Watch live coverage amid a daunting attempt to pull the shipwrecked Costa Concordia upright.

The ship has been lying on its side ever since the ship hit rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio in January 2012, with the loss of 32 lives.

Salvage workers are attaching giant metal chains and cables to the ship, which weighs more than 114,000 tonnes and is roughly the length of three football fields.

Righting the ship is expected to take up to 12 hours.

Costa Concordia: Watermark shows lift progress

One of the largest and most daunting salvage operations ever undertaken is under way with an attempt to pull the shipwrecked Costa Concordia upright.

Footage from the scene shows the difference in colour between the newly-exposed part of the ship, and the part that has been exposed since it hit rocks and capsized in January 2012.

The whole operation is expected to take 12 hours.

Wow! Thanks, mbtb! :)

I hadn't heard a word of it - it's been a pretty busy irl day. Is it wrong of me to be counting the hours until bedtime before they even get home from school? ;)

Glad you did, mbtb. Very interesting. I've never seen anything like it, the little I caught, anyway. :)

Costa Concordia: Tragedy's full horror exposed

Never forget, this is a story about death; a story about human incompetence, and tragedy; about the actions of several men, employed to sail 4,000 passengers and crew along the Italian coast.

Thanks packy. I believe if the ship had not hung up on the rocks, it would have kept on sinking killing many more people. It was already damaged from the first collision.

I hope that the two remaining missing are found so that their families can bury them. After almost two years, it is probably too much to hope for.

Righting that ship was amazing. CBS just did a fast motion set of pictures to watch it go upright. Now comes the challenge of getting it to float to the scrapyard.

Naturally there is a short commercial beforehand...

Costa Concordia: What happened

A large gash in the hull just like the Titanic. This ship was going down if not caught on that reef. All because that ass of a captain was busy with his mistress. :NN20

I sure hope he is found guilty.

Yes for sure righting that ship was amazing.

And if it's true that he was kissing his mistress then it's even more sad that he wasn't more conscientious when taking on his responsibilities.
