Officer killed in ambush at NW Harris gas station

Houston Chronicle | August 28, 2015, 11:40PM
By Mike Glenn and St. John Barned-Smith

A Harris County Sheriff’s deputy was ambushed and killed while gassing his cruiser Friday night at a northwest Harris County service station.

A sheriff’s office spokesman said the officer had traveled to a Chevron station at Telge and West, after earlier responding to a routine car accident.

“He was pumping into his vehicle … and the male suspect came up behind him and shot the deputy multiple times,” said Dep. Thomas Gilliland.

Even after the deputy fell to the ground, the man continued firing shot after shot into his body before fleeing in a red or maroon Ford Ranger. “The deputy fell to ground… the suspect came over and shot the deputy again multiple times as he lay on the ground.”

A witness called 911 and told dispatchers what had happened, bringing deputies racing to the site of the shooting.

"EMS arrived on scene," said Gilliland, his voice catching slightly. “Unfortunately, the deputy passed.”

Texas County Sheriff Assassinated – Black Male Suspect Ambushed and Shot Officer In Back Of Head….
Posted on August 29, 2015 by sundance

Deputy Darren Goforth
Image
A Harris County Deputy was assassinated last night while putting gas in his patrol vehicle. A black male suspect approximately 5’11”, 20 to 25-years-old, approached the officer and fired a single shot in the back of his head. The suspect then stood above the officer and shot 3 more bullets into his back.

This follows a call last week by radical texas-based black activist groups to begin assassinating police officers. Breitbart Media released the details of the activist group along with the names of their leadership. HERE

The Texas group goes under the auspices of F**kYourFlag, or FYG, [Twitter CoHort] and holds the same ideological viewpoints as “Black Lives Matter”, and Valdosta State University activist Eric Sheppard Jr. – who also called for the assassination of police officers.

The deputy was identified as Darren Goforth, 47. He was a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, assigned to the west district patrol. He leaves behind a wife and two children. Deputy Goforth was pumping gas at the service station on Telge and West when someone walked up and shot him repeatedly.

HOUSTON (KTRK/KPRC/CNN/RNN) - According to the Associated Press, a suspect has been arrested in the killing of a Texas deputy at a Houston-area gas station.

The arrest came just more than an hour after Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman had made a plea to the public to come forward with information and assist in finding the person responsible.

Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was identified as the victim. He was a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office and a married father of two.

Goforth was shot from behind as he was filling up his patrol car in an execution-style killing. The incident was caught on surveillance video.

"A witness called 911 to let us know one of our deputies had been shot, multiple units arrived, EMS arrived on scene. Unfortunately the deputy passed," said Deputy Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Alleged Texas Cop Killer Charged: Linked to University Attended by Sandra Bland
by Bob Price and Lana Shadwick29 Aug 2015

Image

HOUSTON, Texas – Authorities in Harris County have identified the alleged killer of a Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy as Shannon Juruary Miles, 31. Breitbart Texas has learned that Miles has an extensive history with law enforcement in Harris County.

Miles is the registered owner of the 2002 red Ford Ranger that law enforcement appeared to search on Friday night outside the home where Miles lives. The Ford was being sought after police obtained security video from the gas station where Deputy Darren Goforth was killed. They also had a description of the vehicle from witnesses.

Miles is being charged with capital murder involving the killing of a police officer.

Breitbart Texas has learned that Miles attended Prairie View A&M University, according to what appears to be his Facebook page. This is the school where Sandra Bland was arrested following a traffic stop and alleged assault on a police officer in July. Three days later Bland killed herself in the Waller County jail and became a prominent icon in the #BlackLivesMatter movement. It appears he attended the predominantly black university for one year from August, 2004 to May, 2004. Following that he attended other colleges including Houston Community College and the University of Houston Hilton College.

Shannon Miles in Court: Prosecutors Say Texas Deputy Darren Goforth Was Shot 15 Times

NBC News
By Erin McClam | August 31, 2015, 2:31PM

The Texas sheriff's deputy who was killed at a gas station was shot 15 times by a gunman who unloaded his entire clip, a prosecutor said Monday as the suspect appeared in court for the first time.

A judge found probable cause to hold the suspect, Shannon Miles, for capital murder in the killing of Deputy Darren Goforth in Houston. Miles, 30, wore a yellow jump suit and shackles. He did not enter a plea.

Goforth had just finished filling up his cruiser on Friday night when he was shot in the back of the head. The gunman then stood over him and kept firing, said Devon Anderson, the Harris County district attorney.

"He unloaded the entire weapon into Deputy Goforth," she said — a 14-bullet clip, plus one that was already in the chamber.

No Surprise – Texas Shooting Suspect Has History as “Mentally Incompetent” In Prior Criminal Trials…
Posted on August 31, 2015 by sundance

From the outset, even before Miles was identified, we suspected the narrative surrounding the “person of interest” would encompass “mental incapacity“; apparently our suspicions are confirmed.

Houston (CNN) – The suspect in the slaying of Texas deputy Daron Goforth was found mentally incompetent in 2012 to stand trial on a felony assault charge, a prosecutor said Monday.

About three years ago, Shannon J. Miles was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after fighting a man at an Austin homeless shelter over the television remote control, said Joe Frederick, a prosecutor in Travis County, Texas.

Miles kicked and punched the victim, injuring his face, back and head, Frederick said. The deadly weapon used in the assault was his hands.

Before trial, Miles was found mentally incompetent and sent to Vernon State Mental Hospital for six months, Frederick said. He was determined to be competent and sent back to Travis County for trial, but prosecutors could not find the assault victim and the case was dropped, Frederick said.

Miles is charged with capital murder in the killing of Goforth, who was pumping gas into his patrol car Friday when a man approached from behind and shot him 15 times, a prosecutor said Monday.

Miles, 30, arrived at Harris County District Court in Houston on Monday wearing the yellow jumpsuit the county assigns to high-security inmates, his wrists and ankles shackled to his waist.

Miles did not speak much during the hearing, but at one point, Judge Denise Collins admonished Miles to address her as “ma’am.”

One of Miles’ court appointed attorneys, Anthony Osso, said Miles “looked to me to have a blank expression, which is always a cause for concern.”

Texas Black Activist Asks President to Denounce ‘Racist’ #BlackLivesMatter (Video)
by Lana Shadwick31 Aug 2015

A video made by a black activist asking the president and other leaders to denounce the #BlackLivesMatter movement has gone viral on Facebook. He calls the movement “a racist movement,” one that is “racist to the core.” He says the movement has only caused more disunion and hate among Americans.

Joe Evans #AllLivesMatter Denounce #BlacklivesMatter

The former vice chairman and executive director of the Jefferson County Republican Party challenges others in his video to not respond to the shooting of the deputy by calling for stricter gun laws or for changes in mental health approaches. He asks every leader, “starting with the president,” to “denounce the Black Lives Matter movement.”

Man charged with killing Texas deputy had been in mental hospital

Reuters by Jon Herskovitz | September 1, 2015

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - The man charged with fatally shooting a Houston-area deputy in a hail of gunfire spent four months in a mental hospital in 2012 after being declared incompetent to stand trial in an aggravated assault case, court documents showed.

Shannon Miles, 30, has been charged with capital murder, a crime punishable by death in Texas. He is accused of emptying a 15-round handgun into Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth on Friday evening as the lawman fueled a patrol car at a Houston-area gas station.

In 2012 when Miles was staying in Austin, he was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly beating up a man at a Salvation Army shelter over a TV remote control, an attack that left the victim with a broken vertebrae, the documents showed.

Miles was declared mentally incompetent and sent to the North Texas State Hospital. He was later deemed mentally competent but the case was eventually dismissed when the victim could not be found.

Miles appeared in court on Monday for an arraignment in the murder case and did not enter a plea.

"A plea of not guilty will be entered," his lawyer Anthony Osso told CNN on Tuesday, adding Miles was being held under protective custody in jail because of the high-profile nature of the case.

It is rare for a jury in Texas to hand out a sentence of not guilty by reason of insanity. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that executing the insane is unconstitutional, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

LOCAL HONOR GUARDS PREPARE FOR DEPUTY DARREN GOFORTH'S FUNERAL
The HPD Honor Guard makes sure honor, discipline, and respect are displayed at every officer's funeral.

ABC13.com
By Christine Dobbyn | September 1, 2015, 10:15PM

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- When Deputy Darren Goforth is laid to rest Friday, the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff's Office Honor Guards will join forces for what may be the biggest police funeral ever in the Houston area.

The HPD Honor Guard is the largest in Texas, and possibly in the entire nation.

Captain Gregory Fremin was drawn to the HPD Honor Guard 30 years ago.

"It is a challenge to keep your emotions in check but we all know when we arrive on a scene we have a job to do," Fremin said.

Sgt. James Armstrong is also one of 37 members of the prestigious group.

"To let the families know we are there for them and to honor this person's service to the city. He may have put his entire adult life into it and so that's our primary role to honor his service and show respect," Armstrong said.
