Split Enz

Image

Early Split Enz were in and around Auckland University at time I was a student there. I first became aware of them on a (fairly crappy) TV talent show.. which they failed to win as I recall? Anyway.. the rest is history as they say.... they went on to be NZ's best known band with "some" international recognition.. only surpassed later by "Crowded House" formed by younger brother Neil Finn who had joined Tim Finn in Split Enz.

Happy 40th Anniversary to Split Enz

On the 10th of December, 1972, Split Ends (as they were spelled then) performed their first gig at Auckland’s Wynyard Tavern. There is no audio or visual record of this night but we do have the next best thing: television footage from a year later which hasn’t been seen at this length, nor the correct speed, since its broadcast in 1973.

New Faces, 1973 was a talent competition which guaranteed a large nationwide audience on New Zealand’s only television channel. For their TV debut, the band mimed to their EMI recording of “129” (aka “One Two Nine” and “Matinee Idyll”) for their heat, broadcast Sunday night, 18th November 1973.

Neil Finn: I remember so clearly watching New Faces in the living room 1973, black and white TV, Tim singing 129 with Phil strumming the mandolin. It was remarkable that one of our family was on TV but it sounded amazing, still does. One of the judges thought it was too clever. I thought “what an idiot.”

The final was broadcast the following week. Split Ends performed “Sweet Talking Spoon Song”. The Enz lost to Bulldogs All Star Goodtime Band.

The band:
Tim Finn — vocals and piano
Phil Judd — mandolin, vocals and spoons
Wally Wilkinson — guitar
Mike Chunn — bass

Quote:
Split Enz were a New Zealand rock band, formed in 1972 and featuring Phil Judd and Tim Finn and later Neil Finn. One of the most successful New Zealand musical acts of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the band would go on to achieve chart success in New Zealand, Australia and Canada – most notably with their 1980 single "I Got You" – and built a cult following elsewhere. Their musical style was eclectic, incorporating influences from art rock, vaudeville, swing, punk, rock, new wave, and pop. Split Enz established a reputation for a distinctive visual style, thanks partly to their colourful, offbeat costumes and hairstyles.

The group's career falls into two phases. They began as an acoustic folk band in the early 1970s and by the time they recorded their first album they had changed to electric instruments and took on a progressive rock sound. From 1977 onwards, with the departure of songwriter/guitarist Phil Judd and the arrival of Neil Finn, Split Enz' sound began to move from progressive rock towards new wave and pop. The early 1980s proved the group's most commercially successful period, with a string of popular albums. The videos for some of the songs from this period were among the first played on MTV. Since the band's break-up in 1984, the group has reunited several times, and its members have gone on to create varied musical groups with one another, including Neil Finn's band Crowded House, Schnell Fenster, Citizen Band and the Finn Brothers.

Crowded House

Image

From Wikepedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowded_House

Quote:
Crowded House are a rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985. The founding members were New Zealander Neil Finn (vocalist, guitarist, primary songwriter) and Australians Paul Hester (drums) and Nick Seymour (bass). Later band members included Neil Finn's brother, Tim Finn, and Americans Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod.

Originally active from 1985 to 1996, the band has had consistent commercial and critical success in Australia and New Zealand and international chart success in two phases, beginning with their self-titled debut album, which reached number twelve on the US Album Chart in 1987 and provided the Top Ten hits "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Something So Strong". Further international success came in the UK and Europe with their third and fourth albums, Woodface and Together Alone and the compilation album Recurring Dream, which included the hits "Fall at Your Feet", "Weather with You", "Distant Sun", "Locked Out", "Instinct" and "Not the Girl You Think You Are". Queen Elizabeth II bestowed an OBE on both Neil and Tim Finn, in June 1993, for their contribution to the music of New Zealand.

Founding drummer Hester left in May 1994 citing family reasons, but briefly returned for their "Farewell to the World" concerts in Melbourne and Sydney in 1996. Neil Finn had decided to end the band to concentrate on his solo career and the Finn Brothers project with Tim. On 26 March 2005 Hester died by suicide, aged 46.

In 2006 the group re-formed with new drummer Matt Sherrod and have since released two further albums, both of which reached number one on Australia's album chart.

Woodface Background

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodface

During a break from Crowded House following the Canadian leg of the tour in support of their second album, Temple of Low Men, band-leader Neil Finn began recording songs with his older brother and former Split Enz band mate Tim Finn. These songs were originally intended for a Finn Brothers album. Once these sessions were complete, Neil teamed back up with Nick Seymour and Paul Hester to write and record Crowded House's third album. Capitol Records rejected most of the new Crowded House songs, so Neil asked Tim if the band could use some of the new Finn Brothers songs. Tim agreed, on condition that he would join the band, although he has since indicated he meant this as a joke. Whatever the truth of that claim, the group that returned to the studio included Tim as a full band member.

The album was titled Woodface and was released in July 1991. It was co-produced by Mitchell Froom and Neil Finn, and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. Eight tracks were co-written by Neil and Tim Finn and mainly feature the brothers harmonising on lead vocals, although Neil takes the lead on "Four Seasons In One Day" and Tim sings "All I Ask", which later featured in AIDS awareness commercials in Australia. Five other tracks were solo compositions by Neil Finn and the remaining two were written by Paul Hester, including "I'm Still Here", a hidden track. Former Beach Boys drummer Ricky Fataar is credited on three of the Finn Brothers songs, "All I Ask", "There Goes God" and "Weather With You".

During the UK leg of the Woodface tour, Tim left the band. Multi-instrumentalist Mark Hart, who had played some keyboards on Woodface, was recruited to replace Tim for the remaining dates. The final date of this tour at The Town & Country Club in London was recorded and given a limited release in Australia, while individual tracks were used as B-sides for the album's singles in other countries.

The following songs were recorded by Crowded House for Woodface before Tim Finn became involved but were not included on the album. Seven appeared on the 1999 rarities collection Afterglow. "Fields Are Full of Your Kind" remains unreleased and "My Legs Are Gone" features on the fanclub only disc "I Like It Rare".

"Anyone Can Tell"
"Left Hand"
"Dr. Livingstone"
"Sacred Cow"
"I Love You Dawn"
"My Telly's Gone Bung"
"Time Immemorial"
"Fields Are Full of Your Kind"
"My Legs Are Gone"
