Plattsburgh, New York (CNN)Richard Matt, one of two escaped murderers from an upstate New York prison, has been shot and officers involved in a three-week manhunt are pursuing fugitive David Sweat, a law enforcement source briefed on the investigation said Friday.

"Matt has been shot, he's down," Lenny DePaul, a former U.S. Marshal told CNN. "Apparently he's been hit. Not sure what his status is at this point."

The shooting occurred on a day that the New York State Police reported that Matt and Sweat may be headed to Canada.

Investigators were conducting DNA tests on potential new evidence, a source close to the investigation said.

A reported burglary led police to a cabin Thursday in the town of Malone, New York, State Police spokesman Beau Duffy told CNN.

Conclusive evidence was found in the cabin, which is being tested, he added.

"There has been no definitive credible sighting based on a physical description to pair with the evidence, but we're certain that the evidence is conclusive," State Police Maj. Charles Guess said Friday at a news conference.

DePaul told CNN he believes the shooting occurred in Malone but had no confirmation.

"They stuck together," he said."They needed each other."

Stopped in his tracks by a lone officer. And yes I am very pleased that both he and his cohort where stopped before they could kill anyone and very happy no officers were shot or injured. He looks horrible, I will be pleased if he didn't get to enjoy a moment of his freedom, though I suspect once we nurse him back to health he will have many fond memories of his time on the run. Truly disgusting.

From what all I have heard and read, the LE really wanted him alive.
They are eager to find out what actually occurred before and during the escape, if he will be truthful.
Not sure the prison worker woman and her husband have revealed everything.
And there may be others involved.

I am just happy this search is over for the LE and especially residents in a big area.
So worried there would be more casualties before it ended.

Captured escapee David Sweat says he planned to go to Mexico, Cuomo says

Malone, New York -- David Sweat and Richard Matt planned to head to Mexico after busting out of Clinton Correctional Facility more than three weeks ago, but had to improvise after the prison tailor accused of aiding them failed to show up to give them a ride, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday, citing statements reportedly made by Sweat to investigators.

"They would kill (tailor Joyce) Mitchell's husband, and then get in the car and drive to Mexico on the theory that Mitchell was in love with one or both of them," Cuomo told "The Capitol Pressroom" radio program. "And then they would go live happily ever after, which is a fairy tale that I wasn't read as a child. But we all believe what we want to believe."

But when Mitchell failed to show up, the pair had to improvise and instead headed north, toward Canada, Cuomo said.

According to Sweat, he and Matt were together until five days ago when Sweat said he decided to go on his own because the older inmate was slowing him down, Cuomo said.

DANNEMORA, N.Y. - Federal authorities say prison escapee Richard Matt was shot and killed after pointing a 20-gauge shotgun at an officer.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Thursday released new details about the takedown of Matt. After 20 days of searching, the end of the manhunt for one of the two escapees came quickly. Matt was tracked down in the woods of Malone last Friday. The break came after a local resident reported his camper had been shot at while driving along Route 30 in Malone. A Border Patrol tactical team was flown to the area by helicopters and began searching around 3:45 p.m. The agency says soon after, Matt was spotted lying down behind a fallen tree. The border patrol says one agent opened fire after Matt aimed his shotgun at the officer.

Thursday's statement is the first official indication Matt actually pointed his gun. Previously, authorities had only said Matt failed to comply with commands to raise his hands. That had led to questions about whether the officers could have taken Matt alive.

The border patrol still has not released the name of the officer who fired the shots.

While Matt is dead and Sweat is in custody, authorities are still investigating the inmates’ movements while they were on the run. Police have evidence the pair relied on supplies from camps and cabins. So they are now asking owners of camps, cabins and other structures in certain areas where the escapees are believed to have traveled to check their properties for missing or left behind items.

Escapee David Sweat to face prison discipline hearing

(CNN) - A New York inmate who pulled off an elaborate escape from a prison in early June and was shot and recaptured by authorities days ago will face a disciplinary hearing to figure out what should happen to him now.

A source within the New York Department of Corrections who is close to the case of David Sweat told CNN that the convict's hearing will be closed to the public. The date and time of the hearing won't be released either, the source said, and it will be several weeks before the outcome is announced.

Sweat will not have an attorney, the source said. In the meantime, the prisoner will be confined, alone, to a cell that is 105 square feet.

On Sunday, Sweat was released from Albany Medical Center and taken to maximum security Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus, New York, according to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

Accused prison escape conspirator en route to Clinton County Jail

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. —The woman accused of helping two inmates escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility last month will soon be back in the North Country.

Clinton Correctional Facility tailor Joyce Mitchell is ecstatic the manhunt is over, according to her attorney.
Prison tailor Joyce Mitchell was being transferred Tuesday night from the Rensselaer County Jail in Troy, New York, to the Clinton County Jail in Plattsburgh.

WPTZ NewsChannel 5 learned Mitchell, 51, was expected to arrive at the jail sometime Tuesday night.

Mitchell was released from the Rensselaer County Jail about 7:30 p.m.

Clinton County Sheriff David Favro requested Mitchell be moved to the Rensselaer County Jail June 13. Officials would not say why Mitchell was returning to the Clinton County Jail.
