Sheesh! I clicked on the link but somehow missed that there was an indictment. Best guess someone snagged recently in the big drug/gang bust sang for a better deal.

Was just looking to see if the indicted guy was included in group Panula county rounded up not long ago. The idea that someone stayed mum for over a year then traded info for a shorter drug sentence is sickening. Downright depraved if he (or snitch???) is associated with death of girl in July too. SMH at how little people value life beyond knowing they don't want to spend it behind bars ...messed up.

I am pretty sure Quitnon was in jail elsewhere. Likely one of the rotten seventeen picked up recently sang about Quinton to get their sentence reduced. Run with fleas.

Wondered if he was part of group arrests ...jumped ahead to idea that a former buddy traded info for less time skipping over... article didn't include is date cardholder was murdered or date he was jailed for using card. For all we know card went through eight other hands before he got it ...maybe he used card to give bride shoes from a department store with sales people vs the self serve discount store his pic was taken at.

It appears phone records place Tellis with Chambers minutes before she was engulfed in flames.

Thanks all for the information, and the links Carm.

He used the bank card the day before the exchange student was reported missing (April 7, 2015) and again August 18-19, and has admitted to using it.

Hopefully more info will be released about Jessica's case.

I've always been suspicious of what Jessica "supposedly" said to the first responding firefighter the day she was killed -- that was said to be helpful to the investigation. :40

Authorities charge 27-year-old with capital murder in Jessica Chambers case
By Ron Maxey of The Commercial Appeal

Image

BATESVILLE, Miss. -- Quinton Verdell Tellis, a 27-year-old habitual criminal who sits in a Louisiana jail for crimes there, has been charged with capital murder for the 2014 burning death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers.

An army of local, state and federal investigators, led by District Attorney John Champion, announced the indictment charging Tellis on Wednesday at the Panola County Sheriff's Department. Champion said Louisiana will finish with its cases against Tellis before he returns to Mississippi, which "won't be anytime soon."

The indictment, returned during a specially empaneled grand jury that met Monday and Tuesday in Batesville, closes a 14-month investigation that involved checking more than 20,000 phone numbers and interviewing more than 150 people. Champion said he's confident Tellis, who grew up in Courtland and knew Chambers, acted alone. He doesn't expect additional arrests.

Specifically, the indictment charges Tellis with murdering Chambers while in the commission of another crime, third-degree arson. Because of previous charges against him, the indictment also charges him as a habitual offender.

Champion said the decision would be made "down the road" on whether to seek the death penalty, once Tellis is back in Mississippi and the family is consulted.

Could be months before Jessica Chambers suspect is back

Even though a prosecutor was finally able to tell the public Wednesday that a man accused of killing a Mississippi teenager by setting her afire more than a year ago has been charged with capital murder, he had to couch the news with a message.

The man accused of killing 19-year-old Jessica Chambers won't be back in Mississippi for months, if not longer.

"I don't anticipate him being here anytime soon," District Attorney John Champion said of 27-year-old Quinton Verdell Tellis of Courtland. Tellis was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday.

Tellis is currently in jail in north Louisiana and will have to be extradited to Mississippi. Tellis, who lived in Panola County until he moved to Louisiana in 2015, was found in possession of items belonging to a woman who had been stabbed to death in Louisiana.

Champion said because the state doesn't participate in an interstate extradition program, what's known as a "Governor's Warrant" will have to be prepared and executed and that could take four to six weeks.

Tellis is also facing a May trial date that could delay his return to Mississippi, Champion said. He is charged with capital murder in Mississippi, and was indicted as a habitual offender under Mississippi law because of two previous burglary convictions and a felony fleeing conviction.

Hi Molly, thanks for LA charge card phone info.
ETA... :give Thanks to Carm & Rump too.

They say possession is 9/10ths of the law so it looks like LA has him & jumps to head of line for answers in a court of law.

"Champion said Louisiana will finish with its cases against Tellis before he returns to Mississippi, which "won't be anytime soon."" (From 1st article above)

"Champion said he's confident Tellis, who grew up in Courtland and knew Chambers, acted alone. He doesn't expect additional arrests."

Still curious to know if Mississipi drug charges went away for info that lead them in right direction, not sure if he was somebody they wanted on that or not, obviously if he was in LA he wasn't one of the group they rounded up.

Once six months rolled around without any 'getting closer' 'promising leads' or any LE press releases crediting the victim for sending them in the right direction ... Skepticism at that point was only tempered with ..wasn't there & could be more important to LE to hold it close than credit victim before investigation concluded.

Now...with info that defendant was in LA last summer, acted alone, patting investigators on back without mentioning victim's heroic effort to point them to her killer??? not gonna rain on anybody for holding onto hope with wishful thinking but I'm doubtful any official first responder reports or trial testimony will back this up. Still not ruling out a 'dramatization based on case documents and first hand accounts' movie or tv show someday.

Suspect in Jessica Chambers' death may not return to Mississippi for months
By The Associated Press | NOLA.com | March 6, 2016

A Mississippi prosecutor says it could be late this year before the 27-year-old man accused of burning a 19-year-old woman to death is returned from Louisiana to face a capital murder charge.

Quinton Verdell is charged in the death of Jessica Chambers. Her burning body was found outside her car, which also had been set ablaze, on a road in Courtland on Dec. 6, 2014. Both she and Tellis are from Courtland, in Panola County.

District 17 District Attorney John Champion tells The Commercial Appeal that Tellis is scheduled for trial in Monroe, Louisiana in May. If he's convicted, says Champion, it could be another three months before sentencing, with time needed after that for Mississippi paperwork to go through the governor's office.

Chambers suspect extradition in works
By Robert Lee Long | DeSoto Times-Tribune | May 27, 2016

The man accused of killing a Courtland teenager by allegedly dousing her with a flammable substance and setting her ablaze languishes in a Louisiana jail, awaiting extradition back to Mississippi.

"It could be tomorrow or it could be the end of the year," District Attorney John Champion told the DeSoto Times-Tribune on Wednesday of plans to send Quinton Tellis, 27, back to Mississippi to stand trial for the death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers.

"We just don't know," Champion said. "It's in the hands of the Louisiana justice system."

Tellis was indicted by a Panola County grand jury in February in the Chambers death.

[...]A jury trial in Ouachita Parish, La., which began Thursday considered charges against Tellis in another case, one in which the Courtland man is charged with the possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

In that separate criminal matter, Tellis has also pled guilty to one count of unauthorized use of a debit or access card.

[...]In the Chambers case, Tellis has admitted to investigators that he was the last person to see her alive but he has not claimed responsibility for her death.

I wish they would post GPS location after they dropped this guy in the desert up here in the desert mountain region. We could spend three days hunting him in an unforgiving desert environment then string him up on the nearest Cedar Tree that was big enough to let him hang.

Suspect in Jessica Chambers case enters not guilty plea
Therese Apel, The Clarion-Ledger 11:50 a.m. CDT July 15, 2016

Image

Quinton Tellis, 27, entered a not guilty plea in the 2014 burning death of a Mississippi teen that gained national attention.

Tellis is charged with capital murder, accused of setting Jessica Chambers, 19, on fire on a rural road in Courtland. She was found with burns over 98 percent of her body, officials said.

On Friday, Tellis entered the Desoto County courtroom in his orange jumpsuit with his attorneys Darla Palmer and Alton Peterson. He nodded to his family, who were seated on the front row on the left side of the court, across from Chambers' family. When he entered, Jessica's stepmother Debbie Chambers put her arm around her father, Ben Chambers, but Chambers' family was otherwise stoic.

Trial date set in Jessica Chambers burning death case
By Therese Apel | The Clarion-Ledger | October 18, 2016

The man accused in the December 2014 burning death of Courtland teenager Jessica Chambers will stand trial June 19.
[...]
Tellis' attorney, Alton Peterson, said he's still waiting on parts of the discovery from the district attorney's office.

"We're waiting for some reports from the main investigators at this point, and we've been informed that they're forthcoming," Peterson said. "Before I comment on the case, I want to know what the investigation consisted of."

Panola County District Attorney John Champion said he's confident in his case. While he has been the main spokesman for the investigation in the past, he and Chambers' family have stopped talking extensively with the media, citing the upcoming trial.
[...]
Chambers was with Tellis the night she died, by his own admission, officials said. The two allegedly had a relationship in the weeks leading up to her death.
