The drummer of the heavy metal group AC/DC, Phil Rudd, has been charged by New Zealand police with attempting to arrange a murder.

Mr Rudd, who was born in Australia, will also face charges of possessing the drugs methamphetamine and cannabis, and of threatening to kill.

The musician's house in Taraunga, on New Zealand's North Island, was raided on Thursday morning.

AC/DC is due to release a new album later this year.

The band's guitarist, Malcolm Young, was recently diagnosed with dementia.

Mr Rudd, 60, was kicked out of the band in 1983 and rejoined in 1994.

A police official quoted by the SunLive news website said the information that led to the raid on the house was provided by a member of the public

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has appeared in court this afternoon on a range of charges including attempting to procure two murders.

Rudd is accused of trying to get a person to murder two others.

The 60-year-old is also charged with possession of Class C cannabis and Class A methamphetamine drugs and threatening to kill.

Police have been searching Rudd's home today after receiving information.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee retired to Tauranga in 2010 and owns a restaurant there.

He moved to New Zealand in 1983. His former Michael Browning told the Daily Mail Australia the charge was "a bit of a shock, but there you go".

Staff at Phil Rudd's restaurant not surprised at AC/DC star's arrest
Published: 8:07AM Friday November 07, 2014 Source: ONE News

Neighbours of troubled rock star Phil Rudd have described him as a colourful character.

The AC/DC drummer appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday afternoon charged with attempting to procure two murders, threatening to kill and possession of cannabis and possession of methamphetamine.

The arrest followed a police search of the 60-year-old's Tauranga home after police received information from the public.

ONE News Reporter Ruth Wynn-Williams, speaking from Tauranga, told TV ONE's Breakfast that security guards have been patrolling the rocker's home for at least a month.

She said neighbours spoke positively of Rudd but that staff at his restaurant, Phil's Place, say they weren't entirely surprised with the arrest.

They said that while he's quite separate from the business, some said they know the kind of life he lives.

She also said that all of the windows at Rudd's house have been covered with posters from his solo album.

Rudd is on bail until November 27.

Hi Packy... charges dropped...

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd: Procuring murder charge dropped
KATIE KENNY
Last updated 15:03 07/11/2014

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd's charge of attempting to procure murder has been withdrawn.

Rudd appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday and was also charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of cannabis and threatening to kill.

Rudd's lawyer, Paul Mabey QC, said this afternoon the Crown solicitor withdrew the charge after a meeting between Mabey and police.

"The decision to charge Mr Rudd was made by the New Zealand Police without consultation with the Tauranga Crown solicitor," he said.

The Crown solicitor said there was insufficient evidence to justify the charge and has withdrawn the charge, Mabey said.

The Crown solicitor's office confirmed the charge had been withdrawn.

"The charge alleging an attempt to procure murder should never have been laid," Mabey said. "The Crown solicitor's opinion was not sought."

Mabey said Rudd would defend the threatening to kill charge. He described the drugs possession charges as "minor".

"Mr Rudd has suffered unnecessary and extremely damaging publicity as a result of widespread and sensational reporting of a very serious allegation, which on any basis was never justified."

Police were contacted for a response, and said a statement would be issued soon.

More soon.

Wow. First I was shocked at the accusation. Now I'm shocked it was dropped. What's going on?

:35 Can't wait for new music from AC/DC! Glad whatever is going on won't affect the new album! :Gslap
