By DAILYMAIL.COM REPORTER | UPDATED: 02:14 EST, 20 October 2015

A Florida church drummer was shot dead by a plain clothes officer who said he was 'suddenly confronted by an armed subject', according to police.

Corey Jones, 31, of Boynton Beach was fatally shot by Palm Beach Gardens Officer Nouman Raja on Sunday around 3.15am after his car broke down following a gig on Saturday night.

Jones, who was a member of the band Future Prezidents, had trouble with his Hyundai Santa Fe after the gig in Jupiter and had pulled over to the nearest exit, the Palm Beach Post reported.

While family members said authorities have refused to fully describe the details of what occurred during the confrontation that left Jones dead, police released a statement that said the officer was confronted by an armed subject.

Police said the rookie officer was in an unmarked police car and stopped to investigate what he believed to be an abandoned vehicle on Interstate 95.

'As the officer exited his vehicle, he was suddenly confronted by an armed subject,' the statement said.

'As a result of the confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm resulting in the death of the subject, Corey Jones.

'Per Department policy the officer is currently on paid administrative leave and an independent investigation is being conducted by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

'No additional information at this time.'

A source with knowledge of the incident told The Palm Beach Post that Jones had a gun, but that the confrontation might have been a misunderstanding between Jones and Raja.

'The assumption is that the guy didn't know he was a cop,' the source said, who did not want to be identified as the investigation is still underway.

Exclusive: Source details officer's account of fatal shooting
By Terri Parker | WPBF.com | updated October 20, 2015, 2:39PM

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. —According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office source who can’t comment publicly, the account Palm Beach Gardens officer Nouman Raja told investigators is that stranded motorist Corey Jones pulled a gun on him as soon as Raja approached him on the PGA exit ramp from I-95 and said, “Police, man, are you alright?”

Raja said he then fired two to three shots at Jones, who was standing behind his open driver’s side door. He said Jones then took off running.

Raja told investigators he was tracking Jones as he ran, and saw him make it to the guardrail west of the car, about 30 feet away.

The source said Raja said he could see the flickering silver of a laser on Jones’ gun, and that’s when he took aim and fired two more times.

Raja was working an undercover surveillance detail on burgled cars, and pulled up to Jones in a white unmarked passenger van, perpendicular to the front of Jones’ car.

He was wearing jeans, a tan T-shirt and a ball cap. He did not have his duty gun on him, but a smaller, back-up Glock in a front holster. The duty gun was in the van.

The source said Raja told detectives Jones was standing, and Jones immediately said, “I’m okay.”

Raja said he then identified himself as police, and that’s when Jones pulled out his gun, and Raja immediately shot at him.
[...]
According to the source, evidence technicians found five casings from Raja’s Glock 40 at the scene.

They also found a Jimenez Arms 380 semi-automatic pistol, with six live rounds in the magazine, which apparently belonged to Jones.

Mayor: Some calling for special prosecutor in Corey Jones’ investigation
Rally to be held at church to raise money, support for Jones’ family

The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigates the area
where Corey Jones was shot to death early Sunday morning.

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. —As Riviera Beach Mayor and Bishop Thomas Masters plans a rally Monday in memory of slain drummer Corey Jones, he says many in the African-American community are also calling for a special prosecutor to investigate Jones’ death.

“The FBI is pretty well respected across the board, but I think generally, the cry is now, that some people would rather see a special prosecutor,” said Masters.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw on Friday asked the FBI to offer assistance in the investigation into Jones’ death, shot three times by Palm Beach Gardens police Officer Nouman Raja, who was in plainclothes, and unmarked van, and was investigating what he thought was an abandoned vehicle on an I-95 exit ramp.
[...]
On Saturday, The FBI’s Evidence Response Team gathered at the shooting scene to collect evidence and re-create a model of what happened.

According to the FBI website, “These highly-trained and equipped teams operate at a high level of competence to ensure evidence is collected in such a manner that it can be introduced in courts throughout the U.S. and the world. ERTs strive to be the model for crime scene processing from the standpoint of safety, expertise, training, equipment, and ability.”

Last week, State Attorney Dave Aronberg also released a statement, saying his office was conducting an independent investigation into Jones’ death and would share information with the FDLE.

Aronberg’s spokesman would not clarify whether the FDLE was joining the investigation, saying the statement spoke for itself.

Masters said he thinks an outside prosecutor would help the situation as well. He said they are also calling for body cameras for all police officers, immediately.

Corey Jones supporters hold news conference after returning from Washington, D.C.
By Jacqulyn Powell, Christina Noce | WPTV.com | November 20, 2015

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - A group of Corey Jones supporters who visited Washington, D.C. this week held a news conference Friday morning.

The group included the mayors of Riviera Beach and Mangonia Park, city officials, a few activist group leaders and a couple of Jones's family members.

They say they were able to sit down and talk to several of Florida's lawmakers yesterday including U.S. Representatives Alcee Hastings, Patrick Murphy, Lois Frankel and Ted Deutch.

They talked about introducing legislation that would make it illegal for officers to make traffic stops in unmarked cars.

Corey Jones protestors move from mall to I-95 ramp
By Brian Entin | WPTV.com | November 21, 2015

The group wasn't as large as many expected, but the small, peaceful crowd of Corey Jones supporters got their message across.

"We are rallying for Corey. No one broken down on the side of the highway should lose their life waiting for a tow truck," protestor Pandora Hayes said.

The crowd of about fifty started their rally Saturday on the side of PGA Boulevard near the entrance to The Gardens Mall.
[...]
A group of motorcyclists slowed traffic to a crawl along PGA so cars would have to notice the signs and hear the chants.

All the while, police looked on and interacted with the crowd with smiles and handshakes.

Then the crowd of protestors got in their cars and moved to the Interstate 95 off ramp where Corey Jones was killed by Officer Nouman Raja.

About twenty cars pulled onto the side of the highway and opened their hoods...a symbolic gesture to indicate they were broken down the same way Jones was.

Judge won’t order documents released in Corey Jones shooting case
By Daphne Duret | PalmBeachPost | January 6, 2016

A judge on Wednesday denied a defense attorney’s request to force prosecutors to release information on Nouman Raja’s firing from the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department in the wake of Jones’ death, along with any information on the state attorney’s office investigation of the shooting.
[...]
Three agencies are now investigating Raja’s shooting of Jones — the state attorney’s office, the Palm Beach County’s Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Edmondson declined to discuss specifics on when they believed those investigations would conclude but said it would be “a matter of months.”
