Leonard Cohen's Divergent & Devastating Version Of "So Long Marianne"

Quote:

Leonard Cohen has performed many versions of "So Long, Marianne." The 1993 Oslo concert rendition includes not only a radically different arrangement but also two verses not found on any album. The impact is dramatic. More information about this and other variations of "So Long, Marianne" at http://Cohencentric.com/?p=18108

The above Doco includes mention of, and comments by, Jenifer Warnes.

She sang backing vocal on many of Leonard's (early) songs, even after becoming a successful singer in her own right.
Her "Famous Blue raincoat" album, is a collection of songs all written by Leonard Cohen.. so cover versions in that sense. I bought the album, and like it well enough, but her versions often evoke quite a different feel from Cohen's version. (Warnes versions more "Poppy")

You have found some great videos, Rumpole.
I was reading about Adam and Cohen's daughter the other day.

This is 20 years in the past, but found the info interesting and I learned a few things I didn't know.

HALLELUJAH: 70 THINGS ABOUT LEONARD COHEN AT 70
http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/timdelisle.html

41 His album Death of a Ladies' Man was produced by Phil Spector, the reclusive genius of girl-group pop. "I was flipped out at the time," Cohen said later, "and he certainly was flipped out. For me, the expression was withdrawal and melancholy, and for him, megalomania and insanity and a devotion to armaments that was really intolerable. In the state that he found himself, which was post-Wagnerian, I would say Hitlerian, the atmosphere was one of guns - the music was a subsidiary enterprise ... At a certain point Phil approached me with a bottle of kosher red wine in one hand and a .45 in the other, put his arm around my shoulder and shoved the revolver into my neck and said, 'Leonard, I love you.' I said, 'I hope you do, Phil.'"

Fuck Phil Spector. Two years of hell, he almost ruined the man's career!

But 35 years later .... On 22 September 2014, one day after his 80th birthday, Cohen released his 13th studio album, "Popular Problems", again to positive reviews.

Happy ending. :)
