Rio, city of love: Brazilian authorities hand out an Olympic record 450,000 condoms for athletes - or 42 EACH
2 August 2016

Image

Part of the reason for Rio's record-breaking allocation was because 100,000 female condoms will be available for the first time, along with 350,000 condoms for men. About 175,000 packets of lubricant are also being supplied.

The IOC says the condoms, which are known as 'Little shirts of venus' in Brazil, would encourage 10,500 athletes and staff to practice safe sex.

Expert to Rio athletes: 'Don't put your head under water'
August 1, 2016

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Just days ahead of the Olympic Games the waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as filthy as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria, according to a 16-month-long study commissioned by The Associated Press.

Not only are some 1,400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill in water competitions, but the AP's tests indicate that tourists also face potentially serious health risks on the golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.

I saw an item (on CNN :eek ) about the water off the beaches.. the very place that sailing competition takes place.. is contaminated with raw sewage (poo) as well as "Super-virus"... the virus that develops in hospitals and is a concern. The RAW SEWAGE that goes into the ocean INCLUDES HOSPITAL WASTE.

I think rather than the "Medal Tally" for each country... we should keep tack of each Nation's Hospital Admissions with infections.

LOL ;)
One official in Rio said he took a dip in the water and he's fine. Apparently, locals can build up a tolerance to the muck in their immune system. Another report I read -- someone said they'd been in Rio for eight hours and had not seen a mosquito yet.

So all is safe in Rio. :smoke

This is amazing to me. Mainly that someone visualizes all this and then the people who have the time to do it. There are seven 1-minute parts ( I know you want to see them all, Rumpole, :Gslap ) several showing the process in fast motion.

Why would anyone travel to Rio to go swim in sewage water? This makes no sense to me.

I know, WKC. :roll
Wish I had paid more attention to who is NOT going to Rio to compete because of the water and Zikas.
I've never followed the rowing or sailing teams before, so don't know if they are in danger.

Surely the public, visitors, tourists will be warned not to swim. In one of the videos I watched, they were talking about how beautiful and clean the water looks along the beach. It really does. :eek

Opening Ceremony Details: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/0/w ... time-does/

The Opening Ceremony Rehearsal took place on Sunday. This skit, described in the article, has been scratched.

Mail Online reports that supermodel Gisele Bundchen will be mugged by an actor before a police chase ensues around the stadium.

I read about it here: https://www.thestar.com/sports/olympics ... arsal.html

What actually happened, was that they tested out a scene in which a food vendor on the beach rushes up to take a selfie with Gisele. Security guards don’t like it and give chase, but Gisele intervenes to protect him.

“It was a gag that was not funny so we cut it,” he said. “There was nothing that looked like a robbery in the scene except two security guards chasing after a vendor. They are three professional clowns.”

The vendor was black, someone complained it was racist, so they took it out.

They spent one-twentieth of what the last Olympic Opening cost, but I'm thinking all the participants have worked just as hard to make it enjoyable.

For heaven's sake don't drop it! Olympic torch on the verge of completing its 22,000 mile journey to Rio as famous Brazilian surfer rides it into the shore

• Olympic flame has entered Rio ahead of the Games' opening ceremony
• Veteran athlete Rico de Souza was given job of carrying torch into the city
• He brought it across the bay at Macumba beach in Rio on a surf board
• The torch will light the flame inside the Olympic Stadium tomorrow night

I saw this earlier and thought it was a joke. :eek The link is worth clicking -- for the tweets shown. ;)

Officials said that algae was to blame for the green water in the diving pool at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday -- just as the adjacent water polo pool shifted its hue out of envy.

Rio spokesman Mario Andrada told The Associated Press that the pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center changed hues due to "a proliferation of algae" caused by heat and lack of wind at the outdoor venue.

Hi Carm :28

UGH! I saw that picture earlier in the week, it was the last day of competition. Unbelievable.

I just read they cancelled all diving events. Seems to me that they could have drained the pool and refilled by now. :doh As a pool owner, there are tons of chemicals (acid will do it) to treat algae -- AND it also takes days/weeks from the beginning of algae growth to get in this shape, so it didn't happen overnight. :eek When I read it was due to "lack of wind that caused the algae" I was like "huh?". Then why wasn't the relay pool also green?

What a shame for the athletes who work hard and train to compete.

(Our pool gets green early winter but has never "smells" thank goodness). Yes, GROSS!

So no major health problems so far? No major violence? OK but I find either hard to believe.

I haven't heard about any health problems, but I was out of town this week and not able to read much. In fact, I have seen very little of the Olympics so far. Will catch up over the weekend and next week. :)

There have been a few threatening and physical incidents happen, but not going to post about them. IDK if they are the norm for the area or because the games are being held there.

I would say there are likely a lot more than the first victim :smoke

Rio's filthy water claim their first victim
