"Space Waltz" was a NZ group that had minor success... popped up on a TV talent show... early 70's
I went to school with lead singer Alister Riddel and I vaguely knew him and other guys in the band.. :cool

Space Waltz 'Out On The Street.'

I see a little mini-doco clip as the band reformed.....

Copyright trial over Led Zeppelin's iconic 'Stairway to Heaven' begins in downtown L.A.
By Joel Rubin, Randy Lewis | Los Angeles Times | June 14, 2016

The legal battle over one of rock music’s most monumental ballads got underway Tuesday as the famous opening guitar riff from Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” filled a downtown courtroom and members of the iconic band looked to defend themselves against allegations they lifted the music from another group.

In their opening statements, attorneys for the two sides offered jurors sharply different views of the 1971 hit that helped catapult Led Zeppelin into rock stardom.

Francis Malofiy, the lawyer representing the estate of singer Randy Wolfe, claimed the opening of “Stairway” closely mimics parts of “Taurus,” a song Wolfe wrote and played with his band Spirit. Experts, Malofiy said, would show how the musical structure of “Stairway” mirrors a unique construction used in “Taurus.”

“This case can be summed up in six words: Give credit where credit is due,” Malofiy told jurors.

But an attorney for Zeppelin’s front man, Robert Plant, and lead guitarist, Jimmy Page, said any similarities were because the two songs both relied on “basic musical devices that are completely commonplace” and found in songs dating back centuries.
He also challenged Malofiy’s claim that Page and Plant heard Spirit perform their song when the two bands shared the bill at several music festivals.

Page and Plant both sat with solemn expressions and their long hair pulled back in ponytails.

During breaks, the rock stars were escorted from the courtroom and ushered down a side exit by private security who kept inquisitive journalists and fans seeking handshakes at bay.
[...]
For his first witnesses, Malofiy called Wolfe’s sister and a former band mate in an attempt to prove that Wolfe wrote “Taurus” in 1966, a year before he signed a contract with a music company. The timing is important, because Zeppelin’s legal team plans to argue the rights of “Taurus” belong to the music company, not Wolfe’s estate.

Led Zeppelin did not copy 'Stairway to Heaven' intro, jury finds

By Megan Thomas | CNN Money | June 23, 2016, 2:21PM

Music history will not be rewritten. A jury found Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page not guilty of copyright infringement on perhaps their most famous song, "Stairway to Heaven."

A Los Angeles jury deliberated for about five hours before deciding the band did not steal its most famous licks from another band.

In a statement issued after the verdict was announced, Led Zeppelin said they were "grateful" that the jury "ruled in our favor, putting to rest questions about the origins of 'Stairway to Heaven' and confirming what we have known for 45 years."

Thanks! Amazing story and doco. I did not know he was part of the Traveling Wilburys ... if you had me name the members, I would have left him out. What talent he has and so humble. Poor Joe Walsh. I don't think he was all there when this was made.

The Exponents - Career Overview (2000 rare!!)

Published on Jul 9, 2012
Here's a 10-minute clip celebrating the career of one of NZ's most enduring bands The Exponents. Originally called the Dance exponents and discovered then signed in 1982 by NZ music industry legend Mike Chunn (seen interviewed here), the band's popularity reached its zenith in the Eighties. Enigmatic singer Jordan Luck, appearing somewhat worse-for-wear in this interview, is rightly considered a formidable songwriter and remains one of NZ's most recognisable rock icons fronting the unique Kiwi phenomenon known as the The Exponents....

Molly Meldrum

I recently watched a Doco about Ian "Molly" Meldrum. A name I didnt know much about, but apparently well known character in Australian (and international) music circles.

A Music journalist (print and TV show host), entrepreneur, record producer etc Responsible for bringing forth and encouraging new talent.

Molly Meldrum
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molly_Meldrum

One of his "achievements" being that he produced the song "The Real Thing" by Russel Morris.. a song and and artist I was a fan of at the time... I have the (vinyl) album to prove it.

Molly was responsible for extending the song to nearly 7 mins... despite objections from know-it-alls in the music business... and a reluctance by radio stations to play the song... it became a huge hit

The Real Thing - Russell Morris

The Real Thing was added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry in 2013.

Ray Columbus (and The Invaders)

Ray Columbus, aged 74 died late last year :(

From Wikepedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Colum ... iscography

Quote:
History
Influenced by the early 1960s work of Cliff Richard and The Beatles, Ray Columbus & the Invaders had a #1 hit in Australia [1] and New Zealand with "She's a Mod" in 1964, a cover version of a song by The Senators. Ray Columbus and the Invaders were included in a package tour "Big Beat '65" with Roy Orbison, The Rolling Stones and The Newbeats that toured New Zealand and Australia. During the tour, the Invaders performed as Orbison's backing band as well as performing as Ray Columbus and the Invaders.

They had several more hits in New Zealand before disbanding in late 1965. Leader Ray Columbus later moved to the US where he founded a California psychedelic band, Newcastle Five, which he renamed as The Art Collection. As a band, Ray Columbus and The Art Collection released four singles for the Colstar label, including the psychedelic rocker "Kick It", before The Art Collection split with Columbus. During his time in California (1966–68), Columbus was offered an audition with The Monkees but turned it down. He also turned down the chance to play with David Crosby or Gene Clark after these musicians left The Byrds. Columbus went on to become a band manager.

Billy Kristian played bass guitar for the Invaders; he later joined the Keil Isles, The Jimmy Sloggett Band, Headband and Night and produced Herbs' first full album Long Ago.

Columbus died in November 2016 after four years of ill health.

Ray Columbus and the Invaders were the NZ Herald Legacy Award recipients at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards 2009.

In honour of their induction into the NZ Music Hall of Fame, The Mint Chicks performed "She's a Mod" live at the event. Satellite Media captured the performance for the live aspect of the music video and shot the intimate behind the scenes footage with The Mint Chicks on show day.

All proceeds from the sale of the single go to the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, a charitable organisation that helps special needs children communicate through music.

I never watched RARE COMEDY SKETCH.
Don't know what I was doing May 19 but completely missed it.
Hilarious!!! I bet it was crazy doing it with all those musicians together.

The Beatles Stories are good.
Have watched a few and actually saw this one in my recommendations this morning, but didn't click on it.
THIS is very interesting, glad I watched. :)
