like us can eat and still be fit and healthy like Barbie."

Nursing home defends prostitutes’ visits

The Chaseley nursing home in Eastbourne allowed "special visits"

The former manager of a nursing home has been forced to defend the level of “holistic care” offered to her patients after East Sussex council suggested that allowing prostitutes to visit her residents was inappropriate.

Residents of Chaseley nursing home, in Eastbourne, referred to them as “special visits”. The home’s care workers would take the visitors to a resident’s room. They then put a “special red sock” on the door and checked on them every 15 minutes.

The home, which mainly cares for disabled ex-servicemen, has long had a policy of facilitating sex workers. However a spokesman for the council said that it was unaware of the practice and was investigating because it “has the potential to place vulnerable ... residents at risk of exploitation and abuse.”

Helena Barrow, the home’s former manager, defended her use of outside contractors. “Sex workers are allowed by law to sexually enable people but care workers are not,” she said.

On one occasion the home organised a group activity, bringing in strippers to entertain residents.

Tuppy Owens, from the Sexual Health and Disability Alliance, said: “Many disabled people are living in perpetual frustration. What’s illegal is for disabled people to be denied their human rights.”

Funeral procession for Pennsylvania man stops at Burger King drive-thru
Published January 26, 2013
Associated Press

Jan. 26, 2013.: The hearse carrying David Kime, Jr. pulls up to the drive-through at the Burger King in York, Pa. (AP)

YORK, Pa. – Mourners at a Pennsylvania fast-food fan's funeral wanted him to have it his way, so they arranged for his hearse -- and the rest of the procession -- to make one last drive-thru visit before reaching the cemetery.

David Kime Jr. "lived by his own rules," daughter Linda Phiel said. He considered the lettuce on a burger his version of healthy eating, she said.

To give him a whopper of a send-off Saturday, the funeral procession stopped at a Burger King where each mourner got a sandwich for the road.

Kime got one last burger too, the York Daily Record reported. It was placed atop his flag-draped coffin at the cemetery.

Phiel said the display wasn't a joke, rather a happy way of honoring her father and the things that brought him joy.

"He lived a wonderful life and on his own terms," she said.

Kime, 88, a World War II veteran, died Jan. 20.

Restaurant manager Margaret Hess said she knew his face and his order. She and her crew made 40 burgers for the funeral procession.

"It's nice to know he was a loyal customer up until the end -- the very end," she said.
