Doctor pulls inch-long cockroach from man's ear after it burrowed in while he slept and he failed to suck it out with a vacuum cleaner

  • Mr Hendrik Helmer from Darwin, Australia, woke up with pain in his right ear
  • He realised something was in there and unsuccessfully tried to vacuum it out
  • The pain escalated and so Mr Helmer rushed to seek medical attention

Sales of ear plugs may well rocket as a result of one poor Australian’s ordeal with a cockroach.

Hendrik Helmer, from Darwin, revealed that he was recently forced to seek help from a doctor after a cockroach burrowed into his right ear while he was asleep – and refused to come out.

It even defied Mr Helmer’s vacuum cleaner.

Mr Helmer was alerted to the presence of the unwanted tenant by a sharp pain in his ear, which woke him up.

He told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that his initial worry was that a poisonous spider – of which there are many down under – had burrowed its way into his ear canal.

The pain rapidly got worse so Mr Helmer tried to suck out the critter with a vacuum cleaner.

When that failed to work his flatmate decided that it would be best to seek medical help.

From the article:

The situation sucked: The cockroach even resisted Mr Helmer's vacuum cleaner :D

All of these creepy crawly critters are giving me the heebie jeebies. We have a lot of cock roaches and some poisonous spiders in Florida also. The only bug I am concerned about now is a flu bug. There is so much fluid in my ears that if a bug crawled in there it would drown!

Oh dear.... hope the flu does not hit you too badly :eek
For past few years I have gone for Flu vaccination.... and I have never had flu

I never knew what a cockroach looked like until I first went to Singapore.... and they are HUGE.. they are everywhere... but only ever saw a few single ones in our apartment.... big ones crawling... little ones flying :eek
Still makes me queasy when I see them around food markets etc I KNOW there are millions in drains and other hiding places.
Singapore is founded on a bug infested swamp... but I experienced few problems... gummint and private property owners do organise "fogging" spray,,, strong powder cloud to kill bugs (every two weeks around our apartment).....(mainly mosquitoes I think, because of risk of Malaria and Dengue fever) and places like food markets get closed for periods and fumigated... all part of life's fun :D
In NZ on very rare occasions we see a small "native cockroach" (single) tiny compared to Singapore.

Many years ago, while living in far west Texas, I was awakened from sleep by something ferociously digging and trying to crawl into my ear. It was a huge dark brown beetle. It looked to be about 6" long. I panicked, of course, and swatted that thing to Kingdom come. I have no idea where it landed. Never saw it again.

A six inch bug... swatted... should leave a bit of forensics? :lol

We have a "clerestory window" in our bedroom... we were woken one night by a ruckus and flapping sounds... sure a Bat had flown in (though never heard of them where we live)... whatever it was got behind the bed, but with a bit of furniture moving we got to it..... a GIANT moth.... never sen one before or since... though it is listed as a NZ native.

Spoiler:

Cock roaches always make me queasy. Flu worse today and am down in bed now. I had a flu shot too. I fought for days not to give in to laying down. So now I am resting, watching t.v., and doing my computer stuff on the laptop. I think I need a hot toddy, lol.

Soory the flu has got you :(

The "hot toddy" sounds good.

Back in the day I used take "Gee's Linctus" For Flu and cold symptom relief. YCan't remeber if you could just buy it at Chemist (drug store) or you needed a Dr prescription? I think it was banned because it contained opium? Or recipe changed? I have not tried to buy it in long while. Anyway...... it seemed to be great for colds and flu... mixed with hot water. I gradually improved the recipe by mixing Gee's Linctus, Drambuie, lemon juice, honey and a dash of boiling water... lol

Oh... and I had a brandy bowl (just one) and severed this "medicine" mix in that... as with brandy, it meant the vapour was all part of the experience.

Seemed to work? At least you FORGOT you were unwell :cool

EDIT:
Forgot t
