By Associated Press | FOX59 | Updated July 28, 2017

HOMECROFT, Ind.-- A Southport police officer died Thursday after being shot while responding to a crash.

The incident occurred just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday near Maynard Drive and Madison Avenue in Homecroft, a Perry Township town located approximately 8 miles south of Indianapolis.

Police say the deceased officer, identified as Southport Lieutenant Aaron Allan, and a Homecroft officer responded to the scene after reports of an inverted vehicle. That's when police say "shots were fired by one of the vehicle’s occupants, striking the Southport lieutenant."

IMPD said the 38-year-old lieutenant was shot multiple times. EMS arrived and transported him to the Eskenazi Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He is survived by his wife and children.

During a press conference, Southport Police Chief Thomas Vaughn said Lt. Allan was a 6-year veteran with the department and he had nearly 20 years of law enforcement experience.

Police say the Homecroft officer and an off-duty Johnson County reserve deputy returned fire during the incident, striking one of the two occupants of the overturned car. The occupants were also transported to Eskenazi. One reportedly sustained injuries from an officer’s gunshot, while the other suffered injuries in the crash. Those injuries are believed to be non-life threatening, police say.

According to a police report, Jason Brown, 28, faces a preliminary charge of murder. The other occupant in the vehicle has not yet been identified.

Murder trial of ex-cop in St. Louis could draw national attention
By Joel Currier | St. Louis Post-Dispatch | July 31, 2017, 11:30AM

ST. LOUIS • The debate over police shootings of black men focuses on St. Louis this week as a former city police officer stands trial for the alleged premeditated murder of Anthony Lamar Smith nearly six years ago.

Jason Stockley, 36, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Dec. 20, 2011, shooting death of Smith following a police chase stemming from a suspected drug deal. Smith, who lived in the 4800 block of Page Boulevard, was 24 at the time and the father of a 1-year-old daughter.

The rarity of an ex-cop on trial for murder could draw national attention following recent acquittals elsewhere of white police officers charged with killing black men. Opening statements in Stockley’s two-week trial begin Tuesday in front of St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson, who will decide the case because Stockley waived his right to a jury trial.
[...]
Stockley and his partner, Officer Brian Bianchi, spotted Smith in a suspected drug transaction in a Church’s Chicken parking lot at Thekla Avenue and Riverview Boulevard about 12:30 p.m. Smith led the officers on a mile-long chase at speeds that reached at least 87 mph through city neighborhoods before ending with a crash.

Police dashboard recordings and two videos from the restaurant show the officers pulled behind Smith’s rented silver Buick. As they got out, Smith backed into the police SUV and sped from the lot past Stockley, nearly knocking an AK-47 rifle from his hands. The rifle was his own, which the department has said he was not authorized to carry on duty. Stockley fired several shots from his duty pistol before he and Bianchi chased Smith with two in-car cameras rolling.

Stockley reported shots being fired and shouted directions over the police radio. He also says something about shooting Smith, which court records reveal as “Going to kill this (expletive), don’t you know it.”

At West Florissant and Acme avenues, Stockley was recorded telling Bianchi to ram the back of Smith’s car, which Bianchi does, triggering the Buick’s airbags. Both officers got out; Stockley carried both his AK-47 and department handgun. Stockley fired several pistol shots into the car, then put his rifle back into the police SUV.

Sheriff's Press Conference 8/7/2017- Stolen Vehicle/Fatal Crash in Palm Harbor

Image

The teens stole two cars from a dealership and went for a "cat & mouse" ride early Sunday morning. Two in a Sebring and four in a 2015 Ford Explorer.

After running from the police and tailed by helicopter, the driver of the Ford turned off the head-lights and sped through an intersection on a red traffic light going 100mph. After hitting a car going through the intersection on a green light, the Ford went airborne, striking five cars on a lot and a large sign pole 10 feet up in the air.

Three died, the fourth teen in the car (14 y/o brother of the driver) went through the front windshield from the back seat and only suffered a concussion. None of the four were wearing seatbelts. The two in the Sebring fled the scene but are now in custody.

All six have been in a program where officials check on them once a day. It was ordered by the court they attend this program under strict supervision. The six have a total of 127 arrests among them.

They had all smoked marijuana one hour prior to the accident.

2 State Troopers shot in Pennsylvania, suspect killed
By FOX9.com | Updated: Aug 19 2017 08:29AM CDT

FAIRCHANCE, Pa. (AP) -- Authorities say two Pennsylvania state troopers have been shot and a suspect killed outside a small-town store, south of Pittsburgh.

State police say the troopers, both taken to hospitals after the Friday night shooting in Fairchance, were in stable condition. A state police spokeswoman didn't immediately return a call Saturday.

Police told news reporters Friday night that the encounter took place outside a Stop `n Save in Fairchance, a borough about 52 miles south of Pittsburgh. They say that as the officers approached the man, he pulled out a gun from a backpack and fired it. They confirmed the suspect was shot.

2 Jacksonville officers shot with high-powered rifle while responding to suicide call; suspect dead
By WFTV.com | Updated: Aug 19, 2017 - 9:49 AM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UPDATE: Saturday, 8:35 a.m.: The two wounded officers are recovering at UF Health. JSO says they are expected to survive.

UPDATE: Saturday, 7:30 a.m.: JSO has taken down the crime scene tape around the home. Crime scene techs have left the scene.

Two Jacksonville officers were shot with a high-powered rifle Friday night on the city's Westside while responding to an attempted suicide call.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said one officer is in critical condition and one officer is stable. The suspect was shot by police and later died at the hospital.

Police were dispatched to an attempted suicide call at 10:50 p.m. at a home in the 5100 block of Seaboard Avenue near Timuquana Road, JSO Director Mike Bruno said. Police were told that three people were hiding in the back room and the suspect had armed himself with with a high-powered rifle.

As the officers arrived, they could hear shots coming from the home. Four to five officers responded to the home and were attempting to make entry into the house as contact team, Bruno said. As the officers approached the house, the suspect began shooting through a door at the officers. The suspect then came through the door and advanced toward the officers, Bruno said.

The suspect and the officers exchanged gunfire. The suspect was hit with gunfire and stopped advancing toward the officers. One officer was shot in the hands and one officer was shot in the stomach, Bruno said.

Suspect in Kissimmee officer’s killing arrested, chief says
By WESH | Updated: 10:18 AM EDT Aug 19, 2017

EVERETT MILLER, Police Handout

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A Kissimmee police was shot and killed and another was gravely injured Friday night while checking on reports of suspicious people.

Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O'Dell said that Sgt. Sam Howard and officer Matthew Baxter were checking people in an area of Kissimmee known for drug activity when they were shot. They did not have an opportunity to return fire.

O'Dell said Baxter, a three-year veteran of the department, died later in a hospital and Howard, a 10-year-veteran, was gravely injured. O'Dell said there is not much chance that Howard will survive.

O’Dell said Everett Miller has been arrested and charged in the death of Baxter. He will be transferred to the Osceola County Jail Saturday in Baxter’s handcuffs, O’Dell said.

Miller was arrested around 11:30 p.m. at Roscoe's Bar on Orange Blossom Trail, in Kissimmee, police said. Police said no other arrests are expected.

Kissimmee police said it has been 25 years since an officer died in the line of duty. Sergeant Douglas Odell Parsons died on April 27, 1993 of a heart attack and Patrolman Thomas Alan Bartholomew was shot and killed July 18, 1983.
