Meet Sable, the feline crosswalk guard

Most cats seem to go out of their way to block their owners from walking in straight lines. But one feline has taken a decidedly different path, becoming, in essence, a crosswalk guard at a middle school.

“He just kept going out there, and we would watch him from the window,” owner Tamara Morris told KAPP News. “He just hung out there and couldn’t wait to be around the kids.”

Fifteen-year-old Sable has been on his self-appointed crosswalk duty for only a year, but the kids and administrators at Enterprise Middle School in West Richland, Wash., say he has already become a dependable part of the team.

“It will walk out and come stand in, like, its position,” said student safety patrol member Courtney Budge.

Each morning, Monday through Friday, Sable walks outside shortly before the school bell rings. Once all the children have finished crossing the street to the school, he heads back indoors.

“He just knows when to be out there, knows when it’s time to go back in and then, in the afternoon, he knows when it’s time to be out and to go again,” said safety patrol adviser Monti Franckowiak.

“He’s out there just like the students are, whether it’s raining or snowing, or real hot and sunny, the cat’s out there, too.”

Such sweet souls they are.

How can some use them for experiments - and torture them so?

I fought against that for decades back in PA. When you give away a pet "To A Free Home" you must be very careful that you are NOT giving it to one of those "collectors/bunchers" who are in that business.

Such a friendly cat! Those students are lucky to have him watching over them. :8

Humans may not be able to herd cats, but apparently cats can herd humans! :84

And of course, the black cats are extremely intelligent so it's no surprise it's one of them who is the crossing guard! :8

Hi Sunstar :28

I guess some people find the reality of being owned by a cat is different from what they imagined? Or perhaps the people's circumstances changed.
At least they did the right thing by returning it to the shelter, rather than simply not looking after it.

Their loss is your gain. :8
