Wellington shaken by severe earthquake
8:10 PM Friday Aug 16, 2013

Image

The severe earthquake which rocked the upper South Island and lower North Island this afternoon sent workers in Wellington running into the streets as the ground shook and buildings swayed from side to side.

GNS has confirmed the earthquake at 2.31pm was a magnitude 6.6 and was just 8km deep, 3km shallower than the magnitude 6.5 quake which hit the Cook Strait last month.

Today's quake was centred just off Seddon at the top of the South Island, causing significant damage to houses and infrastructure in the region.

In Wellington, hundreds of commuters were left stranded, with the rail network crippled and 11 commuter trains stuck between platforms for up to an hour.

The mass exodus from the city also caused traffic chaos in the suburbs as drivers tried to avoid the motorway and get home via back streets.

Strong quake rocks central New Zealand
Last updated 15:58 16/08/2013

City workers are fleeing Wellington after a severe earthquake rocked central New Zealand this afternoon.

Geonet said the quake stuck at 2.31pm and measured 6.2, 10km south east of Seddon at a depth of 8km. Initial reports said the quake was 6.9.

Aftershocks continued to rattle the centre of the country, including a 5.8 at 3.52pm.

There was no tsunami threat to New Zealand. Civil Defence said and civil defence headquarters had not been activated.

Workers were leaving their buildings and queues of traffic were forming out of the capital.

Wellington buildings have sustained minor damage including broken windows. Some people were trapped in lift shafts, Fire Service Region manager Brendan Nally said.

There were reports of damage to houses in Blenheim and landslides near Ward. However, he said the quake did not appear to have been "hugely damaging" despite its intensity. Roads leading to highways out of Wellington, including Jervois Quay and Boulcott St, were snarled with traffic delays.

NZ is not known as "The Shakey Isles" for nothing... we have a few.... Wellington is notorious for it and building codes have long reflected that.

LATEST: Marlborough bore the brunt of a rattling 6.6 quake that also caused havoc on Wellington roads and was felt throughout much of New Zealand today.

There were no reported deaths or major injuries suffered in the quake that hit at 2.31pm or the aftershocks that followed - seven of them greater than magnitude 5, including a 6.0 about three hours after the 6.6.

Thanks Mal

I hope it stays that way. There have been several large earthquakes I can remember... property damage is a blow of course... but it's death and jury that make it REALLY serious. The one in Christchurch was a biggie.. and sadly some months later an after shock claimed several lives. I do hope the one in Wellington does not go the same way.

Thanks for the update - very glad no one was injured in the most recent quake but yes, now concerned about an after shock.
