By Associated Press | FOX59 | Updated July 28, 2017

HOMECROFT, Ind.-- A Southport police officer died Thursday after being shot while responding to a crash.

The incident occurred just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday near Maynard Drive and Madison Avenue in Homecroft, a Perry Township town located approximately 8 miles south of Indianapolis.

Police say the deceased officer, identified as Southport Lieutenant Aaron Allan, and a Homecroft officer responded to the scene after reports of an inverted vehicle. That's when police say "shots were fired by one of the vehicle’s occupants, striking the Southport lieutenant."

IMPD said the 38-year-old lieutenant was shot multiple times. EMS arrived and transported him to the Eskenazi Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his wife and children.

During a press conference, Southport Police Chief Thomas Vaughn said Lt. Allan was a 6-year veteran with the department and he had nearly 20 years of law enforcement experience.

Police say the Homecroft officer and an off-duty Johnson County reserve deputy returned fire during the incident, striking one of the two occupants of the overturned car. The occupants were also transported to Eskenazi. One reportedly sustained injuries from an officer’s gunshot, while the other suffered injuries in the crash. Those injuries are believed to be non-life threatening, police say.

According to a police report, Jason Brown, 28, faces a preliminary charge of murder. The other occupant in the vehicle has not yet been identified.

Murder trial of ex-cop in St. Louis could draw national attention
By Joel Currier | St. Louis Post-Dispatch | July 31, 2017, 11:30AM

ST. LOUIS • The debate over police shootings of black men focuses on St. Louis this week as a former city police officer stands trial for the alleged premeditated murder of Anthony Lamar Smith nearly six years ago.

Jason Stockley, 36, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Dec. 20, 2011, shooting death of Smith following a police chase stemming from a suspected drug deal. Smith, who lived in the 4800 block of Page Boulevard, was 24 at the time and the father of a 1-year-old daughter.

The rarity of an ex-cop on trial for murder could draw national attention following recent acquittals elsewhere of white police officers charged with killing black men. Opening statements in Stockley’s two-week trial begin Tuesday in front of St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson, who will decide the case because Stockley waived his right to a jury trial.
[...]
Stockley and his partner, Officer Brian Bianchi, spotted Smith in a suspected drug transaction in a Church’s Chicken parking lot at Thekla Avenue and Riverview Boulevard about 12:30 p.m. Smith led the officers on a mile-long chase at speeds that reached at least 87 mph through city neighborhoods before ending with a crash.

Police dashboard recordings and two videos from the restaurant show the officers pulled behind Smith’s rented silver Buick. As they got out, Smith backed into the police SUV and sped from the lot past Stockley, nearly knocking an AK-47 rifle from his hands. The rifle was his own, which the department has said he was not authorized to carry on duty. Stockley fired several shots from his duty pistol before he and Bianchi chased Smith with two in-car cameras rolling.

Stockley reported shots being fired and shouted directions over the police radio. He also says something about shooting Smith, which court records reveal as “Going to kill this (expletive), don’t you know it.”

At West Florissant and Acme avenues, Stockley was recorded telling Bianchi to ram the back of Smith’s car, which Bianchi does, triggering the Buick’s airbags. Both officers got out; Stockley carried both his AK-47 and department handgun. Stockley fired several pistol shots into the car, then put his rifle back into the police SUV.

Sheriff's Press Conference 8/7/2017- Stolen Vehicle/Fatal Crash in Palm Harbor

Image

The teens stole two cars from a dealership and went for a "cat & mouse" ride early Sunday morning. Two in a Sebring and four in a 2015 Ford Explorer.

After running from the police and tailed by helicopter, the driver of the Ford turned off the head-lights and sped through an intersection on a red traffic light going 100mph. After hitting a car going through the intersection on a green light, the Ford went airborne, striking five cars on a lot and a large sign pole 10 feet up in the air.

Three died, the fourth teen in the car (14 y/o brother of the driver) went through the front windshield from the back seat and only suffered a concussion. None of the four were wearing seatbelts. The two in the Sebring fled the scene but are now in custody.

All six have been in a program where officials check on them once a day. It was ordered by the court they attend this program under strict supervision. The six have a total of 127 arrests among them.

They had all smoked marijuana one hour prior to the accident.

2 State Troopers shot in Pennsylvania, suspect killed
By FOX9.com | Updated: Aug 19 2017 08:29AM CDT

FAIRCHANCE, Pa. (AP) -- Authorities say two Pennsylvania state troopers have been shot and a suspect killed outside a small-town store, south of Pittsburgh.

State police say the troopers, both taken to hospitals after the Friday night shooting in Fairchance, were in stable condition. A state police spokeswoman didn't immediately return a call Saturday.

Police told news reporters Friday night that the encounter took place outside a Stop `n Save in Fairchance, a borough about 52 miles south of Pittsburgh. They say that as the officers approached the man, he pulled out a gun from a backpack and fired it. They confirmed the suspect was shot.

2 Jacksonville officers shot with high-powered rifle while responding to suicide call; suspect dead
By WFTV.com | Updated: Aug 19, 2017 - 9:49 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UPDATE: Saturday, 8:35 a.m.: The two wounded officers are recovering at UF Health. JSO says they are expected to survive.

UPDATE: Saturday, 7:30 a.m.: JSO has taken down the crime scene tape around the home. Crime scene techs have left the scene.

Two Jacksonville officers were shot with a high-powered rifle Friday night on the city's Westside while responding to an attempted suicide call.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said one officer is in critical condition and one officer is stable. The suspect was shot by police and later died at the hospital.

Police were dispatched to an attempted suicide call at 10:50 p.m. at a home in the 5100 block of Seaboard Avenue near Timuquana Road, JSO Director Mike Bruno said. Police were told that three people were hiding in the back room and the suspect had armed himself with with a high-powered rifle.

As the officers arrived, they could hear shots coming from the home. Four to five officers responded to the home and were attempting to make entry into the house as contact team, Bruno said. As the officers approached the house, the suspect began shooting through a door at the officers. The suspect then came through the door and advanced toward the officers, Bruno said.

The suspect and the officers exchanged gunfire. The suspect was hit with gunfire and stopped advancing toward the officers. One officer was shot in the hands and one officer was shot in the stomach, Bruno said.

Suspect in Kissimmee officer’s killing arrested, chief says
By WESH | Updated: 10:18 AM EDT Aug 19, 2017

EVERETT MILLER, Police Handout

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A Kissimmee police was shot and killed and another was gravely injured Friday night while checking on reports of suspicious people.

Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O'Dell said that Sgt. Sam Howard and officer Matthew Baxter were checking people in an area of Kissimmee known for drug activity when they were shot. They did not have an opportunity to return fire.

O'Dell said Baxter, a three-year veteran of the department, died later in a hospital and Howard, a 10-year-veteran, was gravely injured. O'Dell said there is not much chance that Howard will survive.

O’Dell said Everett Miller has been arrested and charged in the death of Baxter. He will be transferred to the Osceola County Jail Saturday in Baxter’s handcuffs, O’Dell said.

Miller was arrested around 11:30 p.m. at Roscoe's Bar on Orange Blossom Trail, in Kissimmee, police said. Police said no other arrests are expected.

Kissimmee police said it has been 25 years since an officer died in the line of duty. Sergeant Douglas Odell Parsons died on April 27, 1993 of a heart attack and Patrolman Thomas Alan Bartholomew was shot and killed July 18, 1983.

Judge shot, wounded near Ohio courthouse; gunman killed
By Associated Press | StarTribune.com | August 21, 2017

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — A judge walking from his car into the county courthouse was shot by a gunman Monday morning but managed to fire back before a probation officer stepped in and ultimately killed the suspect, authorities said.

Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. was shot at around 8 a.m. near the courthouse in Steubenville, just across the Ohio River from West Virginia's northern panhandle, roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Pittsburgh.

Courthouse video shows both the judge and the gunman firing about five times each, said Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla.
[...]
Bruzzese had likely arrived early to review his usual Monday morning batch of legal motions, Corabi said.

Local media reported that the suspect's body could be seen lying next to a car at the drive-thru of a neighboring bank. Police said a man who was in the car with him was taken into custody.

UPDATE
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — The Latest on the shooting of a judge outside an Ohio courthouse (all times local): 4:45 p.m.

A prosecutor says the man who shot and wounded an Ohio judge was the father of a Steubenville High School football player convicted of rape in 2013. Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin on Monday identified the shooter as Nathaniel Richmond, the father of Ma’Lik Richmond.

Ma’Lik Richmond served about 10 months in a juvenile lockup after being convicted with another Steubenville High School football player of raping a 16-year-old girl during an alcohol-fueled party in 2012.

Hanlin says authorities aren’t aware of a connection between the rape case and the shooting. A visiting judge from Hamilton County and not Bruzzese handled the vast majority of the Steubenville rape case.

Houston man charged with trying to plant bomb at Confederate statue in Hermann Park
By St. John Barned-Smith, et al | Houston Cronical | Updated 3:14PM, Monday, August 21, 2017

A Houston man has been charged with trying to plant explosives at the statue of Confederate officer Richard Dowling in Hermann Park, federal officials said Monday.

Andrew Schneck, 25, who was released from probation early last year after being convicted in 2015 of storing explosives, was charged in a criminal complaint filed in federal court, Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez said in a statement Monday.

Schneck was arrested Saturday night after a Houston park ranger spotted him kneeling in bushes in front of the Dowling monument in the park, Martinez said. When confronted Saturday night in the park, he tried to drink some of the liquid explosives but spit it out, officials said. The ranger then asked if he planned to harm the statute, and he said he did because he did not "like that guy," according to a sworn statement submitted in federal court by an FBI agent investigating the case.

Schneck was holding two small boxes that included a viable explosive, a timer, wires connected to a homemade detonator, a battery and an explosive compound, according to the statement. He told law enforcement he had other chemicals at his home on Albans Road near Rice University.
[...]
Federal agents have raided 2025 Albans before. In 2013, a multi-agency team stormed the home owned by Houston art community staple Cecily E. Horton, and her husband, Andrew Schneck. Agents also searched a Memorial-area homed then owned by the couple and a condo in Bryan.

Officials said at the time that the couple's 22-year-old Andrew Cecil Earhart Schneck was the focus of the law enforcement interest. A source initially said the raid was sparked by chemicals that could be used to make nerve gas or tear gas. After combing through all three scenes, the FBI found a military-grade explosive called picric acid at the Memorial area home on Fall River.

The following year, the younger Schneck was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty in federal court to knowingly storing explosives. In 2016, a judge released him from probation ahead of schedule.

This just pisses me off. Two and a half years later, a "slap on the wrist" sentence. She was facing sanctions for not producing evidence in a case, so she didn't want to go to court. She also sent the judge a false reason via letter for not being in court, after the fact.

Woman fined $20K for phony bomb threat to day care center
By Associate Press | August 20, 2917

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A lawyer must pay a $20,000 fine for making a bomb threat to a day care center at the federal courthouse in Syracuse.

Jacqueline Jones of Syracuse pleaded guilty Friday to misdemeanor false reporting of an incident. She admitted she called in a bomb threat to the day care center in February 2015 because she wanted to avoid a contentious court hearing.

Prosecutors say the threat caused fear and chaos in the day care, where there were 70 children.

Jones was sentenced to a year of probation and a $20,000 fine, but avoided jail time. Prosecutors had recommended six months in jail.

Suspects in custody in shooting of 2 St. Louis police officers and bystander
By Jesse Bogan | St. Louis Post-Dispatch | September 1, 2017,

Updated at 8:30 with arrests of two suspects. More details to come.

ST. LOUIS • By the time Mia Caddell arrived to the bloody scene at her home Friday afternoon, just north of downtown, two police officers had been shot in the street nearby.

The officers, a man and a woman, were attacked in the 800 block of Dickson Street and then drove themselves to near 14th Street and Cass Avenue, officials said. They were in stable condition at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

The officers, members of the gang squad, were "ambushed" by two people they recognized and wanted to question, said acting Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole. He said the two fired on the officers with an assault-style rifle and a handgun.

Police said Friday night that the two suspects are in custody without gunfire and the weapons recovered.

Not long after the shooting, Caddell discovered that her own daughter was also a victim of the volley of gunfire.

Caddell was at the store when she saw police in the neighborhood where she has lived for 20 years. She came home in the 1400 block of North 9th Street to find her baby granddaughter covered in blood, and her daughter lying in a pool of blood near the back door. She could hear her daughter moaning.

She said her daughter, Tamara Collier, 24, was shot through the neck as she did laundry inside Caddell's house. The stray bullet entered through the home's back door. Collier's 1-year-old daughter was there but was uninjured, according to Caddell, 52. Collier also has a 5-year-old son who was not in the home at the time.

SACRAMENTO (KRON) — Two Sacramento police officers have been shot Thursday morning.

According to the Sacramento Police Department’s Twitter page, the officers have non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect, who was wanted in a double-homicide, was killed in a shootout with police.

The shootout came as hundreds of law enforcement officers were in nearby Roseville for the memorial service for Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert French, who was killed in a shootout last week in which the suspect also died.

VSP trooper shot during pursuit in Henrico; woman in custody
By Roxie Bustamante | WRIC.com | Updated: September 20, 2017

HENRICO Co., Va. (WRIC) — A Virginia State Police trooper is recovering at the hospital after being shot Tuesday night during a pursuit.

The pursuit suspect, Karisa Shyanne Daniels, 23, of Durham, N.C., is charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Additional charges are pending.

Authorities say that at 11:35 p.m., Senior Trooper C.A. Putnam initiated a traffic stop on a Toyota Corolla traveling north on Chippenham Parkway for speeding. When the trooper activated his emergency lights, the Toyota pulled over. But as the trooper approached the Toyota, it sped away and a pursuit began.

The pursuit continued north on Chippenham Parkway and then onto Parham Road, state police said. The Toyota then turned onto September Drive and into a neighborhood. When the Toyota encountered a dead end, it began to turn around in the cul-de-sac in Lakeway Court. The trooper pulled his patrol car in front of the Toyota to stop it.

According to state police, the Toyota did stop and the driver, Karisa Daniels, got out on foot. As Trooper Putnam approached Daniels, she shot at him, striking him in the arm, state police said. She then ran on foot through the backyard of a nearby residence.

27 years later, arrest is made in killer-clown case
By Terry Spencer | Associated Press | September 28, 2017

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — On a May morning in 1990, Marlene Warren answered her front door in an upscale Florida suburb to find a clown in an orange wig, red nose and white face paint, handing her carnations and foil balloons.
“How pretty!” she exclaimed.

The clown then pulled a gun, shot Warren in the face and drove away. She died two days later.

Now, almost three decades later, authorities say they have arrested the clown: a woman who, years after the killing, married Warren’s husband.

Detectives said advances in DNA technology, combined with evidence gathered decades ago, show Sheila Keen Warren, now 54, was the killer.

Suspects in $8,000 Victoria's Secret shoplifting case flee police until car catches fire on I-64
By Erin Heffernan St. Louis Post-Dispatch 1 hr ago

FRONTENAC - A police pursuit of suspected shoplifters ended in a vehicle catching fire on Highway 40 (Interstate 64) Wednesday afternoon.

The chase began about 12:30 p.m. at The Meadows shopping center off Highway 40 in Lake Saint Louis, police said.

Three females were reported taking about $8,000 worth of merchandise without paying from the Victoria's Secret store before driving away in a 2007 maroon Nissan Altima, according to Lake Saint Louis police.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle as it continued east on Highway 40, police said.

The car struck a curb causing its tire to deflate, but the driver continued to flee, said Lake Saint Louis police Chief Chris DiGiuseppi.

At about 12:45 p.m., Frontenac police took up the pursuit near Spoede Road.

By that time, the vehicle had two flat tires and came to a stop on its own before bursting into flames, said Frontenac Det. Tim Duda.

The fire was likely due to the heat and sparks from riding on the tire rims, police said.

The suspects briefly tried to run away, but were arrested by Frontenac police. No one was injured.

Multiple lanes of traffic on eastbound Highway 40 were closed, but the Missouri Department of Transportation reported the road was cleared by 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Three women charged in Victoria's Secret shoplifting case that ended with burning car
By Staff | St. Louis Post-Dispatch | October 13, 2017

ST. CHARLES COUNTY  • Prosecutors have filed charges against three women who allegedly stole clothes from Victoria's Secret, then led police on a chase before their car caught fire.

Brittany R. Bobo, 24, Shomyia Hemphill, 28, and Lamonica McGee, 23, were jailed Friday morning in St. Charles County, facing felony stealing charges. Hemphill faces an additional charge of resisting arrest, also a felony. Bail is set at $10,000 each.

Police said the women swiped about $7,458 worth of merchandise without paying Wednesday afternoon at the Victoria's Secret store in The Meadows shopping center in Lake Saint Louis.

Police say the women had entered Victoria's Secret, walked to the front displays and began stacking clothing that had been spread out on display tables. Once all three women made numerous stacks, police say, they bent down and scooped up the clothing and ran out.
