Elderly woman destroys 19th-century fresco with DIY restoration

A 19th century Spanish fresco has been ruined after a good Samaritan attempted a DIY restoration of the artwork.

Ecce Homo by 19th-century painter Elías García Martínez on the walls of the church of Santuario de Misericordia

Three separate photographs of “Ecce Homo” by painter Elias Garcia Martinez show extensive damage caused by an elderly woman who decided the masterpiece needed a little refurbishment.

But in a time of austerity, rather than calling in a professional to complete the job, the unnamed woman attempted to restore the mural herself – at a devastating cost.

The result was a botched repair where the intricate brush strokes of Martinez were replaced with a haphazard splattering of the octogenarian's paint. Years of carefully calculated depth of expression simply washed out by copious amounts of red and brown.

The damage was discovered after the 19th century painter's granddaughter made a donation to the Centro de Estudios Borjanos in Borja, Spain, a couple of weeks ago. The Centro holds an archive of regional religious paintings with regularly-updated photographs.

After receiving the donation, employees at the Centro went to check on the mural at the church of Santuario de Misericodia only to find it drastically altered.

An original photograph of the painting taken in 2010, shows only minimal deterioration with Jesus crowned in thorns clearly visible in the portrait. There is slight white speckling across the piece.

Large white patches appear in a second photograph of the painting taken in July this year, possibly scrubbed off as the octogenarian began her project.

A final photograph reveals a portrait transformed beyond recognition.

The amateur restorer said she had undertaken the project "with good intentions" but, as culture councillor Juan Maria de Ojeda said, "she had gotten out of hand".

The restoration work was completed without permission.

World's worst restoration or 'street art by seniors'?
MEGAN LEVY
Last updated 16:22 24/08/201

A grandmother's less-than-artistic attempt to restore a century-old church fresco has turned into an unlikely art sensation, with thousands of people signing an online petition to save her questionable handiwork.

Eighty-one-year-old Cecilia Gimenez noticed that an oil painting of Jesus Christ on the wall of her local church near Zaragoza, in north-eastern Spain, was deteriorating and decided to take it upon herself to fix the 120-year-old fresco.

But the pensioner's shocking DIY restoration job left Jesus, who was wearing a crown of thorns and gazing sorrowfully towards heaven, looking more like a pale monkey with a half beard. Some have labelled it the worst art restoration of all time, while the BBC described the end result as looking like "a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic".

Gimenez insists she had permission from the priest to touch up the painting, entitled Ecce Homo (Behold The Man) and painted by Elias Garcia Martinez. Spanish jokesters have renamed the fresco Ecce Mono (Behold the Monkey).

But Gimenez says she hasn't finished yet.

"We have always repaired everything ourselves here. The priest knew about it. Of course he did," she told Spanish television.

"How could I do something like that without permission? I did not do it in secret. Anybody who entered the church was able to see me painting.

"I had nothing but good intentions and always believed I was doing the right thing. Besides, I hadn't finished the painting."

Petition launched to save 'world's worst restoration'

Ironic art fans have launched a petition to save the "world's worst restoration": a retouched, century-old church painting of Christ that has become an international joke.

Cecilia Gimenez, described as being in her 80s, has won global fame with her horribly botched impromptu attempt to restore an oil painting of Christ crowned with thorns, his sorrowful gaze raised to heaven.

The "restored" painting looks like a pale monkey's face surrounded by fur, with mishapen eyes and nose, and a crooked smudge for a mouth, a style some wits have compared to Picasso's.

Last laugh over Monkey Jesus

Another excuse to crack up at that picture.

A year ago, a botched restoration of a fresco of Christ by a Spanish retiree drew guffaws. Now, 81-year-old artist Cecilia Gimenez is having the last laugh.

Juan Maria Ojeda, an official in Borja, a town of 5000 in northeastern Spain, said the fresco has drawn more than 40,000 visitors and raised more than €50,000 (NZ$83,162) for a local charity.

Gimenez and a local council are to sign a deal sharing profits from merchandise featuring the image. Gimenez has also had her own art exhibited.

The fresco depicts Christ with a crown of thorns in a style known as Ecce Homo (Behold the Man). Amid last year's ridicule, some dubbed it Ecce Mono - Behold the Monkey.

Officials said it wasn't possible to restore the painting's original look.
