Manhunt: Escaped killers 'could literally be anywhere'

CNN | By Kevin Conlon and Mark Morgenstein
Updated 10:05 PM ET, Sun June 7, 2015

The U.S. Marshals Service issued federal arrest warrants Sunday for two convicted killers who escaped from a maximum security prison in upstate New York over the weekend.

The warrants charge Richard Matt and David Sweat with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, according to William O'Toole, a U.S. Marshals Service spokesman. The warrants clear the way for the federal government to involve its considerable resources in the manhunt.

"Every resource available to us will be used in bringing these two men to justice."

Also Sunday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to the pair's capture.

An elaborate escape

Matt and Sweat apparently were last seen at 10:30 p.m. Friday during a standing count, authorities said.

Head counts are performed every two hours throughout the night when guards visually check to see whether inmates are in their bunks, Clinton Correctional Facility Supervisor Steven Racette said.

The escapees tricked the guards by arranging things in the bunks to look "like people were sleeping ... with these sweatshirt hoodies on," the governor said.

Once they were out of their cells, they then followed a catwalk "down an elaborate maze of pipes into tunnels and exited a series of tunnels at the manhole cover," he said.

They evaded detection for some seven hours, until the inmate count 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Exactly how they got the necessary tools remains a mystery, but Cuomo -- who toured the escape route Sunday -- said it was possible the tools came from workers performing regular maintenance on the 1845 facility.

Police Investigating Leads in Search for Escaped New York Prison Inmates

ABC NEWS
Jun 11, 2015, 12:34 AM ET

New York State Police closed part of a road east of Dannemora Wednesday to investigate a lead in the search for two inmates who escaped from a maximum-security prison.

According to a police news release, a stretch of State Route 374 – nearly eight miles long – is likely to remain closed throughout the morning, and residents can expect an increased police presence in the area.

David Sweat and Richard Matt were reported missing from Clinton Correctional Facility, located about 20 miles south of the Canadian border, on Saturday.

The inmates may have considered Vermont as “a possible destination,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a Wednesday news conference.

Corrections officers, other inmates and contract employees who worked at the prisons are among those being interviewed by investigators, and New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico confirmed that training supervisor Joyce Mitchell was among the interviewees.

"She befriended the inmates and she may have had some role in assisting them but I'm not going to go into any further details," D'Amico said.

Hi Lisa! :28

Yep, she seems to be a piece of work.
Next we will hear that hubby (who works at prison) provided the power tools.
I just hope they didn't make a deal with her during interrogations.
Without her help, this would not be happening. SMDH

I've been waiting for Daily Mail to break the story. I think they have the BEST reporting and photos on US stories. :)

Prison worker is charged with helping 'Shawshank' prisoners escape - amid claims she 'gave them hacksaws, had affairs with BOTH of them and that her husband helped too'

DAILYMAIL.COM | UPDATED: June 12, 2105, 8:03PM ET
By SOPHIE JANE EVANS and LOUISE BOYLE

The female prison worker who allegedly helped two murderers escape from a New York prison last weekend by supplying them with prohibited items has been charged in the breakout.

Joyce Mitchell, an industrial training supervisor at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, also reportedly agreed to be the getaway driver for Richard Matt and David Sweat, but got cold feet.

The 51-year-old grandmother was arrested on Friday evening on charges that she aided the pair in their extraordinary escape last Saturday.

She will be arraigned on counts of promoting prison contraband in the first degree - a felony - and criminal facilitation in the fourth degree - a misdemeanor - on Friday night, officials said.

Mitchell is rumored to have had affairs with both Matt, 48, and Sweat, 34, before providing them with contraband for their escape, including hacksaw blades, drill bits and goggles with lights.

But the contraband did not include the power tools used by the men to cut holes in their cell walls and a steam pipe before they escaped via a manhole outside the maximum-security prison.

New York prison employee arraigned for allegedly helping killers escape

CNN | Updated 11:19 PM ET, June 12, 2015
By Ray Sanchez, Greg Botelho and Faith Karimi

(CNN)A New York prison tailor who allegedly aided a pair of convicted murderers before their brazen escape was arraigned Friday on a felony charge of promoting prison contraband and a misdemeanor charge of criminal facilitation.

Joyce Mitchell, who authorities said has voluntarily provided useful information in the six-day manhunt, attended the arraignment hearing in handcuffs. She pleaded not guilty.

If convicted, she faces up to eight years in prison.

Mitchell has been suspended from her job without pay, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said.

Since the breakout of felons Richard Matt and David Sweat was discovered Saturday, authorities have mentioned her as a possible getaway driver as well as a supplier of tools used in the escape. And her cell phone was used to make calls to people connected to Matt, according to a source.

Mitchell has told investigators that Matt made her feel "special" though she didn't say she was in love with him, a source familiar with the investigation said.

Her husband and prison co-worker, Lyle Mitchell, also is under investigation, authorities said.

Joyce Mitchell gave hacksaw blades, drill bits and lighted eyeglasses to the fugitive felons Richard Matt and David Sweat before their escape, sources said.

Mitchell "provided some form of equipment or tools" to the inmates while her husband "possibly could have been involved or at least had knowledge" of the escape, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie told CNN. The information was developed through interviews.

I've got the TV on mute watching the scrolls at bottom, hoping and praying they find these scums tonight. You've posted about all there is, Lisa. Nothing much more at this point. Very little on the Allegany County scanner; reports to Command Center as they search homes.

I was just thinking. George Soros gave $33 million to on-the-ground activists in Ferguson. Imagine if HALF of that went to the New York LEO search this week.
