Nelson Mandela dies
05 Dec 2013 23:27 Staff Reporter

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the father of the nation, died on December 5 2013 at the age of 95.

President Jacob Zuma made the announcement from the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday night. He said Mandela passed away at 20:50 surrounded by his wife, Graça Machel and members of his family.

The country's first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, died at his home in Houghton after a long illness.

Mandela was hospitalised on June 8 with a recurring lung infection. Initial reports from the Presidency suggested Mandela was stable, although his condition was serious. But on June 23, the Presidency announced that Mandela's condition had deteriorated and he was critical.

Court affidavits soon confirmed that the former statesman was on an assisted-breathing, life support machine. More reports emerged about Nelson Mandela in the days that followed, that he was in a "permanent vegetative state", although the presidency denied these, maintaining that he was "critical yet stable".

On his 95th birthday, July 18, President Jacob Zuma announced an improvement in Mandela's health. Mandela was discharged from hospital in September and transported to his home in Houghton. In November, his family said he remained "quite ill", but his pneumonia had cleared up. President Jacob Zuma visited Mandela on November 18 and said Mandela was still in a critical condition, but that he continued to respond to treatment.

Excellent movie (true story) about Mandela. When he was asked what actor he wanted to play him in the movie, he said Morgan Freeman. An excellent actor.

I have seen the movie.... Freeman is a great actor anyway.. and looking like Mandela helped :)

I remember the events in real life... as reported at least. NZ has always had close ties with SA. I especially remember the Rugby part of the story as it unfolded in real life... from a NZ perspective... Rugby and the Rugby World cup was something Mandela used to boost morale inside South Africa.. as well as promote South Africa to the world.

However...... (I would not bring it up today, except for reference to this movie).....
The SA bastards poisoned the NZ "Allblack" players (food poisoning) in order to win ... but they did not cover that in detail in the movie. It is accepted that food poisoning was deliberate... but not whodunit.

Mandela book stirs rugby poison riddle

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyu ... iddle.html

The "incident" has never been forgotten in the rugby world... just sayin' :roll

I am not saying Mandela knew about it (especially not today) but there was a LOT of pressure for SA to win and score an International photo op/morale boost... I report... you decide :)

I wonder where Suzie is today.

That book is pretty expensive but could be very interesting.

I don't think it usual for several people to come down with food poisoning especially if they eat the same things. They played well for being sick.

SA was an underdog and won. Since they won, there must be a reason they did besides fair and square. It could be just sour grapes or the bodyguard looking for money.

I DO NOT want to re-litigate the poisoning incident... it was 18 years ago!!!!!!

YOU know NOTHING about it..... you are just arguing because you "love Mandela"

The "evidence", news items, investigation reports (some done by SA authorities), interviews, CONFESSIONS etc were NOT on the interwebs... it pre-dates all that... but....

Trust me... it WAS deliberate poisoning... it was big news.... there was POLITICAL manoeuvres and pressure to not delay the awarding of the world cup.. it would have been held up in court for years. It was agreed by all that it happened... to argue otherwise is daft. There was a political decision to let SA (and Mandela) have the big closing ceremony, photo op, etc

DELIBERATE poisoning was confirmed.... when and where and how it happened was confirmed... the ONLY thing not confirmed (covered up) was who ordered it. The SA team management denied ordering it... and the SA government denied being involved. They got away with it. But to try and DENY it happened is daft.

Besides the politics and the the then shaky political and social situation in SA....NZ "let it go" for the good of the Game of Rugby (it would have Destroyed the Rugby World Cup.. which was only in it's third outing.).

I don't discuss politics and I know nothing about Rugby. I love Mandela for what he stood for. That was so nice of NZ to "let it go".

I have read a lot about that particular game on Wiki, however, since you brought it up.

Nelson Mandela: A man for the ages used sport to help shape the world

Prior to Mandela's influence, rugby was viewed as a sport for white South Africans. But Mandela changed the perception and it was one the tools he used to bring South Africans together.
''Forgiveness wise, a guy who has been through that and been in jail for 27 years, no one would do the walk like he does,'' White said. ''Rugby has changed our country. You have to compliment Mandela for that, he was bright enough to work that out.''

Obama, Bush, Clinton to travel to South Africa

The White House said Friday that President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama would travel to South Africa next week to pay their respects. They will be joined on Air Force One by former President George W. Bush and wife Laura Bush, who "gratefully accepted" the invitation from the Obamas, a Bush spokesman said.

Rugby world pays tribute to Mandela

Snipped:

NZ Rugby CEO Steve Tew saluted Mandela, saying the sport had lost "a champion of our game" with his passing.

"New Zealand Rugby has enormous respect for Mr Mandela and his incredible contribution to his country and people," he said.

"We have lost a champion for our game, a leader whose inspiration ensured Rugby World Cup in 1995 was a remarkable time for our sport and whose influence on sport has been far-reaching.

"His presentation of the Webb Ellis Cup to Francois Pienaar after South Africa overcame the All Blacks in the Final is a moment that few New Zealanders will ever forget."

Nelson Mandela used sport to help South Africa rise above racial divisions

Long before India and Pakistan engaged in several rounds of cricket diplomacy with fleeting levels of success, Mandela used rugby, the white man’s game, to create a ‘Rainbow Nation’. The year was 1995 and South Africa were hosting the World Cup. The Springboks were a talented bunch, but no one quite expected them to rule the universe. But they did and how!

IMO He knew the power of sport. It is seen in our country with Football, Baseball, and other sports.

Interpreter at Mandela memorial branded 'fake'

PRETORIA, South Africa -- The sign language interpreter used at Tuesday's memorial service for Nelson Mandela, and whose image was broadcast around the world as he shared a stage with world leaders including President Obama, was being called a "fake" by the Deaf Federation of South Africa.

Twitter fury over Dave's selfie with Obama and a flirty Dane: Backlash over leaders' picture at Mandela memorial service that left Michelle VERY unamused

  • Hundreds of world leaders gather in Johannesburg's FNB Stadium for Nelson Mandela's memorial service
  • Barack Obama paid tribute to anti-apartheid icon, saying 'We will never see the likes of Nelson Mandela again'
  • Shook hands with Cuba's Raul Castro on his way to the podium in historic gesture of reconciliation
  • He was joined by ex-Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter at the ceremony
  • David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband were there along with every living former Prime Minister of the UK
  • Ceremony started an hour late in pouring rain as leader said 'the gods are welcoming Mandela to heaven'
  • But 95,000-seater stadium was around a third empty as many well-wishers were apparently deterred by weather
  • South African president Jacob Zuma repeatedly booed by the crowd while Obama and Robert Mugabe are cheered
  • Obama and Cameron face backlash over 'selfie' photograph with Denmark's Helle Thorning-Schmidt
  • Photographer who caught world leaders taking a 'selfie' says they were 'simply acting like human beings'

For the thousands of mourners inside Johannesburg's FNB Stadium it was meant to be a fitting tribute to a 'giant of history'.

But while some reflected on the remarkable life of Nelson Mandela, some world leaders saw it as the perfect opportunity to grab a quick 'selfie' with their peers - prompting a backlash from web users accusing them of undermining the seriousness of the event.

U.S. President Barack Obama, Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt grinned as they cosied up for a quick picture at yesterday's memorial service for the former South African president, prompting an outpouring of criticism.

As the trio posed for the mobile phone snap, Obama's wife Michelle sat alongside her husband looking somewhat stony faced.

Her mood didn't improve as Mr Obama and Ms Thorning-Schmidt talked through the order of service and shared a joke.

And it seems that the frosty faced First Lady was so unimpressed with her husband's behaviour that she eventually put an end to the fun.

A photo sequence which later went viral online appears to show Michelle swapping seats to sit between Barack and Ms Thorning-Schmidt.
