Negative tweet about Dep. Darren Goforth's ambush killing ends in arrest for college student

Monica Foy, a Sam Houston State University student, has come under fire for a tweet she sent out in the wake of the shooting death of Harris County deputy Darren Goforth.

Goforth was killed Friday in an apparent ambush shooting while he pumped gas. Shannon Miles, the man accused in the shooting, reportedly had spent an unknown amount of time under psychiatric care prior to the shooting.

Foy’s tweet on Tuesday questioned why so many people cared about Goforth’s death and suggested that he might have deserved to be shot. She also wrote that Goforth had “creepy perv eyes.”

Once social media got wind of the tweet it went viral and Foy soon deleted the tweet. The most recent tweet on her feed came Tuesday morning and simply said “#blacklivesmatter.” Her entire account has now since been deleted.

Late Tuesday night her Twitter mentions were full of angry messages regarding her tweet.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Brady Fitzgerald confirmed on Wednesday that they received a call stating that Foy had an outstanding warrant for assault causing bodily harm out of Harris County.

She was arrested at her home in the county after deputies checked the system.

After Foy was taken into custody she bonded out a short time later, Fitzgerald added. The charge is likely a misdemeanor A.

This officer met Deputy Goforth in elementary school and were friends for 32 years. Told many personal stories and spoke for Mrs. Goforth and the two children. A heartfelt presentation, with humor and much sadness when he described what kind of man Deputy Goforth was, speaking for Mrs. Goforth.

In the end, he said that Mrs. Goforth had purchased matching Captain America tee-shirts for her husband and son. They never had the chance to wear them together. The son is wearing his at the service and Deputy Goforth is wearing his under his uniform.

There will be many photos on websites, especially the one listed above. I've been to many LE funerals/memorials in my lifetime, but I have never seen anything like this - EVER!

Blue Army of Thousands March in Texas — #PoliceLivesMatter
by Bob Price, 12 Sep 2015

Image

HOUSTON, Texas – A thin blue line of police supporters stretched for over a mile along a Texas highway on Saturday as over 8,000 Texans took to the streets. The marchers gathered in the #PoliceLivesMatter parade in memory of murdered Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth and in support of all police.

Sherrod said the idea for the march began when he and a few friends were discussing a way to make a statement after the murder of Deputy Goforth. “We planned on getting a few hundred people to march down Allen Parkway to City Hall,” Sherrod explained.

“The next thing we knew,” he said, “thousands were posting on Facebook that they wanted to join in. We decided to get a bigger venue and moved the march to this highway.” The large group of supporters marched along a 4.5 mile section of the Sam Houston Parkway. Police closed off the feeder roads to make room for the marchers and to ensure safety.

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) -- A new tribute to honor Deputy Darren Goforth, who was killed in the line of duty, passed Tuesday after a vote by Harris County commissioners.

Commissioners voted to rename Horsepen Creek Park off West Road in honor of Deputy Goforth. Goforth was murdered last month while fueling his patrol car at the Chevron gas station on West and Telge.

JUDGE IN CASE OF MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING DEP. DARREN GOFORTH RECUSES HERSELF
By Kevin Quinn | ABC13.com | October 19, 2015 08:36PM

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The murder case against the man accused in the ambush-style killing of a Harris County Sheriff's deputy has been moved to another court.

Judge Denise Collins, who was presiding in the case against suspect Shannon Miles, has recused herself. Miles is accused of fatally shooting Deputy Darren Goforth on August 28.

This is a voluntary recusal filed by Collins. Our legal experts say as such she does not, under the law, have to explain why she has done so. In the recusal, Collins says she does so to "...preserve the interests of justice" and to "...avoid any possible conceivable question of propriety." She does not go into specifics. When asked Monday afternoon, Collins told us, "I wish I were able to discuss the matter but unfortunately I am unable to, as i am not allowed to talk about any pending criminal case no matter where it is assigned."

[...]
Court documents indicate investigators later discovered one of the eyewitnesses to the murder was a woman who said she had an ongoing romantic relationship with the married deputy. She's considered a key witness in this case. Then Eyewitness News broke the story about one of the detectives working this case being relieved of duty after admitting to sexual contact with that same woman. Investigator Craig Clopton said in court records that his sexual contact with the woman took place during the ongoing criminal investigation.

Texas man ruled incompetent to stand trial in deputy's death
By Steve Almasy and Faith Karimi, CNN

A Texas man who had been charged in connection with the shooting death of a deputy is not competent to stand trial, a judge in Harris County ruled Tuesday.

Shannon J. Miles, 30, faced one count of capital murder of a police officer or fire fighter for the killing of Deputy Darren H. Goforth.

Goforth died August 28 when a gunman came up behind him at a gas station and shot him in the back.

When he fell, the shooter stood over him and fired more shots, authorities said. Goforth, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was shot 15 times, authorities said.

Goforth was in his Harris County Sheriff's Office uniform at the time of the shooting, which officials described as an "execution-style" attack.

Defense medical experts and a Harris County doctor made recommendations to Harris County Judge Susan Brown that Miles was not competent at this time.

He will go to a state mental hospital for at least 120 days.

Harris County prosecutor Marcy McCorvey said Tuesday's ruling doesn't rule out a trial in the future.

:Q44 If I feel the way I do about this ruling, I can only imagine how Goforth's family, friends and the Sheriff's Office is taking it! :59

Quote:
This is the second time Miles has been ruled incompetent. In 2012, Miles also was found mentally incompetent to stand trial on a separate felony assault charge, a prosecutor said in September.

At the time, he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after fighting a man at an Austin homeless shelter over the TV remote control, said Joe Frederick, a prosecutor in Travis County.

Suspect in Goforth slaying to wait 3 months before mental hospital transfer
By Brian Rogers | Chron.com | March 7, 2016

Image

Shannon Miles, the man accused of gunning down a Harris County deputy, will remain in jail at least three more months before he is sent to a state mental hospital, a judge ruled Monday.

State District Judge Susan Brown's decision to keep Miles in line behind at least 60 other inmates in the Harris County lock-up was met with chagrin by state Sen. John Whitmire.

"This is a sick man," Whitmire said after a brief hearing, for which he was subpoenaed but did not testify. He said defense lawyers for Miles were stalling to keep the 31-year-old from going to trial on capital murder charges.

Attorneys for Miles filed a motion last week to keep Whitmire from trying to get the accused man to a state hospital before the dozens of Harris County jail inmates in line ahead of him.
