Actor Patrick Macnee, star of The Avengers TV series, has died in California at the age of 93.

The Briton, best known for playing John Steed in the 1960s television spy series, died at home with his family at his bedside, his son Rupert said.

Macnee, who served in the Royal Navy during World War Two, also played roles in theatre, appearing on Broadway.

EXTREMELY sad news for me. :10

I was an Avengers FAN as a young teen... series 4 an 5 featuring Diana Rigg as Mrs Emma Peel, as well as Patrick Macnee as John Steed was my first experience of the show.. I watched and enjoyed later series but the Chemistry between MacNee and Rigg was never repeated. I quite unashamedly had a "crush" on Mrs Peel when I was a teen.. the older woman appeal.. and what a great character.. Super-intelligent as well as sexy woman.. well versed in Martial Arts :)

I have made reference to the avengers over the years online.. Patrick Macnee was my avatar pic for a period

A bit of a SPOOKY coincidence that I am currently watching reruns of Avengers series 4 and 5. I posted a thread giving links in TV Forum here. I was watching a show just an hour or so ago.. as I have been most days for past couple of weeks. I have watched some episodes within last couple of years, but only jut found all of series 4 and 5 available (free) online. I am keen to watch all the Mrs Peel episodes.. seines 4 alone is 26 episodes :95

RIP Patrick Macnee

Patrick Macnee, actor - obituary

Actor who brought Etonian nonchalance and jaunty eccentricity to the part of Steed in The Avengers

Patrick Macnee, who has died aged 93, was cast to perfection as the imperturbable secret agent John Steed in the 1960s television series The Avengers.

The programme began as unremarkable detective fare, with the raincoated Macnee playing second fiddle to Ian Hendry’s forensic surgeon. When Hendry left after the first season, Steed was pushed to the fore and Macnee threatened with the sack unless he breathed life into the character. Steed re-emerged as a lethal dandy, sporting boutonnière, sword-cane and curly-brimmed bowler. He was indubitably a gentleman and Macnee imbued the part with plenty of his own Etonian nonchalance and jaunty eccentricity.
