Catapult System Used to Launch Drugs Over US-Mexico Border Fence in Arizona: U.S. Border Patrol
By Monica Garske | NBC San Diego | February 15, 2017

Image

Drug smuggling attempts by car across the U.S.-Mexico border are a frequent occurrence but, in Arizona, smugglers got extra creative, using a catapult system to launch bundles of drugs across a fence.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials, on Feb. 10 Border Patrol agents in Douglas, Arizona, were patrolling an area east of the Douglas Port of Entry when they noticed some suspicious activity near a fence that separates Mexico from the U.S.

As agents approached the area, several people scurried off. Upon looking more closely at the fence, agents discovered a catapult system rigged onto the south side of the border fence.

A search of the area unveiled that two bundles of marijuana, weighing a combined 47 pounds, had been launched from the catapult from Mexico into the U.S.

Lawyer: Waitress showered in cash after ‘don’t tip black people’ story a fraud
By Douglas Ernst | The Washington Times | February 27, 2017

A Virginia woman who pocketed thousands of dollars in donations after allegedly encountering a racist customer is now accused of fabricating the whole ordeal.

Kelly Carter of Anita’s New Mexico Style Café made headlines in January when a racist receipt saying “great service don’t tip Black people” was shown to local reporters. The news prompted customers to stop by the Loudoun County restaurant with cash, and a crowdfunding website raised over $3,600. A lawyer for the customer now says that his client’s reputation has been unjustly smeared and wants the restaurant to correct the record.

I don't know about these arrests. Something doesn't add up for me. Not seeing this as criminal news, the fire and collapse of the overpass is news on its own. ;)

Three Arrested in Connection to Atlanta Bridge Fire, Collapse
By Holly Ford | NBCDFW.com | March 31, 2017

The state fire marshal has confirmed that three people have been arrested in connection to a massive fire caused an interstate bridge to collapse during rush hour Thursday in Atlanta, just minutes after witnesses said police halted traffic and turned cars away from the crumbling overpass.
[...]
Officials still don't know exactly what materials fueled the intense blaze. But, investigators that the three people arrested are connected to the fire, according to WXIA, the NBC affliliate in Atlanta.

Gov. Nathan Deal told reporters that some PVC plastic materials in a vehicle may have caught fire. "I do not know why they did or what the source of their transport was," Deal said. "But those are questions that will hopefully be answered at least by tomorrow morning."

Deal added that "to my knowledge we have not had any injuries as a result of this fire on the bridge."

Viewership of 'O'Reilly Factor' drops without Bill O'Reilly
By David Bauder | AP | April 18, 2017, 12:52PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) — Through three days of Bill O'Reilly's vacation, his show's viewership declined by 26 percent in the hands of substitutes Dana Perino, Eric Bolling and Greg Gutfeld.

O'Reilly is on a nearly two-week vacation at the same time Fox News Channel's parent company looks into a woman's accusation that her career was slowed when she spurned his advances. Dozens of his show's advertisers have fled following reports of harassment settlements paid to other women. O'Reilly has denied any wrongdoing.

Nielsen company figures show that so far, viewers aren't as interested in "The O'Reilly Factor" without O'Reilly. Bolling did the best, with his 3.11 million viewership down 16 percent from O'Reilly's performance a week earlier. The 2.32 million who watched Gutfeld on Friday was down 39 percent from the previous Friday.

Authorities Search for Arsonist as Firefighters Battle 3 Blazes in San Bernardino Mountains; Highways Closed
By Erika Martin | KTLA.com | May 2, 2017, 1:49AM ET

Officials were attempting to locate an arsonist Monday after several small fires were set in the Crestline area.

Crews were working to extinguish a group of three blazes first reported just before 9 p.m. The fires ranged between a half-acre and three acres in size, according to updates posted on the San Bernardino National Forest’s Twitter account.

Highways 18 and 138 were both closed as a result, San Bernardino Sheriff’s Lt. Sarkis Ohannessian tweeted.
[...]
The arson suspect, however, remained at large. He was somewhere on the mountain and considered armed and dangerous, Ohannessian said.

Man killed by Plano officer had felony convictions, deported twice
By Hannah Davis | WFAA | 8:55 PM CDT June 15, 2017

PLANO, TEXAS - Eleuterio Torres-Amaya was not supposed to be in Plano Monday afternoon when an officer shot and killed him at a busy Quik Trip parking lot.

The 63-year-old wasn't even supposed to be in the United States. WFAA has learned Amaya had a lengthy criminal history and had been deported from the U.S. twice in 2002 and 2007.

Documents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement show Amaya first came to the United States illegally in the 1970s but was admitted as a U.S. resident in 1983. In the 1990s, Amaya was convicted of two DWIs in Texas and was convicted of a felony count of "alien smuggling." He was also arrested for assault in Dallas County, but those charges were dropped.

Because of those convictions, a judge revoked Amaya's "permanent resident status" in 2002, and he was deported back to Mexico. At some point, Amaya returned to the United States and was deported again in 2007.

Authorities have not said when Amaya returned to the United States, but he was in Plano on June 12 when he was shot and killed by a Plano police officer.

Witnesses say Amaya was in the backseat of a woman's car and was holding her at gunpoint. That woman crashed her car and ran towards a police officer to get away from Amaya. Witnesses say he then shot towards the officer and woman and was shot and killed by police.

Bay area leaders strive to protect speech, prevent violence
By Paul Elias, Janie Har | Associated Press | August 24, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Police and civic leaders in the cradle of America’s free speech movement will struggle to balance liberty of expression with safeguards against violence as demonstrators with varying political viewpoints travel to the San Francisco Bay Area for dueling rallies throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, a politically conservative group called Patriot Prayer will host a “freedom rally” near the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, over the vociferous objections of San Francisco’s Mayor Ed Lee and other Democratic leaders who say the group invites hate. On Sunday, a transsexual supporter of President Donald Trump plans a “No to Marxism in America” event in a downtown city park in nearby Berkeley.

Opponents will mobilize too, including clowns and drag queens as well as an anti-Trump organization that has sometimes supported violent tactics.

Suspect in ‘active shooter’ incident at Columbus Scioto 6-12 identified
By Beth Burger, Earl Rinehart | The Dispatch | Updated: September 8, 2017, 5:38PM

Columbus police have identified the gunman at Columbus Scioto 6-12 Friday morning as a student at the school.

Adan Abdullahi, 18, a student at the school, faces charges of improperly discharging a firearm in a school safety zone which is a second-degree felony. It’s possible more charges could be added, according to officials.

A school for special needs and emotionally disturbed children, Columbus Scioto was evacuated as scores of law enforcement officers and Fire Division medics responded shortly after 8:30 a.m. Friday to a report of a gunman firing multiple shots in the hallway at the school at 2951 S. High St. Even the police mounted patrol arrived.

“One of the staff members did make contact with the armed suspect and was able to talk to that suspect and get him to calm down. Our officers arrived and were able to take him into custody,” said Columbus police Chief Kim Jacobs.

No one was injured and officers had the suspect in custody by 8:58 a.m., according to police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis. Police confiscated a gun and were investigating exactly how many shots were fired. Shell casings were found inside.
[...]
Abdullahi had a prior arrest for assault in February. He had gang material on his personal Facebook page but the incident was not gang motivated, police said. It’s unclear what motivated the shooting.
