Aww how heartwarming about the woman having her cat with her. Too bad we have to get old and wither and die. I am gonna have a serious talk about it with someone when I pass over.

Tortoises unimpressed by Clayderman

NOT IMPRESSED: Galapagos tortoises at London's zoo
lumbered around impassively as famous French pianist
Richard Clayderman serenaded them.

No wonder they're endangered.

Galapagos tortoises at London's zoo lumbered around impassively as famous French pianist Richard Clayderman serenaded them with music from his latest album, Romantique, on Thursday (Friday NZ time).

The music - billed by his record company as an attempt to put the reptiles in the mood to mate - appeared lost on the slow-moving giants.

The tortoises didn't appear particularly impressed by Clayderman's hit, Ballade pour Adeline, and even a rousing rendition of Chariots of Fire did little to lift their spirits.

They only seemed to perk up when zookeepers brought them some carrots.

Galapagos tortoises are the largest in the world and can live for over 150 years. But the gentle animals have struggled to fend off predators and are now under threat.

Clayderman said that his golden retriever loved to lie by the piano when he was playing, "so maybe it's good for the animals to listen to music."

Maybe. But it's possible tortoises just don't appreciate what Clayderman has described as his "New Romantic" style.

Clayderman himself seemed a bit bemused by his record company's launch stunt.

"After playing all around the world - I used to do concerts in Asia, in South America, in Europe - it's funny to be here, in this very nice zoo," he said.

Javelin man pitches for phone record
LUCY TOWNEND
Last updated 12:00 08/02/2013

By combining title-winning javelin throwing talent with frustration at his old Nokia cellphone, a Palmerston North sportsman has discovered he could be in line to break a world record.

After hearing via Facebook that his friend in Finland knew someone who could fling a mobile phone 102 metres, five-times New Zealand junior javelin titleholder Ben Langton Burnell, 20, flexed his muscles and tried to go further. While at the Massey University athletics track, he hurled his rundown cellphone more than 117 metres.

"This phone crapped out not so long ago and I didn't know what I could do with it, and then I saw the record on Facebook and thought to myself that I could smash that.

"So when I was at training this week, I gave it a go and it just floated away and landed down at the other end of the track," Langton Burnell said.

He paced it out, under the watchful eye of his flatmate and fellow athletics record holder Andy Kruy, and measured it at nearly 120m.

He is now organising a regulated world record attempt to verify the throw at the upcoming regional championship later in the month.

As a carded New Zealand athlete on track to make the 2016 Olympic Games, Langton Burnell said winning any world record would be "pretty sweet".

"I'd be stoked to be world record holder at anything, but long-term if that was on the Olympic stage with a javelin that'd be cool."

For his build-up to his measured phone-throwing moment, Langton Burnell will continue his usual javelin training regime and rely on his natural talent.

"What I do is just grab it and chuck it like a javelin, maybe I'll do a little javelin run up and, yeah, just throw it.

"I'll just come out and give it a go, and just hope I throw the distance."

His personal best for throwing a javelin is 70.65m.

Belarus guard gets 2-year prison sentence for teddy bear “invasion”
Posted on February 18, 2013 by top99news

MINSK, Belarus A Belarusian court has handed out a two-year prison sentence to a border guard who failed to protect the ex-Soviet nation from foreign teddy bears.

Belarus Supreme Court said Monday the guard has been convicted of failure to report an intrusion of a light plane that dropped hundreds of teddy bears decked out in parachutes and slogans supporting human rights over the tightly controlled country of 10 million. The court wouldn't give his name or rank.

Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko, dubbed "Europe's last dictator" in the West, already sacked several top defense officials over the July 4 incident, in which two Swedish advertising agency employees piloted a light plane into Belarus' heavily guarded airspace in a show of support for Belarusian human rights activists.

Norway plans 12-hour prime-time TV show of a fireplace

The public television broadcast will focus on commentary and fireplace facts, as well as tips on burning, slicing and stacking the wood.

Image
BEAUTIFUL SIGHT: But worth watching for 12 hours?

OSLO — Norwegian public television plans to broadcast a burning fireplace for 12 straight hours from Friday evening, with firewood specialists providing color commentary, expert advice and a bit of cultural tutoring.

"We'll talk about the very nerdy subjects like burning, slicing and stacking the wood, but we'll also have cultural segments with music and poems," Rune Moeklebust, a producer for state broadcaster NRK.

"It will be very slow but noble television."

Moeklebust got the idea for the show from the wild success of a firewood book by Lars Mytting, Norway's biggest firewood celebrity. His book "Hel Ved", which means Strong Character in English, is a play on words because ved also means "firewood".

Mytting, a guest on tonight's broadcast, has sold close to 130,000 copies of the book since last year, a huge number in a country of 5 million people, with his publisher claiming that only "Fifty Shades of Grey" sold more copies during the recent holiday season.

NRK is not new to quirky programming.

In 2011, it broadcast 134 hours non-stop of a cruise ship going up the Norwegian coast to the Arctic, bagging the world record for the longest continuous TV program along the way.

At one point 600,000 people tuned in to watch that program with 3.2 million people, or over 60 percent of the population, glued to the screen at one point.

And an earlier broadcast of an eight hour train journey from Oslo to Bergen was so popular, NRK had to repeat it.

"People in Norway have a spiritual relationship with fire," Moeklebust said. "Fire is the reason we're here, if there was no firewood, we couldn't live in Norway, we'd freeze."

How will the fireplace do in the ratings?

"More people will tune in than on a normal Friday night," Moeklebust said.

Very cute and clever idea of the parachuting teddy bears. People might not pay attention to leaflets dropped from a plane, but ... teddy bears?? Image They won't forget that sight!

Sheep give peace a chance
Kapiti herd trained for Japanese beer ad

Last updated 17:21 05/04/2013

About 140 sheep trained on a Kapiti Coast farm have found fame in Japan as part of a beer commercial, after forming the word 'peace' for the shoot.

Trained in Reikorangi by Caroline Girdlestone and partner James Delaney of Hero Animals Ltd, the sheep formed the word as the climax of the Kirin Brewery commercial, shot in Moonshine Valley in January.

In the advertisement the sheep run past members of a Japanese band Arashi, who then point to a paddock in awe as they form the word 'peace'.

Miss Girdlestone said about 900 hours was spent training the sheep, first to be happy on a lead, and then to run towards a specific sound.

The sheep were mainly from her farm, with about 20 from Te Horo School children and their families brought in to boost numbers at the end, and form the word.

"It was a huge buzz when it all worked, and then we got to thinking, where else could we make words out of sheep?

"Now that they are trained, we can do it anywhere. But it was a lot of hard work in getting them trained for it."

Miss Girdlestone and Mr Delaney were head trainers on films Babe and Racing Stripes, as well as for several adverts on New Zealand and international television.

Seatbelt shirt aims to fool police
Last updated 09:56 03/04/2013

Image

This year's most stupid accessory award goes to: the seatbelt shirt from China which has a diagonal black stripe across it that makes it look as though you are wearing your seatbelt when you're daft enough not to.

The shirts cost between NZ$6.70 and NZ$9.60.

Frankly we wouldn't been seen dead in one, which is exactly what could happen if you wear one instead of the belt it's supposed to resemble.

CarNewsChina.com reports police were cracking down on the wearing of safety belts following a number of high profile accidents where occupants were killed after they were launched through car windows.

The report gave no indication of big a problem the non-wearing of seatbelts is, but added drivers were hoping the shirts would fool a busy policeman when he looks quickly inside.

Police said that while not wearing a safety belt was breaking the law, wearing the shirt was not.

The penalty for not wearing a safety belt is 50 yuan (NZ$9.50) and a deduction of two points, out of 12, of the driver’s licence.

V12 coffee-maker will get you going
Last updated 10:08 04/04/2013

It's just the thing to rev up a slow morning.

The Espresso Veloce V12 coffee machine dispenses rich Italian-style coffee via the exhaust pipes after being put through a oil filter lookalike coffee filter and comes with piston-style cups.

Just 500 of these coffee engines - to be made by Arte Meccanica Mastrogiuseppe - modelled on 3-litre Grand Prix engines will be built in either V10 or V12 configurations to half an original engine's size.

They will be handcrafted from regular automotive materials such as aluminium, magnesium and titanium.

No word on what it sounds like or the cost, but the price tag could you mean you won't need a caffeine fix to get you going after all.

Lawyer Story of the Year, Decade & Possibly the Century!

This took place in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire.

Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company.

In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost 'in a series of small fires.'

The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.

The lawyer sued - and WON! (Stay with me.)

Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable 'fire' and was obligated to pay the claim.

Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars that perished

NOW FOR THE BEST PART...

After the lawyer cashed the cheque, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!! With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

This true story won First Place in last year's Criminal Lawyers Award contest.

'I will always love youuuuuuuuu': Woman kicked off plane for refusing to stop singing Whitney Houston song

  • Passenger treated fellow travellers to renditions of the 1990s pop song on a six hour flight from Los Angeles to New York
  • But her solo performance soon became too much for passengers and crew
  • Pilot forced to divert flight path to make emergency landing in Kansas City
  • Fellow passenger filmed woman being escorted off plane - still singing

An American Airlines pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger refused to stop singing Whitney Houston's hit song I Will Always Love You.

The solo performance began shortly into the flight from Los Angeles to New York and her crooning quickly became too much for passengers and staff on the domestic flight last Thursday.

The pilot was forced to change course halfway through the six hour flight and make an unscheduled stop at Kansas City so officers could escort the woman from the plane.

Airport spokesman Joe McBride told WBTV: 'The woman was being disruptive and was removed from the plane for interfering with the flight crew.

'There was a federal air marshal on the aircraft, who subdued the woman and put her in cuffs and removed her from the plane.'

They waited 3 hours to divert the plane??? Do you know how many times that song can be song in 3 hours? If I were the pilot, I would have landed the plane in Vegas!

Any flight that I am on that is 4' or longer, I pop a Halcion, wrap up in my "sleepy shawl", snuggle into my own pillow, eye mask, ear plugs and go CLUNK! No freq. bathroom breaks or hang-overs.

I have had occasion to travel to Singapore from NZ... several times... and plan to do it some more, maybe that as well as then a similar length flight to UK. It's a 10hr plus flight... which I struggle to get through.... I do plan to TRY halcion or something next time.
Bourbon helps... but even so... being a "chain smoker" just doing without ciggies is hard :)

Sleeping through it sounds like a good idea.

My flight to Fiji was 11+ hrs. Slept almost the entire trip. Great thing about Halcion is, when you wake up, you are awake, no drugged / drowsy feeling. Just rarin' to go, while most of the other passengers are moving as though they are in Zombie Land.

Return flight was almost 12', every seat on the plane was taken. That is when "CLUNK" comes in really handy.
