Philip Chism, charged with killing teacher, faces separate attempted murder charge
By Rande Iaboni | CNN | Updated July 24, 2014

Philip Chism, a 15-year-old Massachusetts boy accused of raping and killing his math teacher in a high school bathroom, was arraigned Wednesday on attempted murder charges stemming from a separate attack on a female youth services clinician.

Prosecutors laid out a narrative of what they said was "the defendant's intent to murder" a female employee last month at the Dorchester Department of Youth Services facility where Chism is being held pending trial, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said.

Assistant District Attorney Mark Zanini said that on June 2, Chism was in the facility's main room, which is bordered by a low wall. A staff member was seated at a station behind the wall, able to look down into the room. Behind the staffer was a hallway used by staff.

Zanini said Chism had refused to attend classes while in custody. Instead, Chism was instructed to sit and study at a table in the open room. Despite a rule that he sit at the table closest to his room, Chism allegedly sat at a table that provided him a view of the hallway behind the staffer, the statement said.

At some point, the 29-year-old female victim, whom Chism had known for several months, walked down the hallway and entered a bathroom inside a staff locker room, according to the statement.

Chism was "confident the other staffer was distracted" and kicked off his sandals, which would have made noise on the floor, before moving toward the hallway in a crouch that kept him out of the staffer's view, Zanini said at the arraignment.

Chism had a pencil in his hand and opened the door to the locker room, according to the statement.

When the female clinician came out of the bathroom, Chism stared at her from about a foot away. He placed both his hands around her neck and began to choke her while pushing her back against the cinder block wall in the bathroom, according to the statement.

The victim was unable to scream because Chism's hands tightly gripped her throat, Zanini said.

When she managed to get his right hand away from her neck, Chism punched her in the face, head and jaw, prosecutors said. She screamed as other staffers rushed to help her and restrain him, Zanini told the court.

The victim suffered bruises to her face, jaw and head, along with a scratch on her back consistent with a tear in her shirt that appeared to be from the pencil Chism carried, according to the statement.

Chism was charged with attempted murder by strangulation, assault with intent to murder, kidnapping and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon: a pencil and the cinder block wall.

Chism's attorney, Denise Regan, declined to comment.

What a POS... the Jurors for the Colleen Ritzer case should be PISSED if/when they find out about this repeat crime... unless they convict him for EVERY lead count :eek

Defense attorney Denise Regan says she has no comment. She will be in Suffolk Juvenile Court Wednesday for #PhilipChism's case there.

I tried, but this is not a good time to google "Philip Chism" for this particular court date. Will do first thing in the AM. :)

The Latest: Teacher killer to have hearing in separate case
Dec. 15, 2015 8:06 PM EST

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — The latest on the trial of a Massachusetts teenager charged with raping and killing his high school math teacher (all times local):

8:05 p.m.
Lawyers for a Massachusetts teenager who killed his math teacher in 2013 are due back in court on separate charges a day after he was convicted of rape and murder.

Sixteen-year-old Philip Chism faces charges including attempted murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon stemming from an attack on a state Department of Youth Services worker while awaiting trial for killing Danvers High School teacher Colleen Ritzer.

A spokesman for Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley says lawyers for Chism will be in Suffolk County Juvenile Court in Boston on Wednesday.

Chism had been in a youth detention facility in Boston in June 2014 when prosecutors said he followed a worker into a locker room and choked and beat her before other workers intervened. The worker suffered injuries to her face, jaw, neck and back.

Juvenile court cases are typically closed, but because Chism is being charged as a youthful offender, the case will be open to the public. It's not clear if Chism will attend.

Wednesday's hearing is just a status hearing. Case has been on hold pending the Ritzer trial

Old article, but getting up to speed on Chism II............

Prosecutors Detail Second Attack Involving Teen Charged In Danvers Teacher Murder
July 23, 2014 11:15 PM

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — A Massachusetts teenager charged with killing his teacher last year after following her into a bathroom similarly followed a worker at a youth detention facility into a locker room last month before choking and beating her, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Philip Chism, 15, made sure he wasn’t being watched, took off his footwear to muffle his footsteps, then crouched down as he made his way along a corridor before following the 29-year-old woman into the locker room at Metro Youth Services facility in Boston on June 2, prosecutor Mark Zanini told a judge in Boston Juvenile Court.

Chism, with a pencil in his hand, pushed the woman against the wall in the bathroom, choked her, and then hit her in the head with his fists, he said.

“The victim was trying to scream but it was ineffective because her airway was closed by virtue of the defendant’s strangling her,” Zanini said.

After getting Chism’s hand off her neck, she screamed and other facility workers pulled Chism away from her, Zanini said.

She suffered injuries to her face, jaw, neck and back, and got a hole in the back of her shirt that was the same size as a pencil, which was found on the floor, Zanini said.

Second Chism case gets two-month continuance
Laurel J. Sweet Wednesday, December 16, 2015

Philip Chism's defense team has until Feb. 11 to decide whether to go to trial or attempt to work out another resolution for the newly convicted murderer and rapist on separate charges that he tried to kill a female youth worker employed by the Department of Youth Services.

At a status hearing this morning before Suffolk Juvenile Court First Justice Terry M. Craven that lasted only a few seconds, the teen's attorney John Osler and assistant Suffolk District Attorney Mark Zanini agreed to a two-month continuance as Chism waived his appearance both for today and February, as well as his right to a speedy trial.

When the two sides next meet in court, Zanini will be expected to report to Craven whether the prosecution has met its discovery obligations and the defense can elect to set a trial date.

Chism, indicted in Juvenile Court as a youthful offender, faces charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, kidnapping and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

It seems that Judge has OK'd cameras for future hearings...be good if some news agency gets off their ass and provides the stream. Might be an idea if they keep the stream going for a change and DO NOT piss about cutting to local news or just plain not bothering to switch the camera on :cool

I hope the media do report on this case, even after the hysteria of his first trial subsides.

I can't find any report of what happened at the hearing set for 11th February?

Hi Rumpole. :28

I search for this case a couple of times a week and you are correct, there is nothing! (Well, there is an absolutely-ridiculous article at huff post about how juveniles should not be tried as adults, citing his murder trial.)

I'm thinking this attempted murder case will start back up after he is sentenced for the murder conviction.

GMTA, sure .. I just looked up the county of offense. :) I've been looking (today) by searching specific websites that covered the initial report in June 14, 2014. What I am finding, is many haven't even updated his murder conviction sentencing from the end of January to Feb 26th. :doh

WCVB who had the latest, announcing Feb 11 hearing, doesn't have search capabilities.

I've hit a wall, Rumpole. :wall

Since Chism's attempted murder (and additional) charges are in the Suffolk County Juvenile Court, there are no search fields for juvenile court, records are closed to public. I found an article stating such, but it said that the court hearings are "open" due to him being charged as an adult in the other case. :40

I'll keep looking and calling.

Several people in Cathy's chat said this trial is scheduled sometime in March, but I think they were parroting what others had said, all hearsay.

Even a chatter, who was in the Chism courtroom today, her last definitive news she could give me is the December 15, 2015 article that we have. Just so you know, Rumpole, to find the current status of this case has become a challenge. I may need a raise. :cool
