FOX Chicago News
Chicago - A freak accident in a Northwest suburban pond has killed a 37-year-old man.
Anthony Hensley was working for a company that uses swans to keep geese out of a pond at a condominium complex near Des Plaines. Hensley, of Villa Park, was using a kayak to check on a swan Saturday. But police say the swan got spooked and started to attack him. Hensley fell out of his kayak, and he wasn't able to make it back to the shore.
He was pronounced dead later at a Park Ridge hospital

The video at the link talks of the Swan needing to be "put down" :13

In this instance.... despite sympathy for the guy and his loved ones.... I think the swan should be spared.

I can't find an update on the story...yet.

Family and friends spent Sunday trying to understand how a Villa Park man drowned in a Des Plaines area pond after he was apparently attacked by swans he took care of.
Anthony Hensley, a 37-year-old married father of two, worked for a company that used swans and dogs to keep geese away from properties.
He was checking on the swans near the Bay Colony condominiums in unincorporated Des Plaines Saturday morning when one of the swans swam at him, causing Hensley to roll off his kayak into the water.
Cook County sheriff’s investigators believe Hensley either got too close to the swan or the swan’s nesting area.

Swans obviously have aquired the taste of human flesh. They all must be destroyed. :D

Lol

The swan did not jump on the guy and chomp on his flesh. He drowned.

A very unfortunate accident. The swan (in it's own habitat) did what swans do to protect their nest and themselves... drive away a potential threat.

It seems that friends and family agree with Pixies...

I can't find any updates on the story.... is there a reprieve... or has the swan ceased to be?

I know swans are BIG.. seen them up close. My neighbour used to have chickens, ducks roaming free... and a one Goose who felt protective of the ducks for some reason. That damned goose would attack if you got near the ducks.. and he was relentless.. and delivered some painful leg nips.
The issue in this tragedy seems to be the FATE of the swan. The vid suggests calls to have it put down. I think not?

In Mexico, I was attacked by a huge turkey. I was washing clothes on the big rock by the well (this was a few years ago before we got all fancy with electricity and a washer) and out of nowhere the thing charged me from behind.

It's funny to say but it was scary at the time.

Yes, I did kill it later that day and we ate it.

Revenge tasted awesome

SARAH DERECOURT attacked by the white swan Aragorn................BULLY BIRD: Aragorn the swan

A woman attacked by Nelson's aggressive swan Aragorn has described how she almost drowned and was left swollen and bruised.

Sarah Derecourt said she was whitebaiting at the back of her Halifax East property, overlooking the Maitai River, her back was turned, when the swan attacked.

"I turned around and it jumped up onto me. At the same time it was kicking me and bit me on the back and I tripped on my whitebait net and fell back into the river.

"Then it jumped on top of me and grabbed my neck with its beak . . . then it started kicking the heck out of me and pushing me under the water with its feet.

"It was sitting on top of me and it's really heavy. I was a bit stunned at first and then I was pushing its neck away from me."

Unable to breathe as the swan pushed her under water, Mrs Derecourt said she started struggling for real and eventually got away, clambering out of the water.

There was a swan by the tiny lake in front of my patio several weeks ago. I tried to break off pieces of a roll I had to feed it and it got extremely close to me and made a hissing or growling type noise and tried to take the roll away from me. I got scared and hid behind a board and it was still trying to get at me, so I threw the whole roll behind it and I ran inside my fenced in patio and locked it!! I found out later, that the swan was one of two owned by a lady a few blocks away. I guess it got bored and came over to our development for a little visit. I don't know if it was vicious or not, but they are known for being aggressive. It was scary, but also thrilling being that close to one. (It was as tall as me!) I'd only seen them from a distance before.

Wow ... they talk about someone's "swan dance".

Poor guy ... I would never get in one of those things - ever!!!

They are funny birds aren't they? They appear so serene ... just floating by... So calm.
BUT they are paddling like CRAZY underneath the water to make it all happen!!

Yes!! (I'm only 5'3", but it was as big as an Ostrich.) When it was walking towards me, it stretched it's neck and lifted it's head high, and we were eye to eye. I couldn't believe it! It's beak and webbed feet were enormous too. I can imagine how a really aggressive one could kill a person.

I don't know if most swans are that big or if it was because it was someone's "pet"?

It sure is a lot of throat to be sore! :84

Per Wikipedia:

The swans are the largest members of the waterfowl family Anatidae, and are among the largest flying birds. The largest species, including the mute swan, trumpeter swan, and whooper swan, can reach length of over 1.5 m (60 inches) and weigh over 15 kg (33 pounds). Their wingspans can be almost 3 m (10 ft). Compared to the closely related geese they are much larger in size and have proportionally larger feet and necks. They also have a patch of unfeathered skin between the eyes and bill in adults. The sexes are alike in plumage, but males are generally bigger and heavier than females.

The one I encountered was a Mute Swan.
