Software developer busted for outsourcing his own job

From MSN: http://now.msn.com/software-developer-outsources-his-own-job-to-chinese-consulting-form

According to a post on Verizon's security blog, a software developer named "Bob" from an unidentified U.S.-based company was busted in 2012 for outsourcing his own job out to a Chinese consulting firm. The company contacted Verizon for help after their IT department noticed someone logging on from China, eventually discovering Bob was spending less than a fifth of his six-figure salary to pay someone to do his work while he surfed Reddit, LinkedIn and Facebook. Evidence even suggested he had the same scam going across multiple companies in the area. Smart idea! The money Bob paid was obviously worth it: His performance review had ranked him as the best developer in the building.

A typical ‘work day’ for Bob looked like this:

9:00 a.m. – Arrive and surf Reddit for a couple of hours. Watch cat videos. Image

11:30 a.m. – Take lunch.

1:00 p.m. – Ebay time.

2:00 p.m. - Facebook updates – LinkedIn.

4:30 p.m. – End of day update e-mail to management.

5:00 p.m. – Go home.

Verizon's hunt for a mysterious hacker exposes 'top worker' at firm who let Chinese consultants log on to do his daily work.

to think so. Photo: Getty Images

When a routine security check by a US-based company showed someone was repeatedly logging on to their computer system from China, it naturally sent alarm bells ringing. Hackers were suspected and telecoms experts were called in.

It was only after a thorough investigation that it was revealed that the culprit was not a hacker, but "Bob" (not his real name), an "inoffensive and quiet" family man and the company's top-performing programmer, who could be seen toiling at his desk day after day and staring diligently at his monitor.

"The VPN logs showed him logged in from China, yet the employee is right there, sitting at his desk."
..... Andrew Valentine, Verizon

For Bob had come up with the idea of outsourcing his own job — to China. So, while a Chinese consulting firm got on with the job he was paid to do, on less than one-fifth of his salary, he whiled away his working day surfing Reddit, eBay and Facebook.
