Collusion probe off limits in second Manafort trial, U.S. judge rules
By Sarah N. Lynch

The federal judge overseeing the second trial of Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's one-time campaign chairman, ruled on Wednesday that a federal investigation of possible collusion between the campaign and Russia cannot be discussed during the trial.

The collusion investigation being led by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is "wholly irrelevant to the charges in this case," Judge Amy Berman Jackson said during a pre-trial hearing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Manafort’s trial will remain in Washington, D.C.
By Associated Press
September 5, 2018

WASHINGTON — Paul Manafort’s second trial will remain in the District of Columbia, a judge ruled Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said that the former Trump campaign chairman’s attorneys had failed to show that thorough jury questioning and careful instructions couldn’t ensure that both sides could pick an impartial jury in Washington.

Paul Manafort's lawyers have reportedly resumed talks of a possible plea deal ahead of his second trial
Sonam Sheth, Ellen Cranley
Sep 9, 2018, 1:54 AM

  • Paul Manafort’s lawyers are reportedly talking to prosecutors about a plea deal before his upcoming trial in Washington, DC.
  • Manafort is charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, money laundering, and failure to register as a foreign agent.
  • Discussions of a possible plea deal centered around which charges Manafort would plead guilty to and the length of his sentence.
  • A plea deal would not necessarily mean that Manafort is willing to flip in the Russia probe.

Paul Manafort and special counsel close to deal for guilty plea
CNN Digital Expansion 2018 Katelyn Polantz
By Evan Perez and Katelyn Polantz, CNN
Updated 2308 GMT (0708 HKT) September 13, 2018

Washington (CNN) Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and special counsel Robert Mueller are close to a deal for a guilty plea ahead of his upcoming trial, according to a source familiar with the matter.
A deal is expected but the source cautioned that the two sides have been close before.
The incentive appears to be to reach a deal ahead of a pre-trial motion hearing Friday, or before jury selection for Manafort's trial over allegations of illegal foreign lobbying gets underway next week at US District Court in Washington.

Paul Manafort Agrees to Cooperate With Special Counsel; Pleads Guilty to Reduced Charges
By Sharon LaFraniere and Kenneth P. Vogel
Sept. 14, 2018

WASHINGTON — Paul Manafort agreed on Friday to tell all he knows to the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, as part of a plea deal that could shape the final stages of the inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The deal was a surrender by Mr. Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, who had vowed for months to prove his innocence in a case stemming from his work as a political consultant in Ukraine. And it was a decisive triumph for Mr. Mueller, who now has a cooperating witness who was at the center of the Trump campaign during a crucial period in 2016 and has detailed insight into another target of federal prosecutors, the network of lobbyists and influence brokers seeking to help foreign interests in Washington.

Mr. Manafort’s decision, announced at a federal court hearing in Washington in which he pleaded guilty to two conspiracy charges, was likely to unsettle Mr. Trump, who had praised Mr. Manafort for standing up to prosecutors’ pressure and had hinted that he might pardon him.

It is not clear what information Mr. Manafort offered prosecutors in three days of negotiations that led to the plea deal. But in court on Friday, Mr. Manafort agreed to an open-ended arrangement that requires him to answer “fully, truthfully, completely and forthrightly” questions about “any and all matters” the government wants to ask about.

Manafort meets with Mueller prosecutors

The sit-down stems from a guilty plea that requires the former Trump campaign chairman to cooperate with the special counsel's probe.

By DARREN SAMUELSOHN
10/01/2018

Paul Manafort met Monday with special counsel Robert Mueller’s office as part of his cooperation agreement in the special counsel’s investigation into Russia interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The sit-down at the special counsel’s downtown Washington D.C. office stems from Manafort’s guilty plea last month, which requires the former Trump campaign chairman to cooperate “fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly…in any and all matters as to which the government deems the cooperation relevant.”

Take a Tour of Manafort’s Multimillion-Dollar Homes, Going Up for Sale
John Walsh
Oct 9, 2018

As part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors, Paul Manafort, President Trump’s disgraced campaign chairman, forfeited his New York homes worth about $22 million to the government.

An 1890s Brooklyn brownstone with gilded details. A Soho loft with picture windows. A Lower Manhattan apartment with an automated garage. A house in the Hamptons with a pool, tennis and basketball courts — even a chipping green.

When Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors last month, he agreed to forfeit New York real estate worth about $22 million to the government.

It’s a list of resplendent homes, some purchased with ill-gotten gains, prosecutors said.

Paul Manafort shows up to court in a wheelchair, learns sentencing date
Paul Manafort’s lawyer told the judge, "There are significant issues with Mr. Manafort’s health concerning confinement."
by Charlie Gile and Tom Winter / Oct. 20, 2018

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort was rolled into a Virginia federal court Friday in a wheelchair, wearing a green prison uniform instead of his signature tailored suit.

The judge scheduled Manafort to be sentenced Feb. 8 for eight counts of tax evasion and bank fraud and dismissed the remaining charges against him.

Manafort, appearing visibly grayer, was pushed into court in a wheelchair, missing his right shoe.

"There are significant issues with Mr. Manafort’s health concerning confinement," his lawyer, Kevin Downing, told the judge.

Downing requested that the court expedite Manafort’s sentencing so he could be moved to a facility better equipped to deal with his health issues.

Paul Manafort 'repeatedly and brazenly violated the law,' Mueller prosecutors tell judge
Rachel WeinerWashington Post

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort "repeatedly and brazenly violated the law" and shows a "hardened adherence to committing crimes," prosecutors told a Washington federal judge.

They recommended no specific punishment for those crimes, saying that is the practice of the special counsel. Prosecutors noted that federal guidelines call for a sentence of 17 to 22 years, although under Manafort's guilty plea in his Washington case, the statutory maximum he faces is 10. The special counsel said that they may ask for Judge Amy Berman Jackson to impose a sentence that runs consecutive to whatever punishment Manafort is given for related crimes in Virginia federal court.

Friday's sealed filing, an unredacted version of which was published Saturday, helps pave the way for his sentencings in Washington and Virginia scheduled for next month, as Robert Mueller begins wrapping up his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — The Latest on Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort (all times local):

6:59 p.m.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been sentenced to 47 months in prison for tax and bank fraud related to his work advising Ukrainian politicians.

Judge T.S. Ellis III imposed the sentence Thursday, capping the only jury trial following indictments stemming from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

A jury last year convicted Manafort on eight counts, concluding that he hid from the Internal Revenue Service millions of dollars he earned from his work in Ukraine.

Paul Manafort Will Spend Nearly Seven More Years In Prison
Last updated on March 13, 2019, at 1:09 p.m. ET
Posted on March 13, 2019, at 12:20 p.m. ET

Manafort was already sentenced to 47 months — minus time already served — in his case in Virginia. A judge in DC nearly doubled that time at a sentencing on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON – Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chair, will spend nearly seven more years in prison after a federal judge in Washington, DC, handed down his second sentence out of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced Manafort on Wednesday to spend 73 months in prison for conspiring to defraud the US government and tamper with witnesses, but a substantial part of that sentence will overlap with a sentence he previously received in Virginia.

Paul Manafort released to home confinement amid coronavirus threat in prison
By Catherine Herridge
May 13, 2020 / 2:49 PM / CBS News

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was transferred Wednesday to home confinement after he requested release because of the threat COVID-19 poses to his health, his lawyer, Kevin Downing, confirmed to CBS News.

CBS News was told that early Wednesday morning two family members including his wife picked up Manafort at FCI Loretto, the low-security federal prison in Pennsylvania where he has been serving his term.

In March 2019, Manafort was sentenced to a total of 90 months — or 7.5 years — in two separate cases involving tax and bank fraud and related charges.
