This precious kid lives in my little town :) This is a trend that has been going on for a few years, as a theme for birthday parties.

Hi Mal! :69

I think so too. It teaches the kids (who have too much in the first place) to care about the animals.

My niece says most people take a DollarTree item for the birthday child .. like those light-up sticks you make into necklaces/bracelets. A no brainer for girl or boy. :)

ST. LOUIS (News release) – A male black and white colobus monkey, also known as Guereza colobus, named Ziggy, was born at the Saint Louis Zoo’s Primate House on Jan. 10. Ziggy’s name is a nod to rock star David Bowie who passed away on the day the infant was born.

A tiny kitten was rescued during the hurricane in Raleigh, NC.
It was taken to a pet hospital and they took it to a Petco where
it was quickly adopted.

Cat Rescued From Pole

After nine days stranded on top of a power pole, help finally arrived to rescue a cat in Fresno, California. Electric crews shut off power for a few hours while they carefully retrieved the feline from the pole. The cat's owner said the fire department and other agencies had declined to help. The kitty endured wind and rain, as he sat atop the pole for days on end. The brave cat was lowered safely to the ground in a crate and was in good shape.

APNEWS December 12, 2016

The new giant panda cubs at the Atlanta zoo now have names.

Zoo Atlanta announced that the twin cubs' names are Ya Lun (yah-loon) and Xi Lun (shee-loon). The names were revealed at a naming celebration Monday, their 100th day of life, in accordance with Chinese tradition.

The zoo says Ya means elegant and Xi means happy. Lun is a reference to the cubs' mother, Lun Lun.

Canadians sent home for trying to sneak cat into New Zealand
Associate Press | December 22, 2016

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A Canadian woman who authorities say managed to hide her 4-year-old pet cat Bella in her handbag during a trans-Pacific flight had her vacation cut short when border agents discovered the ruse at a New Zealand airport.

The woman was refused entry into the country and she, her husband and the cat were forced to catch the next flight home, Ministry for Primary Industries spokesman Craig Hughes said Thursday. He called the woman's actions "reckless and dangerous."

New Zealand has strict regulations for importing pets. Cats and dogs from most approved countries must have an implanted microchip and be quarantined for a minimum of 10 days after arrival.

Hughes said the couple, both in their mid- to late-20s, managed to conceal the cat from the flight crew and other passengers during the 7,000-mile (11,300-kilometer) flight from Vancouver to Auckland.

"Apparently it was a very quiet cat. Very docile," Hughes said, adding that it may have been drugged to make it drowsy.

He said the traveling couple said they had nothing to declare upon arrival but border agents then determined their muddy boots needed inspecting. Agents then moved the couple's bags to an X-ray machine.

Hughes said the woman was "very reluctant" to have her small handbag X-rayed and insisted it had already been checked. She finally admitted there was a cat inside, Hughes said, but then said she'd told a ticketing agent about Bella when she purchased her ticket.

Meet Simon: The $22k two-legged cat
5:00 AM Sunday Mar 5, 2017

Meet Simon the ginger cat: He has lost two legs, used quite a few of his nine lives and racked up an eye-watering $22,000 in vet bills.

Super Simon - as he is now known - was adopted three years ago by Auckland couple Robert and Madeline McCarthy as a three-legged cat.

"When we first met him at the SPCA we didn't even realise he was missing his back left leg," Robert McCarthy said.

"He moved around just like any other cat, it didn't affect him at all."

All was going well for Simon but last June the McCarthy's received a phone call from their local vet.

Their much-loved feline had been attacked by a neighbour's dog, leaving an open wound and fractures to his front left leg.

The cat was rushed to Veterinary Specialist Group, an animal hospital in Mt Albert, and had complex surgery to save his leg.

The operation went well, but an infection post-surgery left vets with no option but to remove the limb.

Quote:
The lone Bald eagle flew low along the marsh grass sticking up through the newly fallen snow when it almost did a summersault — disappearing behind a ditch bank. Finally it reappeared, heavy laden with a dead jack rabbit held tightly in its claws as it flew close to the ground unable to gain altitude. Another adult eagle showed up following closely behind and the two disappeared behind a row of trees west of Market Lake.

Enjoyed the Super Simon story, Rumpole. I think I saw something about it but didn't click to read, thought it would be sad. He's a beautiful cat. :cat

Thanks for the eagle story, WKC. Sounds like there was a big turnout of people, being only the 2nd annul viewing. I liked seeing the photos... can't imagine living up there in the cold. ;)
