Tattooed ex-Marine who killed 12 people in country music bar massacre had PTSD: Gunman, 28, 'terrified' his mother and neighbors after returning from Afghanistan tour before he opened fire on student night

  • Ian Long, 28, opened fire at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks at 11.20pm on Wednesday night
  • He was dressed in all-black and used a legally owned .45 caliber handgun which had an extended magazine
  • Witnesses said he also let off smoke grenades inside to confuse the terrified crowds as they ran for their lives
  • In April, police and mental health specialists were called to Long's home after neighbors heard crashes coming from inside
  • They decided he was not qualified to be committed involuntarily and left him at home with his mother
  • Neighbors told DailyMail.com on Thursday that she lived 'in fear' he was going to harm himself
  • Long served in the Marines for five years between 2008 and 2013 during which time he was given 10 medals and toured Afghanistan
  • After leaving the Marines, he spent three years studying athletic training at California State University Northridge but he dropped out in 2016
  • A college roommate of his said he was 'mean', a 'loner' and would often dance in their garage alone
  • He killed himself on Wednesday in an office in the bar after killing 11 patrons and a sheriff's sergeant who responded

The gunman who massacred 12 people at a country music bar in southern California on Wednesday night has been identified as a highly decorated ex-Marine whose neighbors say he was plagued with PTSD and terrified his own mother.

Ian Long, 28, opened fire on the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks at 11.20pm on Wednesday night during its weekly College Country Night where students from nearby schools line dance and listen to music.

He used a Glock .45 which had an extended magazine to kill 11 people inside the bar including 22-year-old Cody Koffman after opening fire on the bouncer and throwing smoke grenades among the crowds to confuse them as they tried to flee.

Long then shot a sheriff's sergeant who was one of the first on the scene. The 54-year-old sergeant, Ron Helus, died in the hospital afterwards.

Before SWAT teams entered the building, Long took his own life in an office inside. He used a legally purchased .45 caliber handgun to carry out the attack and had modified its magazine so it could hold more rounds.

This guy is obviously insane. To link him to "Far Right" (or any political label) is a "fakenews" ploy, given that the media have associated such terms with regular Conservatives.......

A far-right 'terrorist' who shot nine people dead in an attack on two shisha bars in Germany before killing his mother and then himself was a far-right conspiracy theorist who was obsessed by aliens, mind control, Satanic sacrifice and government surveillance.

Tobias Rathjen detailed his extremist views in a 24-page manifesto posted to a now-deleted website in which he vowed to wipe out entire countries including Israel, most of the Middle East, some Asian nations, North Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Germans who he considered to be 'impure'.

The 43-year-old posted a rant calling for the 'complete extermination' of many 'races or cultures in our midst' shot and killed nine people of foreign background, most of them Turkish citizens.

'I can imagine halving the population,' he wrote, alongside claims that he never slept with a woman because was being watched by the government, and his belief in various anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

Alongside the manifesto, Rathjen posted his plan to help the German football team win a World Cup and a strategy that he insisted could have ended the Afghan and Iraq wars within 10 years.

His website included links to prominent conspiracy theorists including people who claim to have carried out autopsies on aliens or to be investigating missing persons cases which they link to alien abduction.

And in a video posted online just a few days before last night's attack in the town of Hanau, Rathjen rants about underground military bases in America where he claims Satan worship and child abuse takes place - urging people to rise up and storm the compounds.

Rathjen posted the manifesto and videos online before opening fire in his hometown around 10pm Wednesday, killing nine people and wounding six. He then went home, killed his 72-year-old mother and then killed himself.

American hostage Philip Walton rescued in dramatic military operation: Officials
Walton was abducted recently in Niger, where he had been living.

ByJames Gordon Meek,Aicha El Hammar Castano, andConor Finnegan

An American citizen abducted last week in Niger has been rescued during a high-risk U.S. military raid in neighboring Nigeria, officials told ABC News early Saturday.

The mission was undertaken by elite commandos as part of a major effort to free the U.S. citizen, Philip Walton, 27, before his abductors could get far after taking him captive in Niger on Oct. 26, counterterrorism officials told ABC News.

The operation involved the governments of the U.S., Niger and Nigeria working together to rescue Walton quickly, sources said. The CIA provided intelligence leading to Walton's whereabouts and Marine Special Operations elements in Africa helped locate him, a former U.S. official said.

Then the elite SEAL Team Six carried out a "precision" hostage rescue mission and killed all but one of the seven captors, according to officials with direct knowledge about the operation.

"They were all dead before they knew what happened," another counterterrorism source with knowledge told ABC News.
