The written word:

Let me walk you through the reading room,
where many books reside.
Where imagination, doubt and doom,
are written there inside.

A thirst for knowledge you will find
in every page you roam.
There’s learning here of every kind
in sentence and in poem.

Take down a book and delve inside,
and see what you may find.
Within these words, no meanings hide,
except the literal kind.

For Dickens, Hardy, Orwell and friends,
they too began this way.
No matter whether time transcends,
just read some more each day.

Lift up a book, at any time,
let your mind be taken in,
by stories, set in words sublime,
of people, kith and kin.

When weather it turns cold and damp
there’s nothing much to do.
Just sit awhile beside your lamp,
a book will see you through.

To praise the written word, if I may,
for solitary hours we spend
to live and learn from day to day,
a book will be your friend.

Thanks for sharing your poem... the joys of reading are not so common these days.

I have to admit I hardly ever pick up a book these days. There are minuses as well as pluses with the bosoming of Information available online.

What a lovely poem! I've always loved reading. Unfortunately, these days I don't have much time to read novels (since I work). :stamp

Hi there and thank you for the nice comments. I have a nephew who is now 22 but when he was very young he asked me about books one afternoon.
It occurred to me that he'd never been to a library, so I took him and got him a membership which he still continues to use. This little poem was inspired by those events - I wrote it 10 years ago.

Nice poem. I'm a reader so I really enjoyed its meaning. I just read Oscar Pistorius autobiography and The Old Man and the Sea. Next on my list is Lone Survivor.
