As they say... I don't know a lot... but I know what I like (Mainly Tenors) Giuseppe di Stefano is USUALLY my choice in Tenors when comparing versions of classic arias, and I was first "turned on to Opera" by Andrea Bocelli. I don't profess to know much about the finer points of Opera.... so I welcome posts on the subject. |

Giuseppe di Stefano - E Lucevan le Stelle Thanks to the You Tube Uploader "GermanOperaSinger" Uploaded by GermanOperaSinger on May 19, 2008 Giuseppe di Stefano (24 July 1921 - 3 March 2008) was an Italian operatic tenor whose career spanned from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. He was also known for his long association with Maria Callas, with whom he performed and recorded many times, and with whom he was briefly romantically involved. It is the opionion of many that di Stefano had perhaps the most beautiful natural voice of any tenor in recorded history. Of course he is also infamous for his regression in his technique; his consistent heavy pushing through the passaggio and beyond caused him to lose most of his vocal beauty by the late 60-early 70s. Here he sings the aria 'E lucevan le stelle' from Puccini's Tosca. This is a 1950s studio recording, his best studio version in my opinion. His best ever Tosca performance in my opinion was the live 1952 Mexico City one with Callas. The role of Mario Cavaradossi is usually meant for a lyrico-spinto/spinto voice, but if sung correctly, a lyric tenor can also produce an amazing effect. Di Stefano portrayed one of the best Marios of all time in my opinion, even though he was but a lyric tenor. |

I've never been to the opera, but my mother loved I Pagliacci and played it often. That and Pavrotti's concert in Central Park got me interested in Opera music and I enjoyed all the other Opera albums she had. |

Nessun Dorma is one of my favorites. I was listening to it again at work yesterday. (Strange...I was thinking that we should have a Classical and Opera thread...and forgot about it in the excitement of the WW game finale...and you added it that night! Eerie, huh?!) |

These are obviously not Tenors! Cecilia Bartoli and Renee Fleming sing the Sull'aria duet from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. This is the music played in this scene of "The Shawshank Redemption". |

Well...if you love Andrea, then you must love Con te Partiro! I also like his duet of "Time to Say Goodbye" with Sarah Brightman and also Sarah's solo version, but Andrea's solo version is my favorite!! |

One of my faves... Core 'ngrato - Giuseppe di Sefano UNGRATEFUL HEART Catari, Catari, why do you tell me only words of bitterness, why only things that torment me Catari? Don't forget that once I gave you my heart, Catari, don't forget! Catari, Catari, why do you say these things that make me suffer? You never think of my pain, you never think if it, you don't care. Ungrateful heart, you wrenched my life from me and now it's all over! |
