My TV "Cable" company are doing yet another promotion to get me to pay for more channels... and it's working sort of.

I have "Rialto" Channel free for a few weeks.. and it's shown some OK Movies.

Just today watched "The King's Speech"
I heard all the hype and accolades, so being a contrary sod I figured I wouldn't like it.... but I like it. :91

I recommend it to anyone who hasn't already seen it

Hmmm...movies with great substance. Let me put on my thinking cap.

I can recommend some wonderful, subtitled foreign movies that I've seen recently:

The Secret in Their Eyes (Argentina)

Really good American movies of late:

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Tom Hanks)
The Help (Emma Stone, Viola Davis & Octavia Spencer)

I recently saw the movie "Girl with the Dragon tattoo"
Thought it was the recent thing with Daniel Craig... but it was the original Swedish with subtitles.

Don't normally like subtitles... but it was worth the effort.

Coming up this week is the next Movie in the Trilogy "The Girl Who Played with Fire"

There is a third movie "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest"

I highly recommend the first movie... I will report back on the other two.

:11 I knew I forgot one! The original Swedish version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is a great movie with an incredible performance by Noomi Rapace. I rented it and then saw the other 2 films in the trilogy in the movie theatre and then purchased the trilogy on DVD.

The American remake with Daniel Craig is good, but not as good as the original, IMHO.

I've heard that the books the movies are based on are excellent.

There's a very interesting movie on HBO this month, called "The Girl". It's about the relationship of Alfred Hitchcock, his wife Alma and Tippi Hedren, during the making of "The Birds" and "Marnie". Great performances by Sienna Miller as Tippi, Toby Jones as Hitchcock and Imelda Staunton as Alma.

"Gas Light" was a great one!! My husband saw it and is praticing it - - here. :10

Would it be fun to list some of the FUNNIEST films we have ever seen?

Right now I can think of ~
"The Producers"
"Lost At Sea" (Jack Lemmon and Walter M.)
"The Apartment"

ALL 3 are guaranteed to make you laugh! Some times we sure could use some laughs!!

How can we get them free on our computers?

The Last Emperor (1987)

I enjoyed it a lot... surprised to see it was made in 1987 and that I have missed seeing it up to now. I recommend it.

I was reminded of a Movie I did go and see.. way back when I was 13?

55 Days at Peking

My Mum took me to see it.. my first Movie in NZ (I think) and after going (by bus) into central city with Mum... there was no stopping me... I used to go (alone or with friends) during school holidays and see every movie that came out.

I remember the Movie as great... but it was 50? years ago. :31

It is available on YT I see... all two and half hours on a single YT.

Well... I got a few movies watched last night :24

"55 Days at Peking" was OK I remember now as a child/teen... you simply had to put up with a bit of mushy romance in between the BATTLE scenes :24

Raid on Entebe was good... mainly because the underlying true story gives HOPE

Israel and the IDF and Mossad are to be admired (and emulated) in the way they treat terrorist incidents....

It was also good to see more detail and the Israeli point of view. "Operation Thunderbolt" was done in cooperation of Israel officials.

The Robe....... I would not have sat through if not for Richard Burton... it was a bit like an expanded Sunday School story.

However... again as a child one put up with a lot in order to see a few action scenes and scenes of Romans etc were impressive back in those days. Film makers just could not help themselves weaving in bits of Bible stories :24
(Ben Hur was similar)

Indulge me for a moment, knowing my interests. 45 minutes of your life will be spent here. If you want to see why I love Anime, this movie is a great example..

The art is absolutely stunning. The soundtrack is phenomenal. Disney just cannot do this kind of animation anymore. I wish they would.

If you do watch it, try not to read too much into the ending, the two main characters do the right thing, and I found it very appropriate. Very realistic from the side of the teenager..this is really really good.

Most of our big kids are heavy into anime. They used to go to a convention every year when they were in HS and first years of college. Some of the story lines are very, very intense, gripping, and often a morality play. I don't have time to watch now, but I can recommend the genre, if not that particular link, yet. :)

My grandkids love Anime and what little I get into I have to say it is fascinating.

Love Richard Burton and some of those old movies you mentioned, Rumpole, and especially Raid on Entebbe. Although I forgot a lot of it and should see it again.

Oh dear, Joni, your husband is practicing Gaslight stuff. Hahaa. Hope he's not really. That was a good movie.

I went to the movies last night to see the 3D version of "Gravity" starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. It's about Astronauts who are working outside on the Hubble telescope and an exploded Russian satellite sends debris moving as fast as a bullet towards them and they get stranded in space.

The way it was filmed is groundbreaking. You were made to feel like you were in space right there with them. I'd be shocked if the director doesn't win the Academy Award. The people in the movie theatre burst into applause when it was over. I highly recommend seeing it!

If you are interested in seeing this movie, don't wait until it's on cable/dvd/netflix, etc. This is a movie that really should be seen in 3D in a movie theatre (especially on the biggest screen available, such as a Cinemark XD screen/IMAX digital (floor to ceiling/wall to wall) or better yet, a true IMAX screen. The IMAX in my area was sold out, but I'd really love to see it again, so I'm going to wait until tickets are available for the IMAX.

That is the one I would like to see. Absolutely adore both Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Angelina Jolie was "supposedly" in the running for that lead. That piece of wood could never give a performance like Bullock...Although they can still feel free to ship AJ off into space.

Did I tell you I don't like AJ? :Gslap

Also RUSH, a small film but exciting to me. I love Formula One from the old days...not so much now.

So what is up with the major Hollywood actors signing up to be biblical characters? Russell Crowe as Noah? Christian Bale as Moses? I hear even Brad Pitt is getting in on the Pontious Pilate film.
