She's lead a very interesting life. I read one of her autobiographies a long, long time ago. It's so sad to be losing so many legends of entertainment.

Shimon Peres remembers 'very strong, very beautiful' relative Lauren Bacall
Former Israeli president tells Haaretz about his meeting with Hollywood star in 1950s and the discovery that they were related.

Sometime in the early 1950s, the Hollywood star Lauren Bacall went to New York to meet a long lost relative. Her relative was none other than Shimon Peres, then serving in a senior position in the fledgling Israeli Defense Ministry.

“In 1952 or 1953 I came to New York, and people then knew that my original name was Perske,” Peres - whose tenure as Israeli president ended earlier this month - told Haaretz on Wednesday. “Lauren Bacall called me, said that she wanted to meet, and we did. We sat and talked about where our families came from, and discovered that we were from the same family.”

Both of Bacall’s parents were Jewish. Her mother, Natalie Weinstein-Bacal immigrated to New York from Romania, and her father, William Perske, was born in New Jersey to family that came from Poland. During their meeting, they discovered that Bacall’s father was a relative of Yitzhak Perske, the wealthy merchant and father of Shimon Peres.

c. 1944: Before she was Lauren

Image

In April 1943, still a teenager, Lauren Bacall set out for Hollywood to pursue her dreams of becoming an actress.

These experimental hair and make-up looks were for her first starring role as ‘Slim’ in the film ‘To Have and Have Not’. This role would not only begin her career but also introduce her to “the first and most electrifying love of her life”, Humphrey Bogart.

THE NAME – Born Betty Joan Perske her name went through various transformations before it became Lauren Bacall. Firstly, after her parents divorced she took her mother’s last name ‘Bacal’ which in later years she would add an extra ‘L’ to the end of to take away confusion over pronunciation and it was the decision of her Warner Bros. manager, Howard Hawkes, to adopt the name ‘Lauren’. He promptly spread the story that it was her grandmother’s name, and thus a star was born.

Lauren Bacall began her career in the days of the rigid Hollywood studio system. Major studios such as MGM, Paramount, Warner Bros. and others like them owned their actors and actresses and the stars had little say over what was done to them.

Lauren’s first meeting with the make-up team for this test was less than encouraging. Lauren said of the encounter, “Perc Westmore, the make-up artist, examined my face and said ”Ummhmm, we can pluck your eyebrows, shave your hairline and straighten your teeth.” I was terrified and upset.” Fortunately for Lauren, having quickly spoken to her manager, Howard Hawkes, he reassured her that he had chosen her for her thick eyebrows and crooked teeth and that’s the way they would stay. - Lauren Bacall, By Myself and Then Some (Autobiography).

Her estate is selling hundreds of items that had filled her three homes. Bonhams auction house estimates they will bring $3 million.

The film and theater legend died in New York City in August at age 89.

Bonhams says two Henry Moore sculptures from the collection will be offered during its Impressionist and modern art sale in November.

Bacall was a big fan of Moore’s work. Six more of his sculptures will be sold in March, with about 700 other lots. They include tribal art and paintings by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder and others.

They once decorated her homes in Los Angeles, Amagansett, Long Island, and the famed Dakota apartment building in Manhattan.
