Mike Pompeo holds crisis talks with Iraq's president and prime minister as mob storms American embassy in Baghdad in wake of airstrike on Hezbollah militia

  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo got on the phone with both Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi and President Barham Salih
  • Pompeo dialed the Iraqi leaders in the hours following the American embassy in Baghdad being stormed by an angry mob
  • Protesters attacked the embassy in response to U.S. airstrikes in Iraq and Syria that killed fighters associated with the Iran-backed Kataeb Hezbollah

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo talked to both Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi and President Barham Salih separately by phone Tuesday on the heels of the American embassy in Baghdad being stormed by an angry mob.

'The Secretary made clear the United States will protect and defend its people, who are there to support a sovereign and independent Iraq,' a readout from State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said.

Earlier Tuesday, several thousand protesters stormed the so-called Green Zone, burning U.S. flags, setting fire to the walls and throwing rocks.

100 U.S. Marines, 2 Apache helicopters reinforcing embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, after attack
By: Philip Athey

A detachment of 100 Marines are reinforcing the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, after Iraq protesters supportive of an Iran-backed Shiite militia attempted to storm the compound, U.S. Central Command said Tuesday.

All U.S. personnel are secure and there are no plans to evacuate the embassy, the State Department told Military Times in a Tuesday email.

The State Department added that the U.S. ambassador for Iraq, Matt Tueller, is returning to the embassy from previously scheduled personal travel.

The Marines were requested by the U.S. State Department and their deployment was approved by Iraqi Security Forces, Central Command spokesman Mike Lawhorn told Military Times in an email Tuesday. Two Apache attack helicopters are providing over watch.

The Marines are part of Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Forces Crisis Response — Central Command and came from Kuwait, according to a tweet from the Marine unit. The helicopters came from Taji, Iraq, Lawhorn said.

The siege of US Embassy, Baghdad - The Enemy capture a US Eagle...

Image

In Roman days..
A lost Eagle was considered an extremely grave occurrence, and the Roman military often went to great lengths to both protect a standard and to recover it if lost

Baghdad "Green Zone" and US Embassy Compound

Thousands of Kataeb Hezbollah supporters left funerals held for 25 fighters killed by US strikes on Sunday night. They then marched towards the US embassy, pouring through the heavily fortified 'Green Zone' before reaching the gates of the compound. As the mood deteriorated security personnel headed into the building and carnage ensued outside, with rioters eventually tearing through the main gate and inside the main forecourt of the embassy

I have to say that I am surprised and disappointed that a violent Mob can get even this close to the US Embassy in Baghdad, or any place in the "Green Zone".

I assume it is down to Iraqi troops/security.. which USA funds to tune of many millions. They just as well STOP funding and training these people. If they don't run away at the first sign of trouble... they are liable to change sides and fight for the enemy.

IF it is to US benefit to remain in Baghdad at all... then I guess this confirms that ultimately real security can only rely on real US armed forces.

Ambassador Matthew H. Tueller - US Embassy in Iraq

I assume Trump will do a better job than Obama and Hillary at keeping the Ambassador alive, through an attack by savages?

Violent savages managed to capture some Embassy signage.... burn a guard hut, and smash a window.

Hillary/Obama got an ambassador and 3 patriots killed.. and the entire embassy compound destroyed.

I don’t disagree with the theory that Trump is being pushed towards more conflict by “Neocon” factions…. I really don’t know enough to agree or disagree…

For instance…. Douglas Macgregor on Fox…..Trump is being “skillfully misinformed”

https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/19678796/posts/179735

But whether that is true or not… the situation now is as it is. Trump is responding appropriately to this Embassy assault.

However.. as I have said before, I do think it is misleading to label opposition to Trump as from just a “Deep State”…. that sounds like a few have infiltrated “The State” (at the top). I think it is far more pervasive.. it is the STATE ITSELF that is against Trump.. Hence the Trump DoJ and Sate Department are still protecting Hillary and all the Coup plotters.

I saw a post asking:
Who is “misinforming Trump?” .. The DOD, The DOJ, The State Dept, The CIA, The FBI, The Senate

My answer would be ALL OF THE ABOVE.. and some others.. including foreign Governments and their Intel agencies.

I have become a bit of a "Dove" when it comes to military action. It should be avoided.. but available as a deterrent and as a RESPONSE.
I do think "circumstances" are pushing USA (Trump) into military action... pushing him into deploying more troops, rather than decreasing the numbers and staying out of the never-ending Tribal wars in ME. I don't KNOW if "neocons" are orchestrating this (I tend to NOT believe Conspiracy Theories), but "at this stage what difference does it make?" :)
As things stand Trump is right to deploy more troops... NOW... to protect US personnel and property. It would be a tragedy if there was need of troops and they were not on hand. I am sure Trump is reluctant to get dragged into a full-on war with Iran... but... IMO Iran is a "target rich" environment... Trump could deal them a big blow without endangering US troops on the ground.

LIVE from Baghdad as protest outside US embassy resumes
Streamed live 8 hours ago
Ruptly

Ruptly is live from Baghdad on Wednesday, January 1, as a protest in front of the US embassy compound enters its second day.
According to reports, security forces at the US embassy fired tear gas early on Wednesday, attempting to disperse protesters that spent the night outside the embassy compound.
On Tuesday, protesters angry about US air strikes on Iranian-backed militia in Iraq and Syria managed to storm the building and set parts of the premises ablaze.

These “protesters” are all in “The Green Zone” which was formerly a VERY secure area… even while savage war factions roamed the streets of Baghdad just after US forces moved in. It is NOT beyond reason to expect the Green Zone to be secured again?

I think it might be a good move to remove all those Terrorist flags…. and remove the graffiti?
