Who knows?

My guess (FWIW) is that the Ozzies were on to something with the Flight recorder pings... so its in that huge area somewhere :)

Those pings were in no way from either of the flight data recorders. They were at the wrong frequency and heard way too far from the source. My guess is they were depth sounding transducers which some do operate at 33khz.

I'm beginning to think they'll find Amelia Earhart's plane before they find this one. Or maybe that island story is true.

MH370 missing for four hours before rescue response, report finds
May 02, 2014

A PRELIMINARY report into MH370’s disappearance reveals that there was a four-hour gap between the time officials realised that the jetliner was missing and when the rescue was officially activated.

As well as the report, officials released the audiotapes of the last transmissions from the missing plane’s cockpit, the cargo manifest and the seating plan.

The report noted that 1.38am on March 8, 17 minutes after the Boeing 777-200 disappeared from radar, the Vietnamese air traffic control questioned the whereabouts of the plane, which was to have entered their airspace.

They told their counterparts in Kuala Lumpur that verbal contact had not been made with MH370.

Other air traffic controls in the region also reported no contact.

A table was released showing what happened in the four hours after MH370 went missing showed Kuala Lumpur air traffic control querying other countries about knowledge of the plane and a request to another Malaysian Airlines plane in the region to make contact with MH370 on emergency frequencies.

MALAYSIA AIRLINES TELLS MH370 FAMILIES TO GO HOME

There was no answer.

Then, four hours after it disappeared, at 5.30am, the Kuala Lumpur Coordination Centre was activated.

The five-page report, compiled for the International Civil Aviation Organisation, is dated April 9 and contains little information that is not already publicly known. It largely deals with the plane’s early flight path and contains the audio of the cockpit and air traffic control communications shortly before it disappeared.

It is the first time the audio has been publicly released and it does not reveal any obvious panic in the voice of the pilot or copilot who speaks.

The report recommends that “real time tracking” of commercial aircraft be examined for the future in a bid to avoid an aircraft disappearing like this again.

Experts Think The Missing Malaysia Jet Recordings Were Edited
By Elizabeth Chuck

Audio recordings of the final conversations between pilots of the missing Malaysian jet and teams of air traffic controllers on the ground were "edited" before they were made public, voice experts say.

The tapes also appear to be recorded by at least two different audio sources, one of which may have been a digital recorder held up to a speaker, they said.

The analysts cautioned that their observations don't necessarily imply anything about the investigation into the missing flight.

The quality and brevity of the interactions between the cockpit and controllers made it impossible to glean any information about the pilots' state of mind before the plane disappeared, or even to determine whether both the pilot and co-pilot were speaking or if just one can be heard.

The audio recordings were published Thursday for the first time as part of a preliminary report by Malaysian authorities. In the report, Malaysia's Air Accident Investigation Bureau said a lack of real-time tracking devices caused "significant difficulty" in the hunt for MH 370, which disappeared March 8.

A group of 11 terrorists with links to Al Qaeda were yesterday being interrogated on whether they are behind the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

The suspects were arrested in the capital Kuala Lumpur and in the state of Kedah last week and are members of a violent new terror group said to be planning bomb attacks in Muslim countries.

The interrogations come after international investigators, including the FBI and MI6, asked for the militants, whose ages range from 22 to 55 and include students, odd-job workers, a young widow and business professionals, to be questioned intensively about Flight MH370.

Search for Flight MH370 heads to site of first 'ping'
By Morag MacKinnon of Reuters

HMAS STIRLING NAVAL BASE, Australia - An Australian naval vessel carrying an underwater drone involved in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 left port on Saturday on its second mission to scan part of the Indian Ocean where the longest sonar "ping" was heard over a month ago.

The Ocean Shield is heading to the area where a signal was first located and heard for some two hours on April 5, about 1,600 km (1,000 miles) northwest of Perth to launch the Bluefin-21 submersible.

More than two dozen countries have been involved in the hunt for the Boeing 777 that disappeared from radar shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing with 239 people, mostly Chinese, on board in one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries.

Inmarsat 'working' to make raw MH370 data public
By Saima Mohsin and Holly Yan, CNN
May 20, 2014 -- Updated 0258 GMT (1058 HKT)

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- The raw satellite data used to shape the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 could soon be made public, according to a senior Malaysian official.

Publication of the raw data could allow for independent analysis. Until now, the Malaysian government, which is in charge of the investigation, and Inmarsat have declined to release it.

But on Tuesday, Inmarsat -- the company whose satellites communicated with the missing plane in its last hours -- and Malaysian officials said they are working on making more information public.

"In line with our commitment towards greater transparency, all parties are working for the release of the data communication logs and the technical description of the analysis for public consumption," Inmarsat and the Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation said in a joint statement.

Earlier, the Malaysian government asked Inmarsat to release the data "for public consumption," Malaysia's Acting Minister of Transportation Hishammuddin Hussein said Monday.

"This is consistent with our stand for greater transparency and prioritizing the interests of the family members of those on board MH370," Hishammuddin said.

Maybe soon they will start looking in the same hemisphere that the plane is in.

So what have they been searching for? Scientists claim 'pings' were NOT from MH370 - as they label the operation a 'debacle'

  • Underwater scientists claim the search of MH370 has been a debacle
  • They believe signals picked up by a pinger locator were not from the black boxes
  • The scientists also say Prime Minister Tony Abbott's April announcement on locating black box was premature
  • The search of the Western Australia coast has been unsuccessful so far

Underwater scientists have called the search for MH370 a debacle and claim that Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott's announcement that black box pingers had been found was premature and lacked detailed analysis.

Acoustic experts, who do not wish to be identified, said four critical signals picked up by a U.S. pinger locator where almost definitely not from the MH370 black boxes, but likely from a different man-made source.

The experts believe the signals were detected too far apart to be from the black boxes and were also the wrong frequency, reported The Courier Mail.

'As soon as I saw the frequency and the distance between the pings I knew it couldn’t be the aircraft pinger,' one of the scientists said.

Deep sea drone Bluefin 21's failure to find anything in the search area supports the scientist's claims.

The unmanned submarine will be replaced by a commercial deep water search vehicle when it returns to Perth this weekend.

A mystery signal was also detected earlier in the search by an RAAF aircraft, proving there were other signals being transmitted.

This backs up claims by an expert who believes there were other man-made signals, which went undetected.

From the early analysis, it looks like Duncan Steel and the others doing the fact checking were right and Inmarsat got the calculations all wrong.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: Satellite data released after long wait
By Jethro Mullen and Saima Mohsin, CNN
May 27, 2014 -- Updated 1355 GMT (2155 HKT)

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- Data from communications between satellites and missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was released Tuesday, more than two months after relatives of passengers say they requested that it be made public.

But criticism quickly emerged suggesting that the information provided lacks important elements that would help outside experts put the official version of events to the test.

Malaysian authorities published a 47-page document containing hundreds of lines of communication logs between the jetliner and the British company Inmarsat's satellite system.

The information provided isn't the whole picture but is "intended to provide a readable summary of the data communication logs," the notes at the beginning of the document say.

Navy official: Pings not thought to be from Flight 370's black boxes
By Rene Marsh and Mike M. Ahlers, CNN
May 29, 2014 -- Updated 1134 GMT (1934 HKT)

(CNN) -- The four acoustic pings at the center of the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 for the past seven weeks are no longer believed to have come from the plane's black boxes, a U.S. Navy official told CNN.

The acknowledgment came Wednesday as searchers wrapped up the first phase of their effort, having scanned 329 square miles of southern Indian Ocean floor without finding any wreckage from the Boeing 777-200.

Authorities now almost universally believe the pings did not come from the onboard data or cockpit voice recorders but instead came from some other man-made source unrelated to the jetliner that disappeared on March 8, according to Michael Dean, the Navy's deputy director of ocean engineering.

If the pings had come from the recorders, searchers would have found them, he said.

Dean said "yes" when asked if other countries involved in the search had reached the same conclusions.

Underwater search for MH370 postponed for at least 2 months

"Our best theory at this point is that (the pings were) likely some sound produced by the ship ... or within the electronics of the Towed Pinger Locator," Dean said.

The pinger locator was used by searchers to listen for underwater signals.

"Always your fear any time you put electronic equipment in the water is that if any water gets in and grounds or shorts something out, that you could start producing sound," Dean explained.

He said it is not possible to absolutely exclude that the pings came from the black boxes, but there is no evidence now to suggest they did.

However, a U.S. Navy spokesman called Dean's statement to CNN "speculative and premature."

Yet I was called a conspiracy nut on all of the major new sites when I said that the pings did not come from the flight data recorders, even when I had good solid evidence of why they couldn't have come from them.

For some strange reason those people are now very silent.
