I was aware of the Murder from news reports at the time.

I have just watched the movie "American Sniper" and so am reminded.

From Wikepedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Kyle

Quote:
On Saturday, February 2, 2013, Kyle and a companion, Chad Littlefield, were shot and killed at the Rough Creek Ranch-Lodge-Resort shooting range in Erath County, Texas, by 25-year-old Marine Corps veteran Eddie Ray Routh, whom Kyle and Littlefield had reportedly taken to the gun range in an effort to help him with what they were told by his mother was PTSD.

Local police captured Routh after a short freeway chase, which ended when Routh, who had left the scene of the shootings in Kyle's Ford F-350 truck, crashed into a police cruiser. Routh was arrested just before 9 pm the same day in Lancaster, Texas. Erath County sheriffs said the motive for the killing was unclear. Routh, from Lancaster, was arraigned February 2, 2013, on two counts of capital murder, according to Sergeant Lonny Haschel of the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was taken to the Erath County Jail for holding under a $3 million bond. Routh's trial was set to begin May 5, 2014, but was delayed to allow more time to comply with DNA test requirements.

A memorial service was held for Kyle at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on February 11, 2013. Kyle was buried on February 12, 2013, in Texas State Cemetery, Austin, Texas, after a funeral procession from Midlothian, Texas, to Austin, stretching over 200 miles. Hundreds of local and out-of-state residents lined Interstate 35 to view the procession and pay their final respects to Kyle.

The Iraq War veteran accused of killing a former Navy Seal sniper and his friend on a Texas shooting range before making off in the victim's pickup told his sister he had 'traded his soul for a new truck', it has been claimed.

Eddie Ray Routh, 25, is charged with the murders of Chris Kyle, author of the best-selling book 'American Sniper,' and his friend Chad Littlefield at a shooting range in Glen Rose. He is on suicide watch in the Erath County Jail, where he's being held on $3 million bond.

Routh had been taken to a mental hospital twice in the past five months and told authorities that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, police records show.

According to an Erath County arrest warrant affidavit obtained by WFAA-TV after the shootings Routh told his sister and brother-in-law that he 'traded his soul for a new truck'.

Police said that Routh was driving the truck of victim and ex-Navy SEAL Chris Kyle at the time of arrest.

Routh, a member of the Marines Corps Reserve, was first taken to a mental hospital on Sept. 2 after he threatened to kill his family and himself, according to police records in Lancaster, where Routh lives.

Authorities found Routh walking nearby with no shirt and no shoes, and smelling of alcohol. Routh told authorities he was a Marine veteran who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

'Eddie stated he was hurting and that his family does not understand what he has been through," the report said.

Crime and lawsuits cloud new 'American Sniper' movie
Reuters
By Marice Richter December 26, 2014 7:00 PM

DALLAS (Reuters) - The real-life story behind Hollywood's "American Sniper," rolled out this holiday season, has been a dark tale of lawsuits and a pending murder trial for the man accused of gunning down the movie's hero.

Iraq War veteran Eddie Ray Routh is to stand trial in February on charges of murdering Chris Kyle, the former Navy SEAL whose best-selling autobiography "American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History" was the basis for the film from director Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper.

Prosecutors recently said they are not seeking the death penalty against Routh, who could face life in prison if convicted, said Warren St. John, one of Routh's court-appointed attorneys.

"Our guy is not evil," said St. John, adding that the defense will argue that Routh is insane.

Kyle apparently saw Routh as a troubled veteran in need of help.

Jury selection in Routh trial begins Thursday

Stephenville Empire Tribune

Officials will soon begin the monumental task of weeding through the 800 Erath County residents who have been summoned as potential jurors in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh.
The capital murder trial, set to begin next week, will be the largest trial the county has ever seen. District Clerk Wanda Pringle invited media to the courtroom Monday afternoon to discuss rules and procedures.
She said qualifying sessions for jury selection will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Personal note: Not much current info in the news, mostly about the movie or describing the big trial in a small town setting.
I am planning on going to the Friday, 1:00 p.m. jury selection, if I am able to get in. I cannot imagine a jury ready to be seated by next Tuesday.

Jury Seated in Chris Kyle Slaying Trial

NBCDFW 6:35PM CST
By Jamie Stengle

Dallas - A jury was seated Monday in the trial of a man charged with killing the former Navy SEAL depicted in the Oscar-nominated movie "American Sniper," after extra efforts to keep publicity about the case and the movie from preventing a fair trial.

Ten women and two men will serve as jurors for the trial of Eddie Ray Routh starting Wednesday.

Routh, a former Marine, is charged with capital murder in the deaths of 38-year-old Chris Kyle and Kyle's friend, 35-year-old Chad Littlefield.

Opening statements are scheduled to begin Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Veterans Group Claims to Have Uncovered Potentially Significant Truth About Chris Kyle’s Alleged Killer
Feb. 5, 2015 5:55pm Jason Howerton

Eddie Ray Routh, the Marine veteran accused of murdering legendary Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in cold blood, will soon stand trial for murder. Meanwhile, a veterans group is claiming to have uncovered a significant detail that — if true — could have an impact on the case.

Spencer Walker, board president of the Warfighter Foundation and Marine combat veteran, told TheBlaze in a phone interview on Thursday that they have interviewed several U.S. Marine sources, some who knew and served with Routh, who have confirmed that the accused killer never saw any combat or experienced any traumatic situations while serving overseas.

It has been alleged that Routh was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder when he shot and killed Kyle and Navy SEAL Chad Littlefield at a remote shooting range in Texas.

TheBlaze has reached out to several PTSD specialists in an effort to determine whether it’s common for military veterans who have not served in combat to suffer from some form of PTSD.

Wife Of ‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle To Testify

CBS11DFW
February 10, 2015 12:26 PM

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (AP) - Prosecutors say the widow of Chris Kyle, the former Navy SEAL depicted in the Oscar-nominated movie “American Sniper,” will be among the first witnesses to testify during the trial of his alleged killer in Texas.

Opening statements are expected Wednesday in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh. The former Marine is accused of fatally shooting Kyle and Kyle’s friend, Chad Littlefield, as the pair tried to help Routh a shooting range.

Erath County District Attorney Alan Nash said Tuesday that the prosecution’s first two witnesses will be Taya Kyle and Littlefield’s mother, Judy.

American Sniper' Trial: Details of Fatal Shooting Revealed in Opening Statements
Feb 11, 2015, 11:12 AM ET

By MEGHAN KENEALLY

The prosecution methodically walked through the fatal day when "American Sniper" Chris Kyle and his friend were killed, giving an idea of how he will combat an insanity plea expected from the accused, Eddie Ray Routh.

He described how Routh was "a little strange," but that didn't stop Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield, from doing one of their favorite things, "spending time with veterans."

Erath County District Attorney Alan Nash described how Routh allegedly shot Kyle five times in the back and side and once in the top of the head, and Littlefield four times in the back, once in the hand, once in the face and once in the top of the head.
