South San Francisco Officer Hit in Head by Skateboard Identified as 12-Year Veteran, Father
By NBCBayArea.com | Updated November 25, 2016, 6:30PM

A South San Francisco police officer who was left in critical condition Thursday after being hit in the head by a suspect's skateboard was identified Friday, police said.

The violent attack started around 2:20 p.m. Thursday near the 300 block of Grand Avenue when officer Robby Chon, a 12-year veteran of the force, attempted to approach a suspect reportedly disturbing the peace at a local business, police said. The suspect, who was later identified as Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas, a 28-year-old resident of South Francisco, did not yield to the officer's commands, prompting Chon to call for backup.

When a second officer arrived, Ramos-Coreas took off from the scene on foot, according to police. During a subsequent chase, Ramos-Coreas immediately came to a screeching halt, pivoted and smacked Chon in the head with the skateboard.

Chon, who is married with two children, was transported to a local hospital with a "major head injury" and taken into the operating room, police said.

"The officer underwent emergency surgery for traumatic head injuries," police said in a press conference Friday. "He remains hospitalized in critical condition at this time."

South San Francisco: Doctors appointed to assess competency of man charged with attempted murder of cop
By Jason Green | Mercury News | December 22, 2016

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — A judge on Wednesday appointed two doctors to assess the competency of a 28-year-old man to stand trial for the recent attempted murder of a South San Francisco police officer.

The doctors are slated to submit their evaluations of Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas on Feb. 2, said San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. If they are split, a third doctor will be appointed as a tiebreaker.

If the doctors agree that the South San Francisco resident is not competent to stand trial, prosecutors can ask for a jury trial on the issue, Wagstaffe said. The same option exists for Ramos-Coreas’ attorney if he is found competent.

Ramos-Coreas is charged with five felony counts including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and resisting arrest causing great bodily injured. He is being held on $2 million bail.

South SF officer hit by skateboard released from hospital
By Kimberly Veklerov | SFGate.com | Saturday, December 24, 2016

The South San Francisco police officer whose skull was fractured on Thanksgiving when a suspect he was chasing knocked him unconscious with a skateboard has been released from the hospital just in time for Christmas, officials said.

For several days after the attack, Officer Robby Chon was in critical condition and put in a medically induced coma, but doctors upgraded his status to stable Dec. 1, according to the Police Department. He was discharged from the hospital Wednesday.

“Officer Chon was able to return to his home where he will continue with intense and continual rehabilitation,” South San Francisco police said in a statement. “Doctors and therapists continue to remain optimistic regarding his progress.”

Man Accused In Skateboard Attack On South SF Police Officer Deemed Fit For Trial
By CBS SFBay Area | February 2, 2017

REDWOOD CITY (CBS SF) — A man suspected of seriously injuring a South San Francisco police officer with a skateboard has been deemed by a judge to be fit to stand trial, San Mateo County prosecutors said Thursday.

Luis Ramos-Coreas waived his right to a jury trial on whether he’s competent to stand trial and the judge ruled he’s competent following a review of two doctors’ reports.

Both reports concluded Ramos-Coreas is competent, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Wagstaffe said criminal proceedings have been reinstated and a preliminary hearing has been set for 2 p.m. on March 16.

Ramos-Coreas remains in custody in the county jail on $2 million bail. He’s been charged with attempted murder, among other offenses, prosecutors said.

South San Francisco man to stand trial for attempted murder of police officer
By Jason Green | The Mercury News | Updated: April 27, 2017

REDWOOD CITY — A 29-year-old South San Francisco man accused of clubbing a veteran police officer in the head with a skateboard has been ordered to stand trial on attempted murder charges.

On Tuesday, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey R. Finigan also ruled enough evidence exists to try Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas on felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and resisting arrest causing great bodily injury.

In December, McHugh expressed doubt regarding Ramos-Coreas’ competency to stand trial. However, two court-appointed doctors found him competent, according to prosecutors.

Ramos-Coreas remains in custody in lieu of $2 million bail. He is scheduled to return to court May 11 for arraignment.

Trial date set for man who critically injured police officer
By The Daily Journal | May 12, 2017

A South San Francisco man who assaulted Robby Chon, a South San Francisco police officer, with a skateboard on Thanksgiving Day re-entered a plea of not guilty as an Oct. 16 jury trial date was set Thursday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Luis Ramos-Coreas, 29, requested a change to his defense attorney Thursday so that Jim Riley has taken over his case from Ryan McHugh.

Leslie Arroyo, spokeswoman for the city of South San Francisco, confirmed Chon is in good spirits and doing physical therapy. It is not yet known when he will return back to work, she said.

This trial was supposed to start on Monday.
I am guessing it's been canceled/delayed/continued because of the CA fires.

I'll contact a reporter next week. All his tweets this week are about the fires and devastation in the area.
