I asked this in another thread, but didn't make it clear. Anybody have any suggestions on how to introduce a new cat into a household that already has a cat that rules the roost? Current cat is a little over 2 and cat that needs a new home (at least temporarily) is about a year younger. Orphan cat would have to live with 2 dogs, otherwise. :84

It does all depend on the individuals. :cat :6

I guess PATIENCE is the only "rule"

There probably will be a bit of hissing and complaining.... but provided you can intercede and stop too much actual fighting... they will sort it out in time.

That cat MUST be rescued from the "two dog" hell :eek

Most things can be achieved "a bit at a time"... for instance... feed them separately... but gradually closer to each other. They may well nap far apart... but over time will be relaxed in same room.. perhaps then on same chair etc...

Having said all that... some cats DO like to maintain "personal space" My LBC will not tolerate other cats getting too close... but my three cats do live in some sort of harmony.

Sounds good Rump.
I have been wondering about that myself. There is much advice on the net about this, and your Vet too I think. I think you give the new one a room that is safe for him in the beginning. Much more ... maybe letting them smell each other under the door, etc.etc. It made me tired, so I took a break. There is no rush I guess for me, except to save a life!

A few years ago I rescued a loving cat that is blind in one eye. I already had one cat and five dogs. I put the rescue cat in a large cage and took him into a room and opened the cage door. He had food and water and a litter box. I kept him there for a day with frequent visits from me. The other pets could smell under the door. After two days I shut him in the cage and opened the door to the room allowing the other animals to see the rescue cat yet keep him safe. The dogs who are gentle acted unphased. My other cat hissed a little. After awhile the rescue cat ventured out and he and the other cat hissed around at each other for a couple of days. Now they are all the best of friends. The rescue cat loves on the dogs and they let him. He and the other cat share food bowls and sleeping areas now.

I once heard someone say they introduced strange cats to one another by putting vanilla on each cat. They said the cats then thought they were all part of the same "family" because they all smelled alike. I've never tried this, so I don't have any personal experience about it. So don't guarantee it either.

OOOOO I am relatively new with cats. What IF it's an out and out CAT FIGHT? What could you do ... in a house? One lose an eye? One have sharp claws, the other maybe none? What if one is bigger, stronger, older, much more aggressive? An AXE to grind, like the resident house cat? I don't know what I would do. :34
And too, we want peace in the house down the road. Can the initial introduction set the scene for their relationship ... forever? :95

Joni.......

In my experience cats will cease hostilities readily if you intervene... just shout or make a noise usually.
:2 :N16 :Q5
In fact at the pre fight stage... posturing and eye-balling each other... they can be distracted.

WHEW!! GOOD. I am SURE you know your stuff! :cat
What an interesting cat Lilly is. Comes when I call her - USUALLY. I think not 100 % of the time because she wants me to REMEMBER,
SHE IS - - A - - CAT! And, she stops doing something, IF I yell at her ... like getting entangled in the blinds!! Are they all like that?

Post subject:  Re: RT Members Pets

Yes... all cats come when you call.... if they feel like it :cool :6

One of mine NEVER comes when I call them all to have dinner... but that is because she likes me to go find her and carry her to dinner. I have been trained to do that :95

And they obey rules... like.. not getting on dinning table or kitchen benches... until you are not looking. :cat

Thanks, ShellBeach

I sort of agree in general.... but at times it's more like the cats think they are humans... perhaps of Royal Blood :)

:TF Whew! Thanks for letting me know because I was rubbing my eyes and saying (to myself), "What happened!" Even the title of the article changed from 'big cat' to 'stupid cat.' I'm almost offended! :TF
Not by you, rumple, of course. :rose

The person writing the article sounds like she is not a cat person?

I tried link to the "source" and found similar article (slightly different headline)....."An article from CBS Connecticut" but then I gave up and left it as is :cool

I was holding Lilly, she doesn't like it, but I do it anyhow. It's getting easier. I said to her "So you think I'm just another big cat eh?" She looked at the ceiling. Trying to tell me something? :Gslap
