Selfie, twerk top annoying words list
Last updated 12:29 01/01/2014

A US university has issued its annual list of annoying words, and those flexible enough to take selfies of themselves twerking should take note.

In addition to "selfie" and "twerking," there was a strong sense among those who nominated words to this year's list that the word "hashtag" and term "Mr Mom" had both run their course.

"Selfie," a term that describes a self-taken photo, often from a smartphone, led the way among the more than 2000 nominations submitted to Lake Superior State University's 39th annual batch of words to banish due to overuse, over-reliance and overall fatigue.

Even US President Barack Obama got into the act when he took a well-publicised selfie with other world leaders in South Africa for Nelson Mandela's memorial service.

"It's a lame word. It's all about me, me, me," wrote David Kriege of Lake Mills, Wisconsin. "Put the smartphone away. Nobody cares about you."

Since 1975, the list has grown to more than 800 words, many from the worlds of politics, sports and popular - maybe too popular - culture........

The most annoying words of 2013
  • Selfie
  • Twerk
  • Hashtag
  • Twittersphere
  • Mister Mom
  • T-bone
  • [Insert item] on steroids
  • The suffix -ageddon: wine-ageddon, sale-ageddon, flower-ageddon, car-ageddon ...
  • The suffix -pocalypse: as in "snow-pocalypse"

In politics
  • Intellectually bankrupt
  • Morally bankrupt
  • Obamacare

In sport
  • Adversity
  • Fan base

Yes JFP... "white Hispanic" especially :eek

We can probably find lots of words to ban from the GZ case.

"Iced Tea" comes to mind.

I'd also ban the word "Hoodie"... and ban wearing one.. at least indoors, and on bright sunny days :)

Twitter has a vocab of it's own :)

I have seen "fogen" used by Traybots.... I think it's George? I think if you start to understand Traybots... you become one?

"Sliding off the fiscal cliff," or just "fiscal cliff." :46 I couldn't stand hearing that over and over. Especially since it pretended to explain (simplistically) why our government (US) had no money.... :98 I hate all the other above-listed cliche words words, too.

But "adversity"? I guess I haven't heard or seen that over-used since I follow no sports.

There are some classic misused words at True Gossip Forums....

One that springs to mind is "Prima facie Case" (or probably almost EVERY Latin phrase use by such people).

Prima facie means "at first sight" ("at first face" if you want to be pedantic) :) (I did study Latin at school BTW) :cool

In legal use... it is similar to "probable cause"... in effect enough to charge somebody... nothing more. It is certainly not an indication of guilt... saying "there is a prima facie case"... means no more than saying that a defendant has been charged with something. :wall
