The moon has been an impressive sight over the past few nights but the biggest 'supermoon' event of the year is predicted for tomorrow morning.

The 'supermoon' will be at its most impressive around 6am, as the moon's eliptical orbit reaches its closest point to Earth.

The event will be visible overnight, with the moon shining 10% brighter than usual.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth. The technical name is the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. The term "supermoon" is not astronomical, but originated in modern astrology. The association of the Moon with both oceanic and crustal tides has led to claims that the supermoon phenomenon may be associated with increased risk of events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but the evidence of such a link is widely held to be unconvincing.

The most recent occurrence was on August 10, 2014. The next and closest supermoon of 2014 will be on September 9.

The opposite phenomenon, an apogee-syzygy, has been called a micromoon,[4] though this term is not as widespread as supermoon.

fabulous pic. On a visit some years ago to Australia one of the things I've remember, indeed, one of the very few things I liked about the country - wouldn't get me living there and not just because of the creepy crawlies, I just didn't like it.

I did, however, think the beaches were gorgeous as were the night skies - I don't think I've ever seen a black sky lit up by stars so brightly and clearly in my life before or since. Just gorgeous.
