Brain-dead pregnant woman's husband names fetus
Jan 27, 7:29 PM EST
By NOMAAN MERCHANT
Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) -- The husband of a pregnant, brain-dead Texas woman who was taken off life support over the weekend named what would have been the couple's second child before his wife was removed from machines.

Erick Munoz said Monday that he named the 23-week-old fetus Nicole, which was his late wife's middle name. Munoz would not say why he chose to name the fetus.

Munoz said doctors at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth indicated to him that the fetus would likely have been a girl, though his attorneys previously said the fetus suffered from lower body deformation that made it impossible to determine a gender.

"They think it was a female," Munoz said in a brief telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Thank the stars this is finally over for that poor family. I think it was sweet of him to name the fetus after his wife's middle name. Even though it was a fetus to us...it is a gentle reminder of what all he lost when his wife died last November.

Husband of brain-dead Texas woman: 'I asked God to take me instead'
By Catherine E. Shoichet, CNN
January 30, 2014 -- Updated 1316 GMT (2116 HKT)

(CNN) -- Erick Muñoz tried to keep hope alive, but he knew his wife was dead.

"Many a night, I asked God to take me instead," he said in an exclusive interview with CNN's "AC360" on Wednesday. "But you can't turn off that knowledge, that you know how bad it was. ... And I promised her, I told her I will honor her wishes."

On Sunday, someone switched off the machines inside a Texas hospital that kept Marlise Muñoz's heart and lungs working.

Her family spoke to CNN on Wednesday in their first national television interview since they won their battle to disconnect the ventilator from the pregnant woman's body.

May the family be blessed with comfort and be able to grieve in private.

Munoz said his wife will be cremated and there are no plans for memorial or funeral services because the family is concerned that protesters would show up.

That is so wrong, on so many levels. This lady deserved to be laid to rest as anyone else does, and the family and their friends some sort of closure. How sad. I am not speaking ill of family, but of the protesters, and I too feel they would. Hopefully they were able to have a service, and just that the media and public doesn't know.
